Wow... so it's 2013 now

And just like that - 2012 is done. Over. Gone. Onto newer things - like 2013.

Seriously though - it's amazing to me how fast we shot through last year, and that we're already through the first week of 2013. I had some time off to kick off 2013 and I enjoyed it thoroughly. If I had to say which gaming endeavor of mine took up the bulk of my time, it would be Guild Wars 2, but I dabbled in a LOT of stuff over the last couple of weeks.

So - Guild Wars 2... I was a huge fan of World of Warcraft - I owned 2 different accounts over the span of several years and maxed out a bunch of characters at level 60 before the first expansion and moved on to other things. Some friends got me to come back during Wrath of the Lich King and I again ramped up several characters to that new cap of 80. I enjoyed it thoroughly - even though I as an MMO player am a bit odd in that I seldom group. I probably did 95% of my leveling solo and spent gobs of time doing it.

Well, I have been playing Guild Wars 2 now for a couple of weeks, and have a couple of characters of lower levels as I explore. The first Guild Wars just never stuck for me. I won a couple of expansions and the game itself and played for awhile, but it just never stacked up to my WoW experience. Guild Wars 2 feels very 'WoW-like' with a world that feels more alive to me. Also not having to pay every month allows me to play as much as I want when I want, and not like I need to play non-stop for fear of not getting 'my money's worth' out of my subscription.

Beyond Guild Wars 2 however, I have spent a good deal of time on my MUD lately, Kingdoms of the Lost. We have been putting in some new code and preppring some area updates for a fairly major new 'event' in our game. Considering we first set up shop in August of 2000, it is still amazing to me that the staff and players there participate in so many ways and have so much passion about the world there we have created. For those who haven't read my posts on it and haven't had any experience with MUDs, just think of them as the first MMO's - text-based D&D if you will.

Another sizable chunk of the break went to things such as getting decks and cards around for Magic: The Gathering, playing Madden 13's online mode, listening to music from Skyrim, playing Halo: Anniversary and Retro City Rampage and playing with my new Blackberry tablet my wife got me for Christmas. All in all - I kept busy, but am back to work now and getting back into my daily routine (unfortunately).

I should have plenty of reviews and posts coming over the next few weeks. Aside from all of the above mentioned gaming activity, we also got some new games such as Black Ops 2 for my son for Christmas, and he has a couple more games coming for his birthday a week from today. PlayStation Plus has some nice goodies coming including freebie Mega Man titles - so I'm excited about that as well.

I want to thank all of you for stopping by to read and post your comments as well. While I took my week and a half off from posting, I still was getting a fairly high number of hits every day - in fact the last month has seen my all-time high average as my daily visits has hovered around 600-700. That is really encouraging stuff and I do see and appreciate it!

So, did you get any gaming goodies over the holidays? Any new games you've been diving into or plan to shortly? Or has it become time to catch up on some older, backlogged titles you've been meaning ot play but haven't yet? I'm definitely curious, so let me know and thanks for stopping by!

  1. I would say that I'm eager to get some new games, but I've already got a pretty sizable backlog. First up on my list is finishing Xenoblade Chronicles, and after that I can focus on stuff like Far Cry 3 and Valkyria Chronicles.

It doesn't help that my brother's got his eye on a lot of new titles, though -- chief among them, Anarchy Reigns. We've both been waiting for that one for a while; we played the Japanese demo that came out not too long ago, and walked away with good impressions. Between the crazy combat, addictive soundtrack, and that good-old Platinum Games goodness, I'd say we're in for a good time. If nothing else, it'd be nice to lend Sega some support.

In any case, it's good to hear that you're seeing some successes with your blog (successes I'm hoping to mirror soon enough, and slowly moving towards). Here's to a new year and even greater highs. Also, plenty of hot dogs.

...Fun fact: I really like hot dogs.

  2. I am working a few posts, slowly but surely. Bean 1 did get NSMBU for Christmas and another Wii U "re-gift" of sorts, and our Wii U games collection is quite large now. (Larger than I expected at this point.)

I got coffee related items, and money for the holidays, so the money is actually going toward some eShop purchases here soon, and maybe another retail title. Not sure just yet on the retail side.

I'm working on my "December Brewed" post now (working = type a paragraph, make sure the Beans aren't destroying anything). I have been playing Mutant Mudds, usually after being voluntold to do so by Bean 1, and I completed that one today 100%! It was a big deal for Bean 1 (and myself), and I'm looking forward to hearing more on Mutant Mudds Deluxe for the Wii U.

Also, congrats on keeping the MUD going for long, I have never done any, but I think I have friends that have.

As for scoring the Blackberry tablet, does it operate like most tablets? Lots of apps and services on it?

  3. Happy New Year Chalgyr! Sounds like you had a blast playing all those games (and the Blackberry) on your break. I still need to get Halo: Anniversary so I can experience the nostalgia too.

I actually got some pretty sweet gaming goodies for Christmas. I'm happy to say that I finally own a Wii (I know I'm late to the party haha). I also received Halo 4 and Super Mario 3D Land.

Congrats on getting so many blog views per day! I need to start posting frequently again so I can beef up my view count (although it was never as high as yours is).

  4. Hot dogs are in fact delicious. :P

Moving on though - all 3 of those title son your list are ones I am interested in but do not own yet. Too many others I have to dig through first while I attempt to avoid buying TOOOO many games early in 2013. Thanks for dropping by to comment and read, and here's hoping for even more growth for our little corner of the gaming community in 2013. :)

  5. I was just headed over to read the brewed post - so I'm sure I'll 'see you there' shortly. ;)

Good to hear that your Wii U collection is growing so quickly - it's always fun to get a new system, but even more fun to start racking up games for it.

Thanks on the MUD - I never expected Kingdoms of the Lost to be around *this* long but I keep joking that as long as players keep logging in, I'll keep paying the light bill.

Yup - it's like any other tablet. Ops, unusual os though - it's a Blackberry one and not android, but it does have an android player built into it and I can sideload apps into it. I've got a couple dozen games on it so far and have played with some cool homebrew apps too for it that have kept me busy. :)

    Thanks for the comment!

  6. Thanks and happy holidays to you too, Rob. Good deal on halo 4 - something I should have my hands on PRETTY soon actually. sounds like you did score some solid games though!

And thanks for the grats on the headcount. It's a process - it takes time. I know Super Phil was getting 40k+ per month, and I'm not there yet, but over the last year I have seen a fairly marked increase that has held steady - which is nice!

  7. I'm going to remember Blackberry now if ever tablet searching. Not a particular fan of certain companies in the tablet market, for numerous reasons.

Speaking of the Wii U (again), I'm actually posting this comment from it. Never realized Disqus has a character limit for posts, until posting this one from the Wii U's browser.

It MIGHT be because of using an alternative method than the standard browsers, but it seems like a legit limit for a service like Disqus. It's OVER 9,000!

  8. Yeah, the tablet itself is pretty well made. It's a 7" one, so not as big as my wife and daughter's ipads, but it's pretty snappy. Probably the biggest issue is since it's not natively running android, you don't get access to the Google play store. Blackberry uses its own store, which has a fair amount in there, but not nearly as much as Google Play.

Also, considering I recently reviewed a DBZ game? Love the reference there. :)
