Captivating "Against the Storm" Immerses Players in City - Building Allure

Polish Devs Claim "Best Design" Honor

At Indie Game Award 2024, the captivating city-builder Against the Storm claimed the coveted "Best Design" honor. This roguelite colony simulation, crafted by the Polish development team Eremite Games in collaboration with publisher Hooded Horse, seamlessly blends dark fantasy elements with addictive city-building gameplay. Since its release, the game has not only maintained an overwhelmingly positive reception on the STEAM but has also garnered playful remarks from numerous fans, who jokingly suggest enabling the in-game "playtime warning" feature is a must – a heartwarming reminder that hints at the developers' confidence: Against the Storm is a game that will undoubtedly keep gamers hooked once they start playing!"

Dream Chasers ! Mobile Game Devs Boldly Pursue Indie Ambitions with Against the Storm

During Taipei Game Show 2024, the publisher Hooded Horse made a special appearance to represent the developers in receiving the award. They also shared the fascinating backstory of the team, praising Eremite Games not only for their unwavering commitment to quality during development but also for their dedication to addressing gamer feedback and diligently improving pain points, even proactively investigating negative reviews. Hooded Horse commended them as an exemplary team offering exceptional "after-sales service."

Interestingly, Eremite Games was formed by a group of seasoned mobile game developers who maintained close connections while pursuing their respective careers in the industry. Despite their accomplishments, they harbored a smoldering aspiration to develop an engaging PC game. Determinedly turning their dream into action, in November 2019, team member Michał penned the first line of code for Against the Storm, officially marking Eremite Games' transition into full-time inde game developer. The initial planning phase alone spanned nearly three years, but their meticulous efforts paid off, successfully delivered a game that the developers themselves yearned to play.

Intricate Design Fuels Long-Term Against the Storm Allure

As developers who are also avid players themselves, the Eremite Games team understands that while city-building games are undoubtedly engaging initially, gamers often find themselves drifting away after the first 2-3 hours, mirroring a relationship exiting the honeymoon phase when challenges diminish and growth stagnates. Consequently, during development, they relentlessly pursued a diverse array of gameplay elements, seamlessly blending roguelike features into the experience. Their goal was to sustain an enthralling, honeymoon-esque allure that would captivate players’ long-term interest.

Despite the plethora of existing city-building titles on the market, Eremite Games sought inspiration from their personal encounters with Blizzard Entertainment games and classic hand-drawn Disney animations during their formative years. This inspired them to forge a distinctive dark fantasy art style, replete with vibrant colors, intricately sculpted species, and imaginative objects. To maintain a harmonious balance amidst the complexity, the team strived for the "perfect fusion of familiarity and novelty." Whenever designing a new species, members would first identify a core concept from various proposals and then expand upon the artistic vision, gradually shaping the foundational outlines encompassing culture, specialties, attire, and architecture. They meticulously ensured each element resonated with the overarching world, ultimately crafting the vast and visually captivating realm of Against the Storm.

"The team is truly elated by this experience!" Eremite Games emphasized that the competition featured numerous exceptional contenders, making their triumph with "Against the Storm" – a project that began as a modest side endeavor – all the more remarkable in the face of such fierce rivalry. To see their humble beginnings blossom into a mature, widely beloved masterpiece, even clinching the prestigious "Best Game Design" award, feels utterly surreal.

Looking ahead, the team reveals that during the game's early access period, they maintained a cadence of releasing new content updates every two weeks. However, following the 1.0 release, they plan to moderate the pace slightly, though assuring that Against the Storm will not be abandoned. On the contrary, Eremite Games is actively considering supplementing the continuous free updates with their first paid DLC offering. Tantalizingly, they hint, "This could potentially include brandnew playable species, so players should stay tuned!"

Destiny 2: The Final Shape Brings Prismatic Subclass, New Enemy Faction, and More

Two-month content update Destiny 2: Into the Light also launches today

Yesterday, during The Final Shape Developer Gameplay Preview, Bungie revealed the latest information on the development of The Final Shape and hinted at what's coming next for Destiny 2. On June 4, Guardians will finally enter The Pale Heart of the Traveler to chase after the Witness, wielding new powers to take on the ultimate enemy. The Developer Gameplay Preview also showed off the Prismatic Subclass—which combines the powers of the Light and Darkness—as well as the first-ever Exotic class items in Destiny 2 and the Dread, the Witness’s new enemy faction.

Alongside the three new Light Supers previously announced, Guardians will wield the Light and Darkness together for the first time to unleash the Prismatic subclass. This subclass introduces new options to enhance and customize each playstyle with the combination of multiple element types. Also, each class will get a unique grenade that combines multiple subclass elements: Warlocks will have Stasis/Void, Titans will have Strand/Arc, and Hunters will have Solar/Stasis.

Players will be able to equip an Exotic class item, meaning Hunter’s cloaks, Titan’s marks, and Warlock’s bonds will have Exotic-level perks for the first time. These perks will be randomized, taking two features from existing Exotic class items (even some belonging to other classes) to enhance the Guardian’s ability to customize their gameplay.

The Witness is in full force in The Final Shape, introducing the Dread faction, a fierce group of combatants with new abilities to shake up the fight. In addition to the Tormentor introduced in Lightfall and the previously revealed Subjugators, the Witness will unleash the new Grim, Husk, Attendant, and Weaver units:
  • Grim: A highly mobile flying enemy that slows and suppresses a Guardian’s abilities if they get too close.
  • Husk: An acrobatic melee bruiser that sends a deployable geist enemy toward you unless you hit their weak spot with a final blow.
  • Attendant and Weaver: By wielding Stasis and Strand, respectively, these units can instantly change the flow of the encounter and force Guardians to pay attention to their positioning on the battlefield.
Destiny 2: Into the Light is now available to all players at no additional cost. This new two-month content update issues in a rollout of exciting content, including the new wave-defense Onslaught activity; iconic fan-favorite weapons with standard and limited-edition variants; the new Hall of Champions social space; reprised The Whisper and Zero Hour Exotic missions; a new raid boss gauntlet called Pantheon; fresh rewards; and more.

Kashkool, the game’s developers, is a team comprised of the three Almansoori brothers – Omran, Haroon, and Edrees -- who grew up obsessed with playing games on the family computer. They eventually created their own games to challenge one another, then decided to start their own studio. But first, they had to learn everything they could about game development and running a studio, which was challenging in a region with no game curriculum or even a business license category for such endeavors.

Growing up, we never saw game characters or stories that authentically represented our country’s people and culture,” said Omran Almansoori, Kashkool’s co-founder and CEO. “The Middle East has amazing stories, deep history, and rich heritage that we want to share with the rest of the games industry and the world. We wish to build game experiences that bridge that gap and feel great responsibility to highlight the region’s talent and potential.”

Order Up! Nightdive Studios Announces PO'ed: Definitive Edition

No fools allowed! Yesterday, Nightdive Studios surprise announced PO'ed: Definitive Edition, an updated version of the classic 1995 adrenaline-pumping first-person space shooter coming soon to PC and consoles.

Inspired by generational powerhouses DOOM and QUAKE, the original PO'ed pushed first-person action games to new heights with its over-the-top, action-packed, fast-paced, explosive, ridiculous, bloody, smelly, scrumptious, adjective-filled, ultra-violent 3D gameplay. You play as a chef who crashes on an alien planet infested with extraterrestrial foes, using a menu of “household” weapons to deliver a dish best served cold (by dish, I mean revenge, just in case you were confused).

Nightdive Studios’ PO’ed: Definitive Edition spices up the classic 1995 shooter with updated visuals, antialiasing, increased framerate, redefined controls, and up to 4K 144 FPS performance.

Your ship has been overrun by aliens. Your comrades-in-arms have been annihilated, and your soufflé has been ruined! What do you do? Grab your jetpack and rocket launcher, and fry those suckers! PO'ed features 16 of the baddest, maddest, and most unattractive monsters in the galaxy. Rock-throwing ogres, plasma-shooting robots, giant bats ... and walking butts!

🍳BON APPÉTIT, *****! 💣

PO’ed: Definitive Edition Key Features:

  • A plate full of quality-of-life features to enhance the gameplay and fix bugs present in the original game (which can be toggled off)
  • Wet your whistle with widescreen support for the HUD and other on-screen graphics
  • A new delicious difficulty mode has been added for hardcore players
  • 15 appetizing achievements
  • A dash of localization support for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish
  • Total freedom! Cruise on foot or fly with your jetpack through 25 wild 3D environments

PO'ed: Definitive Edition release for Windows PC via Steam and GOG, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in the very near future. Chefs can wishlist the game on Steam today at
