Volontes - Nintendo Switch Review

Volontes by developer and publisher LocaGamesNintendo Switch review written by Natasha with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Long long ago, high in the clouds, there existed a kingdom where no one ever seemed to get sick. The sun always shined and people lived surrounded by magic. They had the freedom to create and explore the many facets that this kingdom had to offer, without fear.

However... there was one thing they could never do...

They could never save their progress---!!!!!!

*Wakes up in a cool sweat, clutching my Switch*

“Oh, thank heavens! It was all a dream.” I tell myself as I gently cradle my console. “I thought I was reliving my 3DS days. I'll never forgot the time where you couldn't save before a decision. So many handsome lives could've been saved with such a simple solution. So so many...”

~

From Farmer to Mage

Have you ever grown up feeling like you don't belong? For our Heroine, that's the feeling she lives with everyday in her small farming village. But it's not her only secret: she can see the dead, or silhouettes of those who once walked the earth. She has kept this secret even from her family, but her brothers and sisters adore her and the village people have shown her great kindness. Why scare anyone with something as silly as seeing the dead? Everything seems to be going great, until the knights of the kingdom run through your home, bringing the Shadowblight (a plague) with them. Killing everyone in the village, they continue to scream one thing “Find her!” Not wanting to get caught our heroine runs into the forest.

After nearly escaping death, our heroine finds herself being rescued by a mysterious man who came from a floating kingdom in the sky. Dazed and confused, she finds herself being healed by sorcerers who have started to claim her as the legendary Moon Witch. How does one wake up with magic running through their veins, without ever knowing...until now.

Now sporting her new life and status, it's up to her to prophesize the future of everyone around her. Will she be able to educate herself quickly or fall victim to a possible scheme?

A Magical Distillery of Men

A Mysterious Kingdom in the clouds must have some breathtaking bachelors in this newfound land. What's that? The Moon Witch is not allowed to love? Even with these tall glasses of MMmmmMmm? Superstitious traditions will not stop me! Bring on the LIs (Love Interests):

Oliver Paquet (VA: Kazuyuki Okitsu {Olympia Soiree, Piofiore, Jack Jeanne})

  • Fate Handler

  • Conniving Bastard

The mage who saved you from death. This long dark haired magician may seem like a hero, but he also seems to be hiding a lot of secrets. Perhaps he'll soften up with your daring personality? Besides, what could be more daring than spending time with someone you are forbidden to love?

Ismail (VA: Souma Yamato {First Otome Roll})

  • Doctor, Please! Kiss it Better?

  • Chick Magne

The practitioner to the royal family itself, this soft-spoken dark skinned dreamboat may just take you out for a lovely stroll around the kingdom. Since you are an outsider with the ability to see into the possible future, nothing screams “You can look, but don't touch” more than you. As a healer he has many patients, but it's not everyday he gets to study a Witch up close. You might be TOO tempting.

Emmanuel de Beaumont (VA: Yuichiro Umehara {Birushana, Jack Jeanne, Radiant Tale})

  • Alpha Vibes Galore

  • Loyal to a Fault

A noble man, with no magical properties, he makes up for his lack of magic by dedicating his time to domestic affairs within the kingdom. However he does not believe you are who people say you are. Trust is earned, not given and he wastes no time in making sure you know he's all business. A soft approach may not be the best tactic. Maybe he likes someone who can give him a challenge? Don't be afraid to stand your ground!

Melodie (VA: Tatsuhisa Suzuki {Uta no Prince, Diabolok Lovers, Lover Pretend})

  • Plays with your Heart Strings

  • a 'Sharp' Tongue... get it?

The palace bard, this minstrel also doubles as a knight. Hard to get along with he keeps everyone at a distance, yet his music alone draws you in. If he plays such beautiful pieces, maybe there is something beautiful inside? Considering you are the inspiration for the kingdoms current tale, you are the centre of most of his musical numbers. If that doesn't scream ROMANCE then what does?

Feels Like a Classic

Funny enough, the feeling I get when I play Volontes reminds me of my days playing Hakuoki and Even if Tempest. The deep story telling, the simple backgrounds and soundtrack, and very little notification on whether or not you're romancing your LI. This makes the game more challenging for those who don't like to feel like the game is holding your hands and saying “Go this way, it's much more rewarding!”

Speaking of similarities to other games, the soundtrack strangely reminded me of a Fire Emblem game. Not sure if it's just me, but I get strong medieval kingdom vibes. Volontes also puts the pressure on since one wrong move will give you a game over. Being a very squishy heroine means you get killed easily, so saving multiple times is highly recommended.

In a Kingdom Far Far Away in the Sky

To conclude, Volontes is an Otome game that sticks to old play styles and gives the player a rich and vibrant story about kingdoms, magic, witches and forbidden romance. Volontes makes sure to keep you on your toes in choosing the right decision or else you may be greeted by death's sweet embrace. Preferably I'd like a man, but to each their own. The headmistress of the college of magic would like to grade you on your performance. A solid 7.5 out of 10. Study harder and you may reach top scores one day. Maybe being a Witch isn't so bad after all.

Otome Daoshi: Fighting for Love - Nintendo Switch Review

Otome Daoshi: Fighting for Love by developer Idea Factory and publisher Aksys GamesNintendo Switch review written by Natasha with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

*Someone barges into the room*

“Nyx, we have a situation!”

*I turn wearily towards my boss as my hands stop clacking against the keys of my keyboard*

“Are they releasing another wave of angsty Otomes again? I don't think I can take another moment of Carol mumbling about ''bittersweet endings'' for another year. The memory alone has my migraine itching to return."

“Negative, it's actually a Rom-Com!”

That news alone had me jumping from my chair. It's been ages since I last wrote about a Romantic Comedy. My body buzzed with excitement.

“Don't worry boss, I'm on the case!” With a pep in my step, I hurried to grab my Switch, and I flew out the door in a hurry.

Duty Before Beauty

This paranormal adventure will have you play as Shunlin, a Daoshi-in-training, spitfire of a gal. For those who don't know, Daoshi are skilled fighters that practice the art of taming and passing-on of the spirits of the departed, who have been manipulated by the dark arts into reanimation. With her grandfather as her trainer, Shunlin dreams of being as good as him one day. However, during an annual fighting competition set up by the royal family, many Jiangshi (reanimated dead bodies) storm the event. It's up to her family and newfound, drop-dead gorgeous competitors to track down who is commanding the undead and killing off other fighters.

Only The Best Candidates

During your playthrough the story starts at the beginning of a festival. There are many vendors selling food and trinkets for the local people of the Kingdom, but that's not what everyone is in a buzz about. It's also the annual Fighting Festival and the game does a great job at introducing our competitors and future bachelors. Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce today's line-up:

Haoran {VA: Sakata Shougo}

  • Non Sibling Onii-Chan

  • Overly Protective

First up is our (not related) Big Brother. If you're looking for someone who's been training by your side, a full-fledged Daoshi, and a constant worry-wart you may just find yourself falling in love with your short blue haired and tall long-time friend. Sure, you may have seen him as a relative for some time, but maybe it's time to push past that and see him for what he truly is: a man.

Longli {VA: Shimazaki Nobonaga (Olympia Soiree)}

  • Otherworldly Beauty

  • Break His Points (It's Worth It)

Second is not really a fighter, but don't let his frail looks deceive you. Working as an advisor to the king, this golden-haired, beautiful official is organized and prepared to fight for his kingdom. Anyone deemed a threat will be cut down by his hands. Maybe it's necessary to get his hands dirty? He might be hiding more than just good looks under that uniform.

Yuhuang {Ura Kazuki (Cupid Parasite, Olympia Soiree)}

  • Genki Got It Bad

  • Childhood Friend

Third in our line-up is someone from the heroine's past. A boy, with brown hair and eyes, who SHE used to protect, moved away, and has now returned to prove his worth. No longer the crybaby he used to be, he's there to show off just how hard he's been training to finally get the girl he used to crush on realize just how strong he is. But first, maybe he should brush up on how to talk to her, instead of screaming.

Shaowu {VA: Matsuoka Yushitsugu (Charade Maniac, Olympia Soiree)

  • Food First, Talk Later

  • Big Heart, Dark Past

Our final contestant is this broad shouldered, violet eyed, short red haired, hunk of a man who screams, "stay away". Not much for small talk, he prefers to communicate with his fists and ask questions later. Strangely enough, he's very polite and is willing to slow his pace to make sure you two are on equal grounds. If you're looking to dig deeper into this one's past, it may not be all sunshine and rainbows.

????? {Kobayashi Chiaki (Cupid Parasite, Olympia Soiree)

  • Man of Mystery

  • Hidden Past

What's that? A secret entry? Not much is known about our mystery man, but maybe with a bit of sleuthing we might discover an even BIGGER secret.

Forever Compelling and Light

Otome Daoshi to me was a breath of fresh air. It's been some time since I played a fast pace and shortened visual novel. Most are usually very lengthy with heavy plot and dialogue, but Fighting for Love guides you through the main story line quickly AND even gives you the opportunity to choose your LI (Love Interest). It's attractive in a quick and easy way.

Other things that I loved during my playthrough was how the main character was pretty girly, in the sense that if she saw a hot character she'd straight out call him out on it. My girl knows what she wants.

And to round off intense or important moments, the game would flip over to manga panels to really flesh out the scenes, which brought a smile to my fujoshi heart.

Leaving is such Sweet Sorrow

Overall, Otome Daoshi: Fighting for Love was a real good time. If you're looking for a quick and quirky romantic fix, this is the game I recommend playing. Comedic banter for days and silly scenarios to keep those cravings at bay. Don't worry, there is still enough angst to keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm happy to give this game a fighting score of 8.5 out of 10.

~

*Dark clouds can be seen from a distance*

“Seems those dark romance storms can't stay away forever, better get back to the office and gear myself up for the next wave of plot heavy story telling” I say as I pack my Switch up, sip the rest of my tea, and get ready to brave the storm.

Mistonia's Hope: The Lost Delight - Nintendo Switch Review

Mystonia's Hope: The Lost Delight by developer Idea Factory and publisher Aksys GamesNintendo Switch review written by Natasha with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Ladies and Gentlemen

We welcome you tonight to the Fairy Queen's debutante ball. Dress to impress, you may just catch the eyes of one of our top bachelors. Not only do they carry the tittle of “Heir” to their family name, you might just snag yourself a demi-fae. Wealth, good-looks and magic? What more could you ask for?

Yours Truly, Miss Nyx

~~~
A Fairytale Come True
Mistonia's Hope: The Lost Delight is a fantasy based Otome visual novel that dives you into a world of Humans, Fairies and Revenge! This story follows our beautiful protagonist Rose, a young blue-eyed, brown haired maiden who has infiltrated one of the top 5 families of the Queen's Guard. As a maid, she has her work cut out for her; it's not easy to approach the Queen of Fairies. But why would one so young and vibrant be secretly hiding herself amongst the common staff? Why to kill the person responsible for killing her entire family and destroying her home town of course. The Queen may have ordered the attack, but someone inside the Queen's 5 loyal families gave the killing blow. Carefully she goes about her chores while gathering information secretly about the 5 heirs who frequent the manor. Will she sink her knife into her enemies or will love sweep her off her feet?
A Magical Gathering of Gentle-fae
Can't enjoy an Otome without a couple of heartthrobs and these men are many and magically inclined to make you swoon over them. Allow me to introduce our bachelors...
Alfred Creswell {VA: Umehara Yuuichirou} {Played in: Birushana, Radiant Tale, SympathyKiss}
  • Silent but Lovely
  • Cuddle Bug
  • Prioritize Your Safety
Alfred is the kind of gentleman that was born with a hard face; his every interaction comes off as intimidating. However, under that hard exterior is an even softer heart. He makes it his goal to help those in need, but must hide his status so people don't think he is doing everything as a charity case. But if you gain his trust, you may just gain his heart.
Ascot Lindel {VA: Fukuyama Jun} {Played in: Bustafellows, Dairoku, Birushana}
  • Can't Shake Bad Habits
  • Beautiful but Deadly
  • Hot Trash
Ascot is your typical play boy. Flirts with anything that wears a skirt and tends to seduce you with sweet saccharine words coated with poison. He's a one and done kind of guy. Playing hard to get seems to draw his attention towards you and if you can keep pace with his strong advance, maybe you can tame this wild stallion of affection.
Edward Bernstein {VA: Tamaru Atsushi} {Played In: Varriable Barracade, Dairoku}
  • Princely Type
  • Daddy Issues
  • Moment Maker
Edward is part of the main house you start in. He makes sure to take the time to know his staff and their likes and dislikes. He is a strong believer in equality, but still maintains a strong front in times of need. When his father isn't belittling him, you might discover a more playful side to him. Will you risk Papa Bernstein's stern dislike for a little more time with Prince Charming?
Linus Ward {VA: Umeda Shuuichirou} {Played In: 9R.I.P}
  • Queen's Guard Dog
  • Two Faced
  • Mister Handsy
Linus comes off as the smallest and cutest boy of the bunch, but that's all a front. His secret may get you in trouble and he tends to punish people without mercy. So if you're looking for a puppy dog personality, you may bite off more then you can chew. However, if you can convince him you're not the enemy his loyalty is yours forevermore.
Lucas Sullivan {VA: Suzuki Ryouta} {Played In: Jack Jeanne, Tengoku Struggle, 9R.I.P}
  • Best Boy
  • Shadow Daddy
  • His Precious Maid
Lucas tends to do very little when it comes to the Queen's Demands. He prefers to spend his time alone and research Purefea's. He lives with only one servant and likes to keep people out. Maybe if you could wiggle your way past his defenses you might find a broken, yet sweet individual that treats beautiful things with extra love and care. Hope you like moonlit strolls in a cemetery!
John {VA: Shirai Yuusuke} {Played In: Steam Prison, Bustafellows, 9R.I.P}
  • Childhood Friend
  • Forget-Me-Not
  • Puppet
Johnny boy is the only other survivor of your village and has been a big supporter of your revenge. As you gather internal information, he walks the streets of the kingdom and digs up external evidence. Together you two fight through your traumatic past, but why is it he can't seem to remember crucial points from your past?
One Cannot Just Say “Revenge”
Like most Otome Games the formula is usually the same. Start off with the common route to get the basis of the story started and be introduced to the main love interests. However, Mistonia goes a little bit deeper in the lore of its story by giving you a moment during the common route to explore the manor and possibly come across memory fragments. You see, Rose has a special ability that allows her to connect to peoples memories by either coming into contact with the recipient or finding these shards that are created and left behind during strong impactful moments that may have occurred during another time in a specific area. Only Rose can see these shards and once she collects enough of them she can piece back together a moment in time, giving her a glimpse of a private memory. A nifty trick for a spy indeed. These shards can only be obtained during the common route only.
Forever Young
To Conclude, Mistonia's Hope: The Lost Delight was in fact, a delight. It has a nice selection of men with traits from all aspects of interest. The story and world really immerses you into the shoes of the protagonist, and the art style is both to die for and admire by the talented Karin Suzushiro, who also worked on other otome games, such as Norn9 and Charade Maniac. I am pleased to bestow this wonderful title a solid 8.5 out of 10. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go spy at that handsome devil over yonder until he does something nefarious.
Score: 8.5 / 10
9 R.I.P. - Switch Review
9 R.I.P. by developer Otomate and publisher Idea FactoryNintendo Switch review written by Natasha with a copy provided by the publisher. Disclosure: I received a free copy of this product from https://www.keymailer.co. #9RIP #keymailer
Estimated reading time: 10 minutes
Hey! Have you ever heard the ghost story about the "Bansh-Otome Ghost"? They say she roams web forums for victims. If you stay up too late at night on the computer, scrolling through your favourite game reviews, you might catch a glimpse of her stalking you in the reflection of your screen. If that happens, I'm told you should NEVER stare her in the eyes, for if you do... She'll curse you, leaving you itching to read her future content...  forever! But that's just a silly ghost story! *Laugh* There's no such things as gho---
[You happen to catch your reflection on a nearby screen as you're PM-ing to your friend online and notice a person standing behind you: a woman peering menacingly. Your eyes lock and you can feel a cold hand on your shoulder. Gulping, you turn around to find no one, but as you hear your friend PM chime you turn back only to come face to face with that horrifying smile. Your blood turns ice cold. As a ghostly whisper of a voice says...]
"Let me show you another world. A world where your choices could find you a handful of lovers. An Otome experience that could change you *She licks her lips* forever!" She reaches past your head and pulls out...
A Switch!
~
Welcome to the Hidden Realm
9 R.I.P is a roller-coaster of an adventure that throws our lovely high school protagonist, Misa Isshiki, into a paranormal world of Ghosts, Wraiths, Spirits and Demons. Bad enough that our sweet heroine is conflicted about her life goals like choosing the right career path, but having an over-bearing mother, that has control over her every choice, she ends up getting entangled with the dead on the other side. She'll have to be quick on her feet and smart to survive the threat of those who wish to steal away the warmth of a living human being. Will she manage to resist the allure of the other side, or will she drown in the temptation of handsome individuals with tortured souls?
A Cast to Die For
I had to brace myself for the sheer size of available bachelors that 9 R.I.P had to offer. As the title implies, there are 9 gorgeous guys that come with their own troubled past. Depending on your choices, there are four available story-lines that will have two LIs (Love Interests) per story arc! Buckle up and remember to bring your love busting gear, because this game doesn't hold back with its dearly departed bachelors.
Kureha (VA: Masuda Toshiki) {My Hero Academia}
  • Reliable Cinnamon roll
  • Afraid of Ghost Stories (Even though he's a ghost)
  • Murderously Good Looking
Appearance: 5'9. Young-Adult. Black, short, spiky bang hair, with a highlight strip of red in the front. Red eyes. Wears a fancy white kimono and sports a katana.
    Known as one of the school's Seven Wonders, Kureha, or Kara Kara, is rumoured to wander the halls in search of other wandering individuals. If you hear a voice and a cold presence, don't turn around, for you might end up his next victim... Is what everyone is fooled to believe, but really, Kureha is nothing more than a sweet bundle of nerves who's sole purpose is to regain his lost memories. How did he die and why does everyone call him a murderer?
Hibiki (VA: Toki Shunichi) {Piofiore, Dairoku, Virche}
  • Suicidally Protective
  • Dangerously Cuddly
  • Dandere Boy
Appearance: 5'4. Highschooler. Short black hair, parted in the middle. Grey eyes. Wears a school uniform dating back to 1940's with a noose around his neck.
    Another one of the school's Seven Wonders, Hibiki is known as 'Grasp in the Mirror', a boy who lives within the second floor stairwell landing mirror and is desperate for the warmth of others. If you linger too closely to his mirror you might be dragged in and trapped FOREVER! OR perhaps you can save him by offering the one thing he truly needs: Good companionship! Hopefully you can balance his extreme loneliness with your love!
Sena (VA: Kakihara Tetsuya) {Amnesia, Code: Realize, Bustafellows}
  • 50 First Dates
  • Pretty Boy Popstar (Who doesn't sing)
  • Love at First Sight
Appearance: 5'5. Young-Adult. Short blond hair parted to the side. Amber eyes. Wears a white long-sleeved shirt, jacket, ankle high boots, jeans, sporting necklaces and multiple ear piercings.
Sena is the town's local rumoured ghost who appears at the beach-side park. Titled “The Boy who Gazes at the Stars” our young idol has no idea that he is dead. He thinks he's being sneaky by visiting his childhood hometown and avoiding his rabid fans by being 'Incognito'. A member of the hit J-Pop group S-Crown, our poor boy has a bad case of memory reset, trapping him in a groundhog day scenario, except his brain rewinds to the day he arrived in town, forgetting anybody or any place he visited before. Can you help our lost starry eyed celebrity come to terms with his reality?
Koyo (VA: Suzuki Ryota) {Jack Jeanne, Tengoku Struggle}
  • Modern Day Youtuber
  • A Masked Sweetheart
  • Killer Followers
Appearance: 5'6. Young-Adult. Light brown, bowl cut hairstyle with green undertones. Amber eyes. Wears baggy pants, bracelets and ear piercing, black t-shirt with a vest and sports a bandana.
Ever hear of the folklore about “Merry Mary”? A local legend about a ghost who calls upon you from the beyond through your cell phone, leaving you connected to your loved ones who have departed to the afterlife. Koyo keeps himself busy by trying to dissuade those who may have suicidal thoughts. He never imagined he'd have such an important job to fulfill when he crossed over. Before, when he was alive, he would connect to the world through online streaming. Going by 'Yozora', he played through horror games to keep people connected. But, one day, one of his fans got a little too obsessed with him. What better way to make him all yours then to end ones life?
Minami (VA: Okamoto Nobuhiko) {Radiant Tale, Cupid Parasite, Variable Barricade}
  • Devilishly Split Personality
  • Dream Eater
  • Sweet Tooth
Appearance: 5'2. Young-Man. Demon. Asymmetrical blunt bangs, black and short. Red eyes. Black nails. Wears loose fitted button-up white shirt, white suspenders. Ripped black legging and ankle high heels. Multiple necklaces, bracelets, chokers, flowers. Sporting horn like accessories.
Minami has no fancy lore to him as he lives within Hell itself. He's been on the search for a pure soul and just so happens to be drawn to yours. But this demon isn't any lesser being. Don't let his small stature deceive you as this Incubus craves a soul pact and can only tempt you through your dreams. Will you be able to keep your heart strong? Or will it waver under his teasing gaze and never ending sinful playfulness?
Seiya (VA: Tachibana Shinnosuke) {Piofiore, Atelier Series, Blue Lock}
  • Hopeless Romantic
  • Exorcise my Heart
  • Purify by Touch
Appearance: 6'2. Young-Adult. Asymmetrical blunt bangs, white and short. Blue eyes. Wears holy robes, boots, gloves, capelet and decorative pendants.
If there are Demons in Hell, then Reapers are also present. Here comes my man Seiya, who is the warden over those who have committed the most heinous of crimes in life and are due to serve their sentence in Hell. He is dutiful and serious, but can't seem to rein in his own emotions when he has such lovely company distracting him. Having never really had the time to socialize, he's a guy who easily takes a situation and turns it into the most uncomfortable of misunderstandings. Stare at him too long and he'll believe you've fallen madly in love with him. Once you've piqued his interest he'll never let you go.
Yukimaro (VA: KENN) {Cupid Parasite, Bustafellow, Sympathy Kiss}
  • Spirit Puppy
  • Endless Hunger
  • Resident Ikemen
Appearance: 5'8. Young-Adult. Ankle length Blond hair with a orange braided ribbon. Amber eyes. Wears a fancy orange and white kimono, sporting a decorative choker.
Pray long enough at a shrine and you may end up with your own Spirit Guardian. Yukimaro is a godling in training and has picked you to help him ascend into godhood. If he can guide you to walk down the right career path, he'll succeed in his mission. Careful, as this youthful spirit is chock full of energy that may be either comforting or annoying. Perhaps while you sit back and listen to his positive attitude you might be able to make him see humans as more then just 'A Test”!
Koharu (VA: Akazami Ryohei) {Radiant Tale}
  • Cooking Mama “Urgh” Daddy?
  • Haunting Presence
  • Wax on, Wax off
Appearance: 5'9. Young-Adult. Long brown hair tied up in a ponytail, spiky bangs. Amber eyes. Right eye scarred. Wears a purple ritual style kimono, belts and hanging pendant necklace.
Ever been haunted before? Well, if you don't perform a proper ritual on a Ouija Board you'll have this heartthrob chasing after you. Goodbye? More like HELLO! Koharu will stick to you like glue so you'll learn a long hard lesson about never messing up sacred rituals again. Think no one can see him? WRONG! He can choose to live in the spirit world or mortal realm. When he's not pestering you he'll take the time to cook and teach you long forgotten spells that may just land the both of you in hot water.
??? (VA: Amasaki Kouhei) {Cupid Parasite, Piofiore}
  • Protector of Souls
  • Wearer of Pink
  • Not a Little Boy
Let's just say, you'll have to work hard and be patient to unlock this Lover!
Otherworldly Music
One of the many things that stood out to me in 9 R.I.P was how catchy the score was. Each character has their own theme song that really brings out each character's personality. You'll also have your basic environment and/or mood music pieces that will set the tone for the rest of the game. I admit that there were moments where I took the time to jam out to certain character's sound tracks. If I could give some examples I'd say that Sena's, Koyo's, Minami's and Seiya's have the beats that I live for.
Hauntingly Breathtaking
Artistically, the game is a visual enjoyment. The colours do a great job at setting the tone for the entire game and character designs are also no joke. Designer Yuuya graciously gave us another taste of their talent, like they did back in Cafe Enchante, so the recognition was welcoming. Even the text box and menu design were noticeably creative. The other thing that stood out to me was that each character had a floral pattern to represent where they were killed, making something like blood a little more interesting than just a normal splotch. Very unique indeed.
One way Ticket to the Netherworld
Overall, the gameplay and story were quite interesting. The entire game focuses on having to make hard life changing decisions and a huge spotlight on death and some may not feel comfortable with this kind of approach to dark romance. I wouldn't recommend this to those who have a hard time on this theme, considering most endings just end up making you feel bittersweet. Emphasis on the BITTER and SWEET!
Til Death do Us Part
To conclude, 9 R.I.P was a trip that took me down some dark narrow hallways. More risks than rewards, but I've always been one to like a story that isn't always finishing on a happy note. With the multitude of available bachelors to choose from, you should be able to connect with one of our dearly departed souls. I give this game my rating of 8 out of 10 for making me just... FEEL!
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes
*Drum Roll* Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome back to our spectacular show! *Symbol Clash*
As we gather here today, I see recurring faces. Couldn't stay away from our last performance? Just itching to join our wonderful family, again, for another crazy circus experience? You're in luck! I made sure to add more razzle and dazzle than our last showcase. Clinging to the edge of your seats, are we? Then it's about time to start the show...
Everyone, we invite you to relax, grab some popcorn, and cheer loudly for our fanfare, extraordinaire!
~~~

Behind the Curtains

Spoiler warning, in Radiant Tale: Fanfare we focus on the after story from the original title: Radiant Tale. We experience the after story through our beloved heroine, Tifalia. Depending on who you've enchanted in your original playthrough, this version continues to centre on the couple's relationship goals. How are they fairing after confessing their undying love for one another?

This fan disc will tug you along a 4-hour short story (can you call several hours short???) about the ups and downs, struggles and sacrifices these power couples push through. No need to worry about unlocking anyone's route though, as all is available from the get go.

Performing on Stage Tonight

ROLL CALL!? Here's a quick refresher on our past love interests:

Zafora (VA: Junya Enoki) {Cupid Parasite, OZMAFIA!!}

  • Residential Tsun

  • Secret Kiss Stealer

  • Action over Words

What's our circus clown been up to these days? Trying his best to govern his hometown with his sweet adorable girlfriend by his side. But does someone that busy really have time to show his affection enough? Could loneliness be our partner in crime? Or are we going to put our foot down and flaunt ourselves in front of 'Mister' responsible to get that jester blood and heart pumping again?

Vilio (VA: Yuuma Uchida) {Jack Jeanne, Olympia Soiree}

  • Magical Buddies

  • A Hunger like no Other

  • Mates for Life

What can I say... You're married (mated) to a flipping DRAGON! Infinite air-miles, warm cuddles and a powerful guardian. What could go wrong? Magic apparently. As this fiery duo travels the world, they must face new hardships in the shape of natural elements. Even the sweetest kiss can call forth vines from the earth to bound our scaly husband to the ground. Curses! Why must these feelings conjure up natural disasters. Will they conquer these strong, magical, emotions?

Paschalia (VA: Yuichiro Umehara) {Jack Jeanne, Cafe Enchante, Sympathy Kiss}

  • Sick of Waiting

  • Happy Waifu, Happy Laifu?

  • When Two Become One

Having survived a deadly illness, our aquatic magician can now focus all his time and energy on pampering his cute new wife. Having challenged the goddess of life, these two newlyweds are the symbol of True Love. With such an honour bestowed upon them, they strive to educate the rest of the world in the art of the heart. With so much focus on the rest of society, will they have time to embrace each other?

Ion (VA: Youhei Azakami) {Seven Deadly Sins, Atelier Ryza, 9 R. I. P.}

  • Gladiator Daddy

  • Bread Maker

  • Good Morning and Good Night

Touch deprived most of his life, our acrobat wastes no time in making sure to kiss his sweetheart before and after a hard day at work. As dedicated as he is in making sure you're loved on a daily basis, certain things from his past need mending before he can live the comfortable life of a house husband. A change in environment will definitely put their relationship to the test. Will they fight to come out on top?

Radie (VA: Nobuhiko Okamoto) {Variable Barricade, Charade Maniacs, Cupid Parasite}

  • Chonk 2: The Furry Fury

  • Perma-Smolder

  • Ooey-Gooey Jealousy

A dream he never thought would come true, our mascot can now hold his precious gift (You) close. Every night is girlfriend appreciation night, but there are those who wish to get in his way. Parents, friends, and that wolfish barkeep. When tension between the two rises, there's only one solution to relieving this stress... A very cute and embarrassing grooming session... I'll let you wonder about that one.

New Recruits

Let's be real for a second... During the first game (or any Otome you've played) I bet you asked yourself: “Why can't these cuties be date-able?” You're in for a sweet and salty treat then. Back by popular demand, we are now able to romance a couple of new available bachelors! Shall I make introductions?

Jinnia (VA: Kondou Takashi) {Birushana, Ephemeral, Diabolik Lover}

  • Dripping with Good Looks

  • Make-Up Queen

  • OH NO! HE'S HAWT!

The Ring Leader himself! Whoa! This one caught me by surprise considering his love for all things cute and that he has a high respect for the arts of femininity. His looks alone scream beauty queen, but that's where I was terribly wrong. There is very much a MAN under that luscious exterior, and he's raring to tease the crap out of you. I don't think I've blushed so much from the unexpected side of his flirtatious onslaught. Is it hot in here or is it just me?

Liyan ( Watanabe Hiroshi) {Fire Emblem: Three Houses}

  • Down Boy

  • Reap What you Sow

  • Belly Rubs

Our flirtatious bar owner from Cheers is back and is ready to amp up his game. Don't let his wolfish charm trick you. This puppy is all woof and no love bites. Reciprocate his romantic attempt and he becomes a ball of goo. Wait? Who's romancing who? If what this hotshot Fenrir needs is a taste of his own medicine to turn him into a blushing mess, this may turn out to be more fun then I initially thought?

What if...?

There are two other potential lovers, but with a shorter story of what could possibly bloom between the two of you. A sort of sneak peak into a possible future. Wanna see?

Alest (VA: Yoshimura Kazuhiro) {CollarxMalice, Bustafellow}

  • A Bull That Charges Head First

  • Megane-Mania

  • Fireworks in my Stomach

Who would have thought that the royal family advisor had such a handsome personality. If you can get over his combustion and spontaneous outbursts, he can be quite endearing. He might just have to steal you away to be his personal secretary.

Prince Colivus (VA: Koichi Makoto (Young), Shigematsu Chiharu (Adult)) {Demon Slayer, Ensemble Stars!}

  • Cursed Prince-ling

  • Adult Heart

  • Junior Magician

The kingdom's future king is struggling to come to terms with his miniature stature. He wishes for nothing more than to be a great ruler for his people, but being asleep for ten years, thanks to a curse, can put doubts in people's mind. He'll have to show his strength through his actions if he desires to warm everyone's hearts. Especially the heart of the woman who saved him. Now if he can just show her how much of a man he really is.

Final Call

Overall, Radiant Tale: Fanfare was certainly the finale that this fan disk delivered. Packed full of extra content that will bring a smile and a couple of hysterical giggles out of you. The only gripe I'd have to touch on would be that some of the stories felt forced. Like, they were struggling to add a believable outcome to bring everyone's relationship full circle. The new LI's were adorable and more side characters in Otome games need their moment to shine. This game gets my rating of 9 out of 10.

Ladies and Gentlemen! It's been a pleasure, but I must bid you all, adieu! Now then troupes, get your sexy butts in the bag. Don't worry it's magical, you'll fit!

Tengoku Struggle Strayside - Switch Review

Tengoku Struggle Strayside by developer Otomate and publisher Aksys Games and Idea FactorySwitch review written by Natasha with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 5 1/2 minutes

LISTEN UP PRISONERS! You're all aware of the despicable sins that you've committed. *Slams both hands down on a desk* Why else would you be down here???

What's that? You don't know? Then maybe I should educate you on your misdemeanors. *Moves away from the desk to pull out a whip*

You so much as swoon, squeal, screech, moan, pant, fan, or flirt with any of these deliciously SINFUL men, *points towards the five bachelors* you will be punished! *Cracks whip across the floor*

SHOW SOME SELF CONTROL, PEOPLE! THEY'RE JUST 2D MEN!

~

I Sentence you...

A life of infernal punishment is what awaits those who have sinned before death. Tengoku Struggle – Strayside- takes us on a journey through hell as the daughter of the King of Darkness himself. Rin Enma, a transient, has just graduated from her Hell Guardian classes and is tasked with her first mission: retrieve the prisoners who have escaped from hell. Determined to prove her worth, she is blindly assigned some assistance: four notorious criminals who have been hand-picked from the different circles of punishment. Rin, who isn't a fan of men to begin with, reluctantly travels to the human world and begins her search for these escaped inmates. However, she'll have to resist temptation from these clever miscreants, or maybe they'll be able to untangle the threads of doubt of our young maiden's past.

Roll Call

This time around we've been bless-- *Clears throat* excuse me-- assigned some VERY bad boys. It's our job to make sure that they complete the mission of capturing and returning the escaped inmates. The human world is full of temptation for our sinners and it's up to us to keep them in check... too bad they're all so, mischievously, gorgeous.

Yona Murakami (VA: Suzuki Ryouta) {Jack Jeanne}

  • Man of the Sea

  • Sweet Tooth

  • Sir Blushalots

A Tsun-Tsun with fiery red hair, ocean blue eyes and a body that won't quit. Sentenced to the Revival Hell for murder, this sharpshooter has the ability to pierce through your heart. Don't let his lopsided attire fool you into thinking of him as an easy target. He'll fight back with vigour and sometimes doesn't play by the rules. But if you can catch him unaware of your presence, you might find out how big and soft his soul is.

Sharaku Toushuusai (VA: Ishikawa Kaito) {Piofiore, Bustafellows, Dairoku}

  • Love Doctor

  • Mr. Clean

  • Hot Trash

A playboy who is always ready to get down and dirty with anybody. It's no surprise that this sweet talking, hands-on, hat wearing individual was sentenced to the Crushing Hell for perverted acts. Would you really waste your time on such a gigolo? Perhaps, if we brush aside the brown hair that covers half his lovely face; we might be able to charm him into becoming ours, and ours alone.

Kikunosuke Uga (VA: Saitou Souma) {CollarXMalice, Birushana, Charade Maniac}

  • Werewolf in Asakusa

  • Gamer Guy

  • Sis-Con

This pup may have some sharp claws, but he's happy to loaf around and play games all day. Sentenced to the Black Rope Hell, his compact size and nimble foot work makes him an ace in thievery. Don't let his light brown hair and golden eyes fool ya. If you're not too careful he may just steal your heart, so long as you can distract him long enough to stop chasing after his little sister.

Geomon Ishikawa (VA: Yashiro Taku) {Cupid Parasite, Paradigm Paradox}

  • Heinous Criminal

  • Master Chef

  • Timeless Lover

The most ruthless, devious and baddest villain of his time period is also really, REALLY... sweet? Wait. How is someone from the Eternal Hell, the deepest circle of the eight realms of Gehenna, so kind, skillful, and considerate? This criminal who has disheveled brown hair and chocolate coloured eyes can't possibly be the man of our dreams? Or could he be hiding something more?

JacK (VA: Furukawa Makoto) {Steam Prison, Even if Tempest, Cupid Parasite}

  • Let Me Whisk You Away

  • Deja Vu

  • Animal Briber

A two-faced somebody with a strong passion for ceremonial tea serving. This tuxedo hair coloured human has a secret that stretches beyond belief. His heterochromatic eyes have more pull than his magnetic personality that seems to feed off of our naivete, but maybe we just crave to be human again. Could he help us see the light?

Good Behaviour

I've been excited about Tengoku Struggle -Strayside- for quite some time, considering the creator is the same as Olympia Soiree, my #1 Otome Game. So it doesn't surprise me that this story came jam packed with thrills and chills. The biggest key point here is the visuals: beautifully drawn to capture every character's good and bad sides. The colours pop and the detailing that is carefully picked for each individual is evident in their appearance.

We can also never turn a blind eye to the amount of steamy scenes that this game so generously grants us. I won't lie that there were a few that had me bouncing off the walls with excitement. *No lifeforms were hurt in my mass hysterical parading* Though there were times I had to wipe the steam off of my glasses just so I could continue my playthrough.

All and all, if you're looking for a romance visual novel to spice up your life, Tengoku Struggle -Strayside- has got you covered. *Slowly give you a thumps up*

Solitary Confinement

My only gripe about the game was the amount of misspelling and overlooked translations that got missed. I could probably count on both hands fully the amount of mistakes I've picked out in the game's text. Not sure if someone was in a hurry, but if I'm able to point out so many typos then I'm sure others will as well.

To Repent or To Sin

To conclude, Tengoku Struggle was a nice return to a rich story-line packed full of adventures, fantasy inducing shenanigans and gut wrenching moments that will have you screaming “MORE”! This Otome game is recommended for a more mature audience, but if you can take the heat and the heartache then I highly suggest you buckle yourself in, cause you're in for the ride of your life. I'm giving this title my rating of 9.5 out of 10. If they somehow go back in with an update to fix all those grammar mistakes, then this game will bump up to a perfect 10/10!

~

And that's it on today's class! I hope you can take what you've learned to reign in those urges when the going gets hot.

Now, you five! *Points to the main LIs (Love Interests)* I've prepared a Private lesson for all of you! *Closes the classroom door behind the other vacating students with a loud locking sound*

Score: 9.5 / 10
