Lust From Beyond - PC Review

Lust From Beyond by developer Movie Games Lunarium and publisher Movie Games S.A., PlayWay S.A.PC review written by Pierre-Yves with a copy provided by the publisher.

Warning: Mature themes ahead

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Lust From Beyond by Movie Games Lunarium is a first person psychological horror thriller that I easily found myself able to immerse into. Not generally my style of adventure, I became interested in the style after seeing Izzy play through the Amnesia series including the most recent Amnesia: Rebirth. So with that, I was off on my own wild adventure of puzzles and mysteries while watching my sanity drop and suffering its consequences.

For those that may not be aware, like I was at first, Lust From Beyond is the latest entry into its series. Only finding out after having started this adventure, I would be interested to know what came before but I don't really think, at least without having gone through them, that they were necessary to enjoy the latest. So taking things from the top, you will be taking the role of Victor who has been tormented by horrible visions and travels to another city in order to meet with a psychiatrist that may be able to help with the things that he’s been seeing. Least does he know that the visions he’s been having would be the least of his problems.

Disclaimer

Now, upfront, this is anything but a family friendly game. Even if one may choose to play through the adventure in a censored mode, it's not going to hide the stronger elements that exist outside the nudity and sexual themes presented therein. On that note, one potential point that I was going to reserve judgement on was how "tasteful" the nudity and the sexual encounters would be presented as they are presented as early as the first chapter. Now there has been a fine line in the presentation of sexual encounters in video games ranging from true “adult” only titles to those of AAA studios adding them in as a reward of sorts for having successfully romanced someone at what can only seem like the end of the world at that point in time.

Falling more into the middle of the two for the most part, while these scenes both exist and require participation on input commands, they play out in tandem with the story and they didn’t feel like they were simply thrown into the mix because they “could” be. Instead, these scenes felt a bit more calculated as they are written in which I appreciated as throwing sex into the mix just to throw sex into the mix can easily ruin the experience being set up especially with one as “bizarre” as this one with characters being able to pass between two realms and see things that would drive even the most sane of people to madness.

This said, Lust From Beyond while working off of the idea of eroticism, is about a lot more than that. Finding himself in the middle of the yearly event, not only will you need to guide Victor through town in order to find his way forward, you’re also going to have to find your way around the insanity of a cult that will easily hunt you down to do more than just kill if they get their hands on you. So not only is this not family friendly, it’s also not for the faint of heart or the weak stomached as there are certain elements that can make you cringe and wonder just what the hell is wrong with these people. Think… Hostel and Hostel II but place Victor in the middle of things and that’s about where things get interesting as there’s only so much a person can take and some of these sights? They’ll drop your sanity hard as some of what you see is more than enough to make someone's stomach turn at the gruesome sights that await you.

So it’s right here that I want to take a moment to both acknowledge and thank the developers for paying attention to their player’s feedback which is why this review is later than it should have been. Having both a health and a sanity meter, once your health drops, the obvious happens and you die. Game Over. Once your sanity drops however, on launch, it would mess with your controls which means forwards would stop being forward and go in another direction. Left and Right would swap. Playing with a controller if you had to press back to move forwards, you couldn’t run and I was quite literally stuck in a chase scene because the controls just wouldn’t let me move past it. Without the ability to load a previous chapter point or manual saves, I had to restart and avoid the sanity drops as best as possible to just HOPEFULLY get through that point.

So it’s on April 1, 2021, this past weekend and not a joke, that the developers pushed out a Lust From Beyond v1.0.1 which fixed this giant issue with sanity and instead had it act more like you would actually expect the loss of sanity to do. You see things that aren’t there, not unlike The Sinking City where even the imaginary monsters can kill you if you think that they are as real as the real ones. Just this small change for us, and most likely enormous change in the back end code for the developers changes what was a potentially flawed good into a good experience.

When you’re not flat out running away from people or monsters trying to kill you though, you’ll either be exploring at a leisurely pace or sneaking around trying to not get caught. The environments are interesting to explore and what I really enjoyed is how much effort went into the ability to manipulate doors especially after reading an article not that long ago on IGN about the woes of developers Putting Doors in Video Games. While exploring through various locations, you’ll be putting your hands on door handles and then either opening them slowly or quickly and then closing them if you choose to. There’s a natural feel to how you handle it so when you’re running away from someone? You’d better be quick to get your hand on the handle and hope that the door isn’t locked so that you can throw it open and keep on running through.

The above is not to say that Lust From Beyond is perfect. For some reason, my main computer couldn’t actually handle it without shutting itself off after a time which was weird as my laptop could carry it through for hours without a hiccup. I'm not sure how wide spread the issue is, but from other posts I know that I am not the only one. Regardless of the platform though, for those using a controller it would have been nice to be able to navigate through everything from the initial load into the game while using it instead of requiring the use of a mouse or keyboard to get past certain screens. Finally, if I did have one thing on my wishlist it would be a chapter select which while the devs say that they can’t promise anything they will look into it.

Summary

Lust From Beyond is definitely not for the faint of heart or for the weak stomached but it is an interesting dive into the realms of the occult and insanity that can appear especially when dealing with the likes of H.P. Lovecraft, H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. Interesting puzzles, crazier environments and even more psychotic cultists and monsters trying to hunt you down, there’s a hell of an adventure to be had if you’ve got the stomach, and the age, for it.

Score: 8 / 10

The Sinking City - PS5 Review

The Sinking City by developer and publisher FrogwaresSony PlayStation 5 review written by Pierre-Yves with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Having originally released in the summer of 2019 for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and the PC, Frogwares' The Sinking City is back once again with a fresh coat of paint and an upgrade under the hood in this H.P. Lovecraft inspired action adventure horror story.

Containing everything from the original as well as the added DLCs that have come out over time, the return to this half sunken and downtrodden city of fictional Oakmont, Massachusetts was interesting to say the least. Arriving in search of the source of the nightmarish visions and dreams that our protagonist has been having, you soon find yourself wrapped up in both a missing person's and murder investigation. Being new in town and being told by the powers will be to do it, you have no other choice but to get sleuthing.

The Sinking City was in no way perfect when it originally released. While there were certain aspects that could be overlooked such as the graphics and the performance on the older set of consoles, it was clear that the upgrades to the PlayStation 5 (and seemingly the Series X) took care of some of these. Mechanically the controls no longer feel PS2 era blocky for lack of a better term. Now, exploration is smooth enough and where a fair amount of improvement can be seen in are the shooting mechanics aspect of combat.

Aiming your variety of guns such as a 9mm, 6 chambered revolver, machine gun, shotgun and long barreled rifle feels more natural then it used to. Added in for the PS5 only through the DualSense is that the trigger has been given a bit of resistance making you actually have to "pull the trigger" on your camera and firearms. The part of combat that still feels a little clunky however is attacking monsters or other humans trying to kill you with your spade. Upgrades in the skill tree can be acquired to swing faster which makes it a little more natural but the movements don't reflect this and honestly? You'll generally be wanting to use guns when it comes to the monsters that literally go bump in the night.

Other issues that haven't been resolved and are a little more clear this time around is how empty the world feels. If a building on the side of the street is not involved in either remain or a secondary quest it just stands there. There's no way to open the door, there's no way to go inside, there's just, nothing. And where this becomes the most noticeable is if you are playing The Sinking City for the second time. The reason is you already know where to go so when you get to where you need to be, the door will still be locked as you unfortunately still need to sleuth out the clues in order to move forward.

For those playing for the first time though, not only will part of the above be a non-issue, but, you can easily find yourself sinking into your role especially if you go from main or side quest into the next immediately. Following these paths one after another will make the world feel less empty as you will be talking to people and exploring spaces regardless of if there are monsters awaiting you or not. Sadly, the same won't be said for returning players unless you really don't remember what happened the first time around and everything is fresh enough for you.

On a final note, I still found myself being impressed by the monsters both real and imaginary. A large part of this adventure revolves around our protagonist's sanity and if it gets too low monsters will start coming out and they are very much real because the mind thinks they are real. There are stimulants that can be used and then these become nothing more than vaporus shadows, BUT, beware as sometimes real monsters tagged along for the ride.

So overall, The Sinking City's revamp on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X is worthwhile if you've been thinking of giving this Lovecraftian tale another go or had missed out on it the first time. With several upgrades and a new smoothness to the gameplay, going back for seconds alongside the added DLC was not a bad way to spend a few dozen hours.

Score: 7.5 / 10

Frogwares' HP Lovecraft Inspired Survival Horror The Sinking City New Cinematic Trailer - News

The more that I see, the more I wonder what I've gotten myself into when I told my brother Marc and my best friend Chris that we would play this on 103" screen and that I would be the one holding the controller... ah well. I just won't sleep for a while!

Excerpt from a witness statement dating from August 21, 1932, obtained in Providence by H.P. Lovecraft as part of "The Sinking City" case file

The case will be reopened on March 21, 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Lesquin, France, August 21, 2018

"Before we go any further, allow me to tell you about Charles Winfield Reed. When I met him, he had just arrived at our hospital after having been found, alone and as-if possessed, on a desert island, lost in the middle of the ocean. He was a veteran of the First World War, and had been a crewmember on the USS Cyclops. I never found out exactly what happened, but he was the only survivor of a catastrophe he recounted as being "supernatural", and which cost the lives of every other crewmember […]

He was here for quite some time before he could convince the staff that he was better and could be released. I never believed it: he was haunted by nightmarish, cycloptic visions that he couldn't make sense of. But in his heart they begat an unreasoning fear and frightening disquiet, driving him inevitably deeper and deeper into madness. Who knows what his tortured soul had seen and forgotten… He seemed incurably drawn to Oakmont, a small village in Massachusetts in New England, where he felt he "must go". I believe that's why he did whatever he had to in order to leave.

Once flourishing and industrial, Oakmont was devastated by a vast flood which submerged half the town, and led to cases of mass hysteria. According to local inhabitants, the ocean exerted some sort of evil and perverse influence. Is he to be believed? And yet, Oakmont is now a lost town, partly underwater, enveloped in shadows, where madness mingles with despair. This is the location where Charles Winfield Reed hoped to find answers to his questions. By searching every corner and every quarter – residential, commercial, industrial, rich, poor – he believed he'd be able to rip loose the veil hiding his lost memories, and bring to light the "horrors hiding inside, biding their time to submerge the world". At least, that's how he saw things […] If you want to know more, you'll have to check the archives, here or there. But I haven't any idea what happened to him after he left… If you ever happen across him, I'd be very interested in hearing the rest of the story… Could you do that for me?"

The Sinking City is set for release on March 21st 2019 on PC, PlayStation®4 and Xbox One.

Tesla vs Lovecraft - PC Review

Eldritch horrors or advanced electrical sciences? Why not a bit of both? In a bid to stop Nicolas Tesla, H.P. Lovecraft begins to unleash the unspeakable horrors to destroy a machine that could lead to catastrophic events if it is not turned off. Basically saying "no", Tesla will unleash the full might of science and maybe some spectral magic in order to take down Lovecraft. Seriously, what could go wrong?

10Tons are really good at what they do. Having already sat down to one of their previous entries Crimsonland with my friend, and now fellow reviewer, Louis, we once again took up controllers for some twin-stick coop action against the hordes of unspeakable horrors.

Tesla vs Lovecraft from the outset felt solid in its mechanics but a little light on its features. This lasts just about as long as it takes for you to make it through the tutorial stages. Once those are done both your Nicholas Tesla and everyone else that joins (up to four players total) will all get the chance to unleash hell on the hordes coming your way.

Each stage through the various difficulties are represented by a pin on the city map of that particular plane that represents the difficulty. Each have their own colour schemes both for the map and for the stages within. Once you've jumped into the stage this is where everything starts and hopefully ends on a good note for you and your cohorts.

For the stages themselves, there are multiple different styles that can appear such as a downtown city core, the inside of a mountain, a graveyard and variations of all of the above. Each one of these have passageways and specifically designed "killboxes" for both you to use and for you to trap yourself in if you're not careful. Massive amounts of firepower is one thing, knowing when to run away is another.

Moving Tesla around each stage is easy. You move with the left stick, you aim with the right stick and then you fire your weapon with the right trigger. This is fairly standard for a top down shooter because I mean come on, it works. From there however Tesla has the ability to teleport through obstacles like fences or specific holes in walls in order to get to safety or to lay down a trap for everything coming his way. Adding in some extra powers that have certain amount of usages, he's almost fully equipped.

Each stage starts off with Tesla being level 1 and having only a simple pistol in order to combat the hordes charging towards him. As the stage and the overall game progress more weapons become unlocked in order to use. Standard weaponry, Tesla's electrical inventions and gauss will all make an appearance in multiple forms so finding what you like won't be hard, finding it on the map sometimes can be if it's not in the weapon spawn order.

Like the weapon selection, Perks are available either by picking them up on the ground as a reward for taking out a fair amount of enemies or by leveling up. Each level up grants the choice of two perks and as things continue other features such as re-shuffling them or gaining the choice of a random Epic perk (seriously game breaking in the best way possible).

All of these features come together for a seriously well designed package but it still has its flaws. Each stage has a meter that demonstrates how far along you are and how many enemies are currently there with you. The issues lie in the fact that the meter isn't always a good representation of how far along you are because sometimes it'll drop like a rock while other times it'll stay at zero for two whole minutes while the enemies keep spawning out of portals making you wonder exactly how much longer you can hold out.

Before wrapping up, there is one feature that I really want to highlight. Back again, because I remember it from Crimsonland, is that as players get further away from one another the screen zooms out in order to show everyone where they are. Players are never blocked from moving somewhere else because they are too far from one another. Does it get crazy because you can barely see where you are? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely.

Tesla vs Lovecraft is amazingly designed and holds hours worth of twin-stick enjoyment. With three well scaled difficulties, a crazy hard survival mode that will truly put your skills and luck (for perks and weapons) to the test, the only thing I wish I could have had more of was some cinematic because they were awesome.
