Sengoku Dynasty - PS5 Review

Sengoku Dynasty by developer Superkami and publisher Toplitz ProductionsSony PlayStation 5 review written by Jim with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated Reading Time:  6 minutes.

Sengoku Dynasty is a survival village builder set in the Sengoku period of Japanese history. I don't know as much as I would like about the Japanese past, but I do know it was a hard time of almost constant civil wars. Because of the setting and time period, I was eager to try it! The game will provide a brief overview of the history in the opening cutscene. The scene is actually a really nice Japanese-style art with a Japanese voice-over. A nice touch considering the game's setting.

Aside from the opening cutscene, once you start a new game, there are five difficulty settings: creative mode that lets you be creative as you want, chillout a relaxed mode that is its verison of easy mode, normal mode that is a blance between easy and hard (this is the mode I played on and enjoyed it as it was the right ammount of challange), hardcore mode that will really add a chalange to the gameplay, and lastly there is custom mode that lets you pick all the settings you want or don't want. Once you choose what difficulty you want, you will be able to make a character. The character creator is limited; there are only a handful of options. Although this isn't a huge deal to me, I know other players love creating their own characters and can do it for hours. You can also play the game with online coop, but because I don't know anyone with the game, I was not able to try this out.

You start shipwrecked with a woman whom you will help, and this also serves as a brief tutorial on the game's very basics. You will have to gather sticks and stones to craft an axe so you can cut trees and then a hammer. You will then have to use your hammer to make a campfire for you and the woman. She will give you some food as a reward. As you do things, you will get hungry over time. Like in many other survival games, you will have to forage for food and cook if you want to live longer.

Once done, you will set off, and not far from you is a burnt-down town. Here you will learn about how to build a village and rebuild the burnt-down village. The beginning of the game is a bit repetitive because you have to build everything and find everything yourself. It is also a bit overwhelming, but if you stick with it like I did, it becomes a lot more enjoyable the more I played and got used to what I was supposed to do.

There are quests in the game that you can do to earn money, items, and experience. There are different kinds, like main quests, that help you learn the game, and doing them will let you build more villages. There are also side quests and personal quests, like getting married. Once you get some villagers in your town, they will also offer quests for you to do, but you only have one season to complete them, and lots of times they ask for hard-to-get items or other items for which you have not unlocked recipes.

Unlocking new recipes can range from leveling up your dynasty by doing things like recruiting new villagers and doing quests. Other ways are with money, by unlocking certain things on the skill tree, by getting certain items or crafting certain things, and lastly by conquering areas on the map by completing certain goals like building watchtowers or bridges.

Once you have some villagers, you can set them to work at different production buildings, like the forger's hut, which lets you set someone to find different things from stone, sticks, food, mushrooms, and other such things. You can also set someone here to craft medicine, build huts for miners, loggers, and so much more. As your village grows, the needs of your villagers will also grow. It will start with needing food for them, but as you get more villagers, you will have to get them or have them make stuff for beverages, maintenance, security, medical, spiritual, and luxury.

There are four skill trees to level up by doing each one's purpose, like dynasty will have you building new buildings or crafting new items, doing quests, and of course, getting new villagers. This skill tree can be used to reduce villagers' needs and help them work better. Next is the craftsman tree. You earn experience for this by mining, logging, building, and doing quests. This skill tree will help you become better at doing things like chopping down trees while losing less stamina, and your axes, picks, and hammers will break less often.

Then there is the warrior tree, from which you get experience from hunting animals and fighting enemies. You will get better at fighting with parries and better blocking with this skill tree. This skill tree also makes attacks stronger and getting more health and stamina. Lastly, we have the monk skill tree. You gain experience for this by buying and selling items to traders and by making offerings at shrines. I found this skill tree the hardest to level up. The benefits for leveling up, though, are pretty good, like letting you get more experience for the crafting, warrior, and monk skill trees. You get one point to spend every time you level up.

Combat in the game can feel a little wonky at first, but as you level up your warrior skill tree, you will be able to block and parry attacks. There is something called poise in the game, but I never could really figure it out other than if you or an enemy loses enough of it, they will become off balance and won't be able to move for a few seconds. I did like that each weapon felt different. An example of this is attacking with a sword is faster than attacking with a heavy weapon, but it doesn't have the range a spear has. You can also use a bow to attack and hunt. Another cool touch the devs added was that if you injure an animal like a deer, it will run slower than a deer at full health because it's injured.

There isn't a lot of music in the game. At times, there will be background music, but it also seems as if it's a track or two per season. I wish there was a little more music when you're in combat. The sound effects, on the other hand, are peaceful. Really hearing birds chirping and water running when you're near a river is oddly relaxing.

Graphically, the game gets the job done. It isn't groundbreaking or anything, but it looks decent for what it is. At times, I did run into some glitches, like plants you can harvest showing, but you can't harvest them. Also, the ground would sometimes load and be blurry for a few seconds when moving. I will say that it has gotten a lot better with the last patch, but it still happens on rare occasions.

Now, although I found the game enjoyable for the most part, I ran into some issues that really brought down the fun factor for me. One was in the map or in menus where my cursor would move all around on its own. This makes placing waypoints on the map a pain in the butt, and not to mention when you're trying to get a certain item in your inventory, and it moves to another where you drop or transfer the wrong item! Sometimes I couldn't even get the cursor to move at all. This made me wonder if the pc version would be a better experience because of a mouse or if it too has the same issue. The other issue I ran into was that I conquered an area on the map, but it never showed it as mine, so I was pretty much locked out of owning that area on the map. It made me feel this game needed a lot more testing before it was fully released.

After sinking over 50 hours into the game I did enjoy what I played, but the issues I ran into made it feel like I would have to restart from the beginning more than once. That made me want to play less because after sinking over 20 hours into one game and over 20 again in another save, I just lose interest in wanting to conquer the game. That includes getting married in either of my playthroughs. I never made it far enough to make it through the marrage quest line. I do know that once you get married and have a child, you can carry on the game as the child. But again, I was never able to make it this far before something happened that made me have to restart or made me feel like I should restart. If the devs fix these issues, I would probably love this game a lot more than I thought I would when I first started, but because of these issues, I just can't make myself restart a new game yet again. If this were an early access game, I could be a bit more forgiving, but because it's a full release, I can't fully recommend it on PS5 until it's been patched. I would gladly give this game a higher score once these issues are resolved, but until then.

Score: 6.75 / 10

Fend off Enemy Raids in Bushido Update of Sengoku Dynasty!

Oberhaching, Germany, June 25, 2025 | Developer Superkami and Publisher Toplitz Productions announce that the next major content update for their genre-blend Sengoku Dynasty is now available.

Since its release in Early Access, the mix of life-sim, settlement builder, survival adventure and action underwent a slow transformation with a plethora of meaningful updates, based on both the extensive roadmap as well as the invaluable player feedback. The new content pack ‘Bushidō’, updating the game to version 1.1,  is no exception and delivers a new threat to the Nata Valley in the form of raids by various villainous factions. However, since Sengoku Dynasty wants to cater to the players’ gameplay preferences as much as possible, raids can be deactivated as well, if a more peaceful experience is preferred.

But what are raids? Bandits will not only roam the area or inhabit small camps. They will eventually start to attack your villages, try to capture your bell tower and ransack your dynasty storage. So set up your defenses, employ guards and make sure that your villagers are safe - or at least that you can catch the raiders and reclaim the loot before they disappear.

While you can minimize the risk by attacking and destroying bandit camps on your expeditions into the scenic world of Sengoku Dynasty, you can never be fully safe. Thankfully, rumors spread fast in Nata Valley, so you will hear of an upcoming attack with enough time to prepare your defensive tactics.

Additionally the ‘Bushidō’ update includes a wide variety of bug fixes, enhancements and quality-of-life improvements to make the player’s journey through Sengoku Dynasty a truly memorable one. For the full patch notes please visit the official Steam product page.

Sengoku Dynasty is available for PC on Steam, GOG.com and the Epic Games Store. Console versions are in development and slated for release this Summer.

Simulation Village Builder Sengoku Dynasty 1.0 is Out on PC!

Oberhaching, Germany, November 7th 2024 - Developer Superkami and publisher Toplitz Productions are excited to announce that their multi genre open-world village builder, life simulation and survival game Sengoku Dynasty Version 1.0 is now available on PC.

After just over a year in early access, and with several defining content updates under its belt, the immersive world of medieval Japan is brought to life in stunning detail.

PC players can now embark on their own legacy in single player or with up to three of their friends in multiplayer in the co-op mode as they begin to create their own dynasty set in feudal Japan's tumultuous past.

With the release of version 1.0, Sengoku Dynasty introduces significant new features, including regions you can conquer to secure your rise to dominance. Face more dangerous bandits and their camps as you fight for control - now also in FPP. Players also have the option to skip the battles and focus on unlocking new regions through peaceful means and securing access to rare resources to unlock unique technologies, propelling their dynasty forward. This system offers deeper immersion into feudal Japan's constant territorial struggles, providing players with dynamic regional control. While combat and conquest enhance progression.

A character editor and playable female character also round out the new customization content now available for players.

Combining its rich blend of survival, crafting and exploration, PC Players will need to set about transforming a famine-stricken and war-torn land and building a settlement where its inhabitants can thrive. Resources such as bamboo, wood, ore and stone will be key materials in construction. Not only that, but these resources will also provide the raw materials to develop the farming tools and weapons they need such as bows and even katanas, essential for protecting their communities from the bandits that roam the countryside.

Sengoku Dynasty has been a labor of love for Superkami which has maintained a priority to ensure a realistic and faithful representation of the historical context of 16th century Japan from traditional craftsmanship, weapons and fabrics, to buildings, architecture and customs through extensive development research.

Players will have the opportunity to undertake the foundation of traditional subsistence and resource-based economies, all of which are integral to Sengoku Dynasty’s many tasks of village management. Aspects such as mining, smithing, hunting and farming are at the core of a stable and self proficient community.

Sengoku Dynasty’s major content updates have been transformative in enhancing the gameplay experience during early access, refining player progression, improving A.I, daily village production and consumption balancing, expanding farming options as well as introducing an intuitive combat system.

Jan Cieslar, CEO of Superkami, comments “We are grateful for Sengoku Dynasty’s time in Early Access and all the feedback we've received from our community. You've helped shape the game into what it is today. We're excited about Sengoku Dynasty’s future—there’s still much to come in 2025, including console ports that will bring the game to new players for the first time.”

Sengoku Dynasty provides PC players with a choice to build their legacy from the ground up, choosing to embrace the lifestyle of either a monk, leader, craftsman or warrior and use the perks of each specialization as they forge their dynasty and honor the traditions of Japan’s historic past.

Sengoku Dynasty Review

Sengoku Dynasty by developer Superkami and publisher Toplitz Productions—PC (Steam) review written by Susan N. with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Introduction

As one would expect, Sengoku Dynasty is a survival colony builder set in Feudal Japan during the Sengoku Period which was a major turning point in history. Shogun rule was out of hand and the provinces erupted into civil war over the course of many years. Notably three figures stand out as the ones who paved the way to Japan's unification. Knowing this, Sengoku Dynasty is set during a time period that is tumultuous, but was the birth of modern day Japan. And for the most part, the game has a great foundation and I enjoyed my time with it.

Gameplay

Upon loading the game, I was greeted with a beautiful cutscene that was brilliantly voice acted in Japanese accompanied by sub-titles in English. My character ends up shipwrecked on the shores of what is referred to as the 'peasant kingdom'. My shipmate, Ako, washed up elsewhere. First, I looted the wreckage for supplies and set out to find the other survivor. She is not far down the beach and my journey begins.

Like many survival games, it is paramount to find shelter, food, and water, which is thankfully abundant in the area. I grabbed a bunch of resources and headed to the nearest town. Once there, I set out to build a new set of buildings that aren't charred husks. As I've played a bunch of colony building games, I began building a house and a foraging hut in preparation of amassing other townspeople. Though, I may have jumped the gun a bit because the quests take you through the whole process.

As I explored more of the map, I found some merchants and stumbled upon a shrine or two, both of which are integral to the prosperity of my village. Merchants have resources that might not be attainable in the beginning, while shrines impress the importance of faith in Japanese culture. If given the correct offering, they will give experience towards one of the skill trees that have various boosts I could use.

Overall, I love the direction of the game as it has a solid foundation in the genre. But I do have some gripes with it as I started building a Dynasty from the ground up, literally. The time period is appropriate for this genre as it doesn't have a grim dark theme like other survival games. The characters, while they aren't the most fleshed out, each have their own wishes. And the atmosphere created by the sound effects and scenery is spectacular. It is a promising and fun title that I both enjoy and also feel conflicted about. However, as the game is still very much in Early Access, there are some quality of life features that the developers might consider addressing. I'll get to those later.

Graphics and UI

Sengoku Dynasty is a graphically beautiful game. Its water effects are quite stunning, the characters are well drawn, and the peasant kingdom is lush with trees and berries. The options menu which allows adjustment for graphics settings has a decent amount of customization, but unfortunately does not allow for reduction of some of the more graphically intensive events like rain effects.

The UI design for the game holds a bunch of minor frustrations. While many of them are not game breaking, the UI has a ton of clunky elements that could break the experience for players. Starting with the basics, I like that the look is simple. On the bottom left is the Sengoku icon with bars that display your food consumption, health bar, and energy. It takes a ton of basic foods to fill up, yet the NPC's need a fraction of food for the same effect. In the middle on the left, you will see the actively set quest along with a strike-through if a step has been completed. On the right of the screen is an icon displaying the tool you have active. Tools can be active once you assign them to the hotbar in the character menu by hitting 'tab.' If a tool is active, a durability bar will appear on the right-hand side of it. While I like the simplistic design, I'd much rather be able to see the whole hotbar.

At the top of the screen is a compass which will show nearby points of interest, direction, and a smaller bar. The bar indicates how much time has passed during the day, but since there is no specific value, it's easy to lose track of the time. Overall, the on screen UI is solid but has minor gripes.

When in the other screens, and more specifically the Dynasty screen, the design is not ideal. Each tab on the left displays information about your villages, population, and jobs of your people. They give you information regarding total population, what jobs the people have, their happiness levels, etc... Other tabs display more specific information related to the types of storage buildings erected, village names, and if your people have houses. While these tabs contain valuable information that contribute to the success and prosperity of your villages, it is unclear how to assign people to houses or jobs.

Pros and Cons

To simplify my thoughts on Sengoku Dynasty, I'll give a list of pros and cons I found with the game. In future, I hope that some of the issues will be addressed during the early access phase so that other players will have an enjoyable experience.

Among the good qualities are:
  • Stunning graphics. Everything from the foliage to the water effects are incredibly well done for a survival sandbox game. There are some amazing shrines, character models, and animations that enhance the gameplay experience with its realism.
  • Land size. As the game is an open-world sandbox that can be explored, the large landmass that you have to build on is fantastic. Having to run around for resources illustrates the vastness of the island without being too large that it feels prohibitive.
  • Co-op capabilities. Sengoku Dynasty can be played with friends! Feel free to message a gaming buddy and set your sights on building an epic empire together. No more having to wait on slow moving NPC's to do the job for you!
  • Sound design. I must admit that the audio is immersive. While there is no voice acting in the game, the ambient sounds draw you in. Birds are chirping, trees are shifting, and rain falls. The attention to detail in the sound design is nothing short of amazing and I love the atmosphere it creates.
  • Hotkey customization. It goes without saying that a game which allows the player the ability to modify hotkeys is a wonderful decision. Not only does it provide a bit of accessibility, but it gives people the freedom to use a combination they are accustomed to.

Some of the less than desired qualities are:
  • Unintuitive UI. The menus under the Dynasty tab are among the largest offenders in my opinion. It wouldn't take much to add a border or something to indicate that a specific portion can be interacted with. It's only after scrolling over text that players see that there is an interactable area.
  • The map. Overall, I like that the map has a legend that indicates important places of note. However, the two gripes I have with it are: the inability to re-press 'M' to close the map and the inability to zoom in. Many games allow for people to press the same button to open and close a window, not one way. As for the zooming, it would be much easier to plot your exploration route if you can see more specifically where you are. Plus, I dislike the overlaid text when you are in a village and the 'you' text muddles the village name.
  • No pause button. I understand that in a co-op game mode there should be no ability to pause (or it pauses for everyone). In a single player game, pausing the game on the options screen would be a great quality of life feature. Personally, I wouldn't want my village to be attacked while I'm grabbing some food in another room.
  • Lack of refined video options. Mainly the issue I have with this is the inability to reduce the weather effects. It is part of the reason that Sengoku Dynasty eats a lot of RAM and can lessen the great gameplay experience for some of your players. Even on medium graphics settings, the game struggled at points, and that sucked. Nothing was more frustrating than the amount of issues other players had in a co-op game.
  • Locked buildables. I'm completely fine with having a progression system, especially in a survival sandbox game, but the icon that shows the lock button is not prominent enough, in my opinion. It is clearly a padlock, yet the color needs to be more striking as it is unclear to some. Most other colors are contrasted well enough with the game palette that this isn't a major issue.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Sengoku Dynasty is a great entry into the survival and colony builder genres. It is set during an important period in history for Japan which adds to the appeal of playing the game. The developers have done a fantastic job with the sound design, visuals, and overall gameplay which captivates players for hours on end. Even with the minor issues that I found with the game like strange UI choices or lack of handy features like a pause option, I found myself having fun! So long as the developers consider optimizing the game before its full launch as I found the load time to be ridiculous, survival fans will likely have a great time. Despite that fact, I enjoyed my time with Sengoku Dynasty enough to give it a solid 8 out of 10.
