London Has Fallen - Movie Review

I am a fan of Gerard Butler so I wouldn’t miss “London has fallen”. The title prepares you for something extreme but the plot is totally crazy. Some of the world’s greatest political leaders, including the American President, decide to go for a visit to a planet ruled by terrorists. Why do they do that? I don’t know. Even more strangely, the planet looks exactly like London. Anyway, as expected, the terrorists start killing the leaders and the only one left alive is the American President, who becomes their number one target. Since this is a different planet the police and military forces of our world can do nothing to help him except to watch the action through satellite images. What action? I forgot to mention that the President is escorted by his faithful, super-hyper-ultra effective bodyguard, Mike Banning, who is played by Butler.

Deadpool - Movie Review

I am not a fan of Deadpool but I was curious about his first major cinematic appearance. I thought it could be fun. The first sequence is great in terms of direction and originality, using camera to convey a unique sense of action. It was fun too, especially when Deadpool makes a childish drawing of him shooting a bad guy and then shows the drawing to a villain and asks him “have you seen this guy?”. What follows is mediocre though.

Crimson Peak - Movie Review

“Crimson Peak” is a story with ghosts, not a ghost story; that’s what Edith, the heroine, said when asked about the book she was writing, in a smart self-reference of the movie. The ghosts serve as a metaphor for the past. Black Mass - Movie Review

Some movies are advertised a lot but when I watch them I wonder why. “Black Mass” is one of them. The story is about a gangster who makes a deal with an FBI agent in order to bring down the Italian mafia in Boston during the seventies. At first I thought the movie’s problem was going to be Depp’s make up but I was wrong. In fact, Depp looking like a vampire makes sense because he is called “Whitey”, which probably means he has some sort of rare skin condition. On the other hand, the movie suffers due to a lack of focus, creativity and cohesion.

“The Walk”’s trailer I saw consists of one scene: a young man approaches the edge of a skyscraper’s roof, stares up ahead at another skyscraper of equally immense height, then climbs on a metal beam stretching over the void and balances on one leg. Without any words you can tell he intends to try something unimaginable. The skyscrapers are the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the movie, based on a true story, takes place in 1974, when they had just been built.

Everest - Movie Review

I am not interested in mountain climbing or extreme sports so I didn’t expect to like “Everest”. The first half hour seemed to confirm my expectations. It’s that not that something was wrong with the movie. The characters were developed properly and I learnt how hard their journey would be. Moreover, Rob, leader of the expedition team, was a person I liked from the first minute. I just couldn’t relate to the characters’ goal; their experience is something I am totally unfamiliar with.
