So for something a little different over the holidays, I got to read the first issue of Read Only Memories which acts as the sequel to Midboss’ 2064: Read Only Memories and the prequel to the upcoming Read Only Memories: NEURODIVER. Having not actually played the 2015 release of 2064: ROM, I picked it up over the holidays on the Steam Winter Sales as after reading through the first issue of the comic series? I’m hooked and I need to know more of where Lexi Rivers comes from.
Taking it from the top, Issue #1 of ROM starts off Lexi’s newest adventure in which after some fine dining with a narcissist as the request of their wife, she finds herself investigating the disappearance of a man named John. Approached by his lover who happens to be a sentient robot, Lexi finally caves and starts to dig around as her curiosity has been piqued.

The artstyle for the comic series uses a lot of colors that we would generally associate with cyberpunk and it fits perfectly. Blues, Purples and the various hues in-between. Would I say that it’s the most leading color palette to perfect levels of contrast? No, but I sure as hell loved the style as it immediately sold the setting and the vibe that it was going for. Also helping ROM set its own style are the character models that use these colors well with the exaggeratedly elongated visual designs of the humans.
In terms of narrative presentation, ROM blends the inside and outside voices very well. Acting a bit like a first person narrative in a novel, there’s just something about that style in a visual landscape that allows for the actual inside and outside voices to mesh so well as you can see the thoughts on screen. Only helping this out is that ROM is very well written and it was easy to sink into it. The only issue? It was over way too fast and I right then and there wanted my hands on the second issue.
Summary
So really that’s about it for now. Verdict? Pick it up! Read Only Memories can be picked up over on Amazon’s comiXology App / Website and if the comic is anything to go by, I’m looking forward to sitting down to 2064: Read Only Memories.
