Intro 

This week, we’re talking about tunes that took a little time for this author to fully appreciate. Not because they’re bad—far from it—but because they needed a few listens before earning their place in this series.

Chrono Trigger - Carnival

I love this tune now. It’s playful, charming, and instantly puts you in a good mood. I also appreciate how it appears early in the game—right before the story takes a darker, more serious turn. A perfect tonal contrast.

Keio Flying Squadron - Big Boss Blues

Honestly, I should’ve loved this one from the start. It has that same chaotic, avant-garde energy as “Captain Neo” from Darius—which we featured way back in MM #10.

Must’ve been a slow day on my end.

Super Mario Land 2 - Star Maze

I know this might sound odd, but no matter what anyone says, this track always reminds me of the chorus in “Desert Rose” by Eric Johnson.

Persona 3 Portable - A Way of Life

In classic Persona fashion, this one checks all the right boxes: silky vocals, a smooth melody, and bittersweet lyrics.

It may not hit as hard as other Persona tracks we’ve featured, but it's still a solid tune that deserves more love.

Evil Twin: Cyprien’s Chronicles - Tsoul’i

I know next to nothing about this game, but this track? Semi-haunting, semi-melancholic, and completely immersive. Of all the tracks listed this week, this one took the longest to click—but better late than never, right?

Memorable Music in Gaming #50

After a long sabbatical, here's the latest Memorable Music article from Hamza! There's a lot of key aspects to a video game. Visuals, storytelling and frankly, just if it's fun to play. Music however, is often one of the most memorable aspects to any video game. At least, if the music is done well - and Chrono Trigger seems to top the list of Memorable Music in gaming this week.

 

Chrono Trigger (SNES) - Secret of the Forest

It's no secret that Chrono Trigger has one of the finest soundtracks in gaming history. The vast wealth of fantastic tracks could easily have an entire article written around them - but to choose just five for this series, I'll go with these.

This is among my most-repeated tracks, so ethereal and soothing it is. The sustained hollow notes give off goosebumps like no other.

Chrono Trigger (SNES) - Corridors of Time

There’s something positively addictive about the tribal-esque, thumping nature of this track. It at once conjures up mystical and mythical imagery.

Chrono Trigger (SNES) - To Far Away Times

This one has all the hallmarks of a typical progressive rock song, à la Dream Theater or Opeth. The starting is all upbeat pop tempo, which then leads way to an excellent melodious interlude, before sending us off on long flowing notes.

Chrono Trigger (SNES) - Peaceful Days

How appropriate is the title? Just the opening notes are enough to turn any day into a peaceful day, guaranteed. Listening to this makes one ready to pack up for a wonderful, unforgettable adventure.

Chrono Trigger (SNES) - Wind Scene

I’ll die on the hill that Wind Scene is perhaps the quintessential track of Chrono Trigger. If you have a friend who hasn’t played the game, play Wind Scene. This is bound to convince them, no words required.

Memorable Music in Gaming #46

Hello from my computer desk here at Chalgyr's Game Room. I'm the Site Administrator, Valerie, and I'm here to put in my little piece on Memorable Music in Gaming. So, while I clean off my desk (sounds of equipment and papers flying  to the floor) I'm going to attempt to master this controller I bought second hand to try out. I can still hear my children giggling as they roll on the floor laughing loudly at my attempts to play Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES we had waaaay back when! Invariably there are tons of games music out there that I love, but the Editor in Chief limited me to these, *grins wickedly* so, I found the OST's for all of them!

FFVII - Advent Children OST

Okay, okay, I do know this was a movie, but it is based on the game and I enjoy listening to the music in it! I never did say I was doing this in order by years, now, was I? The music in this draws out my emotions like no other. I am drawn to Materia, Black Water mostly as well as One-Winged Angel. I am a big fan of all of Nobuo Uematsu's works.

Subnautica OST

This one I was so engrossed in this game that I actually fled back to my base upon first sighting of the reaper and I wasn't even close enough for it to get to me! Yep, the music in this game just draws me right in! The sound effects for the creatures was spot on as well! Kept me on my toes!

The Talos Principle OST

I love puzzle games and the music in this one was both soothing and encouraging when I got stuck. Seriously, if any of you suffer from anxiety attacks, pull out this game or Hob to help you out of that jam. Concentrating on what to do in either of those games helped me through many a battle with my own mind.

Mass Effect OST

I'm still only in the first game, but I find this game has it 's ups and downs for music. On the upside, the opening theme and Noveria pulled me right along as with most of the music. Liara’s World sounded like midtones of wonder, and left me hanging in dread. The downside was that dread. Sometimes it felt like it wouldn't go away even after completing a quest. It certainly is keeping me on the 'straight and narrow' though!

I only played this game once or twice at a friend's place. Nope, never finished the game as I would grow so nostalgic from the music and end up dying repeatedly. This cemented my love of playing games on my PC because I wasn't good with controllers. Makes for a hilarious time though trying to help me with those 'combo moves' that only my friend had in his head! I will button mash to my heart's content, Thank you! (Note: Youtube isn't available)
