  • Culdcept the First - Xbox Review

Culdcept the First (also attributed as Culdcept the First Saturn Tribute) is a very fun game, that does show its age. This is basically a re-issue of the 1997 Sega Saturn game that mashes together deckbuilding (think Magic: The Gathering) and boardgames (such as Monopoly).

  • Map Map - A Game About Maps - PC Review

Sometimes a game will hit your feed that is completely unexpected. That is the reaction I had when I discovered Map Map - A Game About Maps (which I'll refer to as Map Map from here on out). It is a puzzle exploration game where you take the role of a young cartographer setting out on a relaxing journey to many unknown islands.

Genshin Impact - Screenshot Gallery Part 2

Genshin Impact
by developer and publisher miHoYo—Sony PlayStation 4 spotlight article written by Nick with a free-to-play copy downloaded from the PSN.

This is the second of my two image shares from my adventures in Genshin Impact. There’s something about the visuals and music to Genshin Impact (I recently wrote a Memorable Music article about it as well) that appeals to me as I explore. Certainly some of the zones are more visually appealing to me than others. Mondstadt is largely green, with outcroppings of mountains and other terrains. It makes sense that this is the game’s initial area, as it sort of just fits with a typical fantasy landscape I think. The second nation you come into contact with is Liyue, and it is much browner and more mountainous. The landscape here is actually my least favorite of the regions. Admittedly, the largely brown and yellow backdrops do allow certain colors and structures to pop more, and the tall mountains do provide some really impressive views outward.

There is another region, called Dragonspine, that was introduced awhile ago. It’s probably the harshest of the zones as it introduced a new freezing mechanic where you need to find sources of heat periodically or you will suffer some damage over time. Like Liyue, it tends to be a bit more bland in its color scheme, though it’s perfectly suited to the snow-covered, mountainous theme of the area. Visually Inamuza has been my favorite region in the game. It has a lot of lush colors, with pink Sakura trees standing out against darker shades of blue and purple that dominate the colors here.

The visual differences and styles of each area just add to the sense of exploration and discovery (much of which is often walled behind puzzles as well, in a very Zelda-like way). There is also a sort of home / area builder called the Serenitea Pot that lets you theme the region and build things out the way you like. I’ve built out a region in each style, but mostly stick to the Inazuma style, which I have some screenshots of as well.

Most of my images come from one of two sources. There is a photo system baked in, that lets you do some posing with a character and manipulation of the camera angle to get some nice scenery shots. There is also a ‘Hangout’ subsystem that has your character learning more about other characters in the game. These mini-stories can end in a variety of ways, and those different endings offer you a chance to take a screenshot of the last scene in the story. I would like to see the former system given a bit more flexibility in the future.

It might be nice to add other characters to the scene, or even take action shots. Right now anything that happens in action is only caught by the system (using the screenshot capability of the system or automatically generating one if you earn a trophy, but it lacks some of the bells and whistles baked into the in-game camera system).

Having played through all of the available content so far in Genshin Impact, I’m looking forward to the next major content drop later this year. Hopefully I’ll have some new locations and characters to share with you then.

Genshin Impact by developer and publisher miHoYo—Sony PlayStation 4 spotlight article written by Nick with a free-to-play copy downloaded from the PSN.

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Gaming is about having fun. That fun for gamers comes in a variety of ways, depending on what they are looking for. Maybe it’s the thrill of beating a difficult boss in a Souls title, or coming up with the best kill / death ratio in a shooter, or feeling the emotions that come with the ending of a deep roleplaying game over dozens of hours of play.

Genshin Impact is one of those titles I find myself coming back to time and again – but one of my favorite aspects of this game? The exploration. I’ve written a review about it earlier last year if you want my more detailed thoughts about the game – but for me? It is a lot of fun. The game is free to play, but yeah – there’s plenty of opportunity to drop real money into it as well. This is most prevalent in the randomized draw of weapons and characters.

Genshin Impact Gallery 02
Click on the image to go to flickr or use the left and right arrows to scroll through

I’ve gone ahead and spent about $20 in total on it since its release, doing a handful of the month-long $5 daily rewards options. I never really feel pressured to spend money on Genshin Impact – and really, I seldom feel any real pressure to play either. I just pop in near-daily to collect any potential login items or to do a couple of quick tasks. If I’m in the mood to do more? I will. Some days, that turns into me playing eight or more hours straight. This tends to happen most for big events or a major new content drop.

That’s one of the things to know before you get into Genshin Impact. The world and the game itself are not complete. The game has been live for just over a year, and they’ve had numerous smaller events ranging from some week-long fetch quests to a more involved story about a lantern rite ritual. There have been entire new regions added, each with its own quirks and new gameplay wrinkles, often introducing a new primary element along the way (Inazuma is the latest of these, an electricity / lightning themed zone that came out midway through last year).

This will be the first of two articles just showing some of my explorations over the first year and change of playing Genshin Impact. Images come from all over the map, with a variety of the characters I have collected. Some characters show up more than others, as I certainly have a preferred five or six that get regular run out of me. Hopefully you enjoy this peek into the world that I’ve been steadily exploring.

Star Citizen #ScreenshotSaturday

Star Citizen by Cloud Imperium Games—screenshot gallery by Robert.

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes.

For the uninitiated, Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen is the monolithic immersive sim borne from the mind of actor, director, and game developer, Chris Roberts. On a quest to build “the best damn space sim,” Roberts launched a wildly successful crowd-funding campaign way back in 2012- in the years since the project was first announced, we’ve seen the addition of three different modes of play, the space dogfighting mode Arena Commander, the FPS PVP arena Star Marine, and the icing on the cake- the Persistent Universe.

As it’s long-winded development continues to release morsel of content every quarter, the good folks at CIG have begun implementing in-game events; from the massively popular, military-focused Invictus Launch Week to the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo that sees one of Star Citizen’s many landing zones taken over by ship manufacturers in a process not all that dissimilar than our own real life Detroit Auto Show. Other events may celebrate specific professions, such as mining or cargo hauling, or even week-long events celebrating “First Contact Day,” or “Alien Week” as it’s referred to. Which brings us to today’s article…

With Star Citizen’s 2951 Alien Week celebration in full swing, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of our very own resident Space Marshall T1ckles’ stunning virtual photography. With the built-in advanced camera controls, T1ckles has been hard at work documenting his adventures in the Persistent Universe and today we’re here to showcase some of that work- note that these are all raw images and haven’t been touched up- what you see is what the game actually looks like (assuming you have the computer to run this beastly title).

Atelier Shallie: Alchemist of the Dusk Sea - Early screenshots of the next in this popular JRPG series

The Atelier series may not have the history that Final Fantasy does, but for many JRPG fans it is still one of the most popular examples of the genre. The art style has always been appealing and it has only gotten better over the last few releases.

Mario Kart 8 - Screenshots and preview

Mario Kart will forever be a favorite series of mine. I first spent lots of time with the series back on Mario Kart 64, when that title along with other classics such as Madden and GoldenEye took over college living rooms on a regular basis. Many a good time was had when someone used a lightning bolt (and the person triggering it shouted "Be Small!" to the rest of the room, inevitably eliciting a series of groans from anyone unfortunate enough not to be invincible due to a star at the time) and shortcuts were tried (and often failed).

Magic 2014 - Duels of the Planeswalkers - lots of announcements

I am a huge Magic fan. I play it every night with coworkers, my son and I have decks we play at home and I have purchased every release of Duels of the Planeswalkers, having tried it on PC, iPad, PS3 and 360. You could safely say I am familiar with the content.

Well now information has been  released on both the video game as well as the actual card game. Here goes (press release copied below):

Magic 2014 - Duels of the Planeswalkers
In addition to Xbox LIVE® Arcade, Steam®, PlayStation® Network and iPad®, Magic 2014 - Duels of the Planeswalkers will be available on Android™ tablet for the first time ever! With an easy-to-use tutorial, Magic 2014 is the best way for new players to learn how to play Magic, while also providing advanced game play modes and options to satisfy experienced players.
Magic 2014 builds on the success of previous games in the Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers franchise and adds several new features:
-       Available for the first time on Android tablet
-       Sealed Play which allows players to open booster packs and build decks to play against the AI and other players
-       Engaging storyline that gives players the opportunity to join the Planeswalker Chandra Nalaar in a quest for revenge through challenging gameplay
-       New take on the popular Slivers creature type
-       10 Brand New Decks
-       15 New Encounters
-       10 New Puzzle Challenges
-       Platform-specific promotions that will include 6-card Booster Decks featuring the following promo cards:
o    Steam, iPad, Android tablet – Scavenging Ooze
o    Xbox – Bonescythe Sliver
o    PSN – Ogre Battledriver
-       Special Edition Release including the base game and exciting mix of additional content (Steam only)
-       Loyalty Offer for players who previously purchased Magic 2013 (Steam and Xbox only)
In addition, integration between Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkers and the Magic 2014 - Core Set will provide Magic 2014 players with a first look at more than 50 cards from the Magic 2014 – Core Set releasing later this summer.  Five cards from Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkers will also be appearing as foil face cards in the Magic 2014 Intro Packs including Liliana’s Reaver, Garruk’s Horde, Chandra’s Phoenix, Jace’s Mindseeker, and Ajani’s Chosen.

The addition of Sealed Play will allow players to open booster packs and build decks to play against the AI and other players. Each sealed pool is comprised of 84 cards, mimicking paper TCG booster packs. The PvE experience includes a six-deck ladder where players take on mono-colored Sealed decks each corresponding with a particular Planeswalker, and finally facing a ‘boss’ Sealed deck.
Another feature debuting in Magic 2014 is a new take on the popular Slivers creature type. A fan-favorite, new playable Slivers in Magic 2014 decks will include the following:
− Sliver Construct
− Predatory Sliver
− Groundshaker Sliver
− Megantic Sliver
− Blur Sliver
− Striking Sliver
− Thorncaster Sliver
− Battle Sliver
− Sentinel Sliver
− Bonescythe Sliver
In addition, Hive Stirrings, a sorcery that creates Sliver tokens, will also be included in Magic 2014.

And for fans of the card game itself:

Magic 2014 - Core Set
The Magic 2014 - Core Set will provide players with a wider Magic experience including new cards, face-to-face gameplay and unlimited deck building opportunities. The Magic 2014 - Core Set is an exciting blend of brand new cards and returning fan-favorites, and will be available at participating Wizards Play Network (WPN) hobby game stores worldwide this summer. To find a WPN location near you, visit: Wizards.com/locator.

The Magic 2014 - Core Set will feature:
-       249 Cards
-       Planeswalkers – Ajani, Jace, Liliana, Chandra, Garruk
-       Slivers creature types
-       In-store events throughout the summer including Pre-release, Friday Night Magic and Game Day

Lots to look forward to for Magic fans. Are you looking forward to the new card sets and video game? Personally I think the sealed deck style of game sounds very cool, and I remember the Slivers from back around the Tempest releases (they played off of one another as well as any 'type' of card in the Magic series in my opinion) very fondly.

Some new Madden 13 Screenshots

I'm a huge NFL fan and almost always look forward to the release of the next Madden game.  Say what you will about the series never updating or doing anything new, but I have wound up getting it almost every year and I am planning to continue that trend again this year.

Epic Mickey 2, Mass Effect 3, Frozen Synapse, MTG, Dead Space 3... it's screenshot time!

Everyone likes pictures. Video games are very visual (hence 'video' games) - well, there's several games I saw some screenshots of yesterday that I thought I'd share this morning.

I have a review for Frozen synapse coming soon - it was a title that surprised me, but that I enjoyed quite a bit.  Mode 7 Games has announced that they have a Red expansion coming, and here's a couple of those images.

The Elder Scrolls Online - Gaming Thoughts...

I admit that sometimes I am amazed at how angry or worried gamers can get about release announcements.  The excitement I have come to expect, but the apprehension still surprises me at times.  Not that it should - games as media are far more interactive than music, movies or books.  As a result, our level of investment increases as well.  It is a major part of why we play these games - because we become immersed and feel we have a stake in the outcome.

Nightfall for the iOS

I haven't heard much about Playdek's Nightfall game until just recently, but the idea appeals to me as a big fan off collectible card games.  I got my start with real ones like Magic: The Gathering, Legend of the Five Rings and Marvel: Overpower but have enjoyed many of the video game iterations as well.
