Sandbox RPG Dustgrave Shows Its Changing World And Its Stealth Mechanics!

The game will have a playable demo at the Steam Next Fest set for February, 2024

Publisher Digital Tribe and indie studio Innervoid Interactive announce that their sandbox RPG Dustgrave will have a playable demo on the Steam Next Fest, that will run from February 5-12. The game, that will be released on Steam in 2024, has recently published two new dev diaries in which players can get a grasp of how the world changes due to the players actions as well as have a sneak peek at its stealth system.

The world of Dustgrave will change over time depending on both the actions of the player and the factions that populate it. Settlements and locations are dynamic entities. This means they can be conquered by different factions, see their populations decimated, get destroyed and rebuilt or even infested with zombies. All in all, that ruined settlement you stumble upon at the beginning of the game may, one day, be a rebuilt city where you will have to protect its settlers while doing some construction work. You can read the dev diary here.

Players will always have an option to activate stealth mode to try to sneak their way out of difficult situations. In a game where all NPCs remember what you did to them, it’s fundamental to have the possibility of acting from the shadows to avoid negative consequences. NPCs will be able to notice the player via a cone of view and hearing sounds, but they will also have memory. Don't you dare trying to sell them goods you just stole from them, or they'll notice quickly. Of course, there's also an option to engage in combat while in stealth mode, useful for those that don't want anybody to notice that their character just killed a bunch of people. You can read the dev diary here.

ABOUT THE GAME

The crumbling of the Dahlan Empire brought times of struggle, times of war, hunger and plague – but also of opportunity for those strong and brave enough to carve their own path with sword and wits. You can be one of these adventurers and mercenaries who venture into this trouble land and leave a mark – as a criminal or a hero; a wise scholar or a hard worker; a holy man or just a mercenary: the choice is yours!

Dustgrave offers players total freedom in a true sandbox RPG experience, with eye-catching cell-shaded watercolor art and a deep turn-based combat system. You play as a band of adventurers in the ravaged lands of the former Dahlan Empire: you can create and customize your characters with an advanced character editor, and then choose your own way without limits. The world will react accordingly to your deeds and decisions: an advanced record & relationship system that tracks every event in the world, and then every NPC reacts to what they know about you depending on their morality and current allegiances.

Dustgrave features a deep turn-based combat system that allows you many different combinations of skills and items, offering players endless options of great tactical depth. But you will also have an advanced stealth system in your hands, which allows you to approach problems using your wits rather than your steel: you can break into secure places to find clues, steal treasures, or assassinate your mark without leaving a trace.

KEY FEATURES

  • Everything meaningful happening in the world is recorded. NPCs will judge your good and bad deeds based on their personality or faction
  • The world is in constant evolution. Factions will constantly fight against each other: some may acquire more power, others may be destroyed forever.
  • All NPCs have unique personalities and desires, and their daily life is thoroughly simulated
  • True fantasy sandbox RPG experience. You decide with your actions what kind of character you want to be: a holy man, a thief, a hero, a soldier, a mercenary, an archeologist, even just a mail deliverer…
  • Smash your enemies with an advanced yet accessible turn-based combat system, combining Skills and Items in huge tactical depth
  • Use an advanced stealth system to do anything you want! Stealing? Check! Assassinating? Check! Breaking and entering? Check!
  • Create your own customized characters with an advanced character editor

Sunday Bites - Celestian Tales: Realms Beyond

A few years ago now I had the chance to review Celestian Tales: Old North which was an interesting and well designed RPG by Ekuator Games. Having gone to Kickstarter in order to fund a sequel, I took the time to test out this next entry of the series through the demo that can be found through its Steam Page.

Story

While you may not particularly have to play the original it may be a good idea since the original cast of the Old North are back for Realms Beyond. If you follow along with the dialog it’s been about a decade since the original and seeing that the six nobles are still together is something interesting as things have changed but they’ve stuck together. Starting off on a quest in order to obtain fairy dust for a garment, some decisions will need to be made on that trek in which not everyone will agree with. I’m glad that they kept the options for choice as well as that not everyone will always agree with one another.

Gameplay

The gameplay will make fans of the classic RPG feel right at home with characters moving around the map and getting into battle with the shadows that can be seen on the map. What’s in those shadows? Running into them is the only way to find out! Aside from that, the top down view provides both a nice view of the terrain while also easily hiding objects and people that you may need to find in order to advance the story.

Music and Sound Effects

The music and the sound effects are great. Exploring the forest for example has a light track while combat steps up the tempo to keep things exciting. The sound effects fit right in and don’t feel out of place or annoying to hear as you switch between the menus and options in combat.

Other

Controller support makes a return with the sequel making it rather easy to put your feet up and not having to worry about being close to the screen. Other than that, load times are quick and things already seem quite stable. If anything the most I would highlight is that I felt quite nostalgic returning to several areas of the first. Having been over two years it really was like re-welcoming an old friend.

Combat

The combat system from the first makes a return with a familiar turned-based RPG system. Characters have their turns in order of fastest to slowest and can either attack enemies, use skills on a stamina based system or use items in order to heal themselves. The leveling system is also back with the party itself receiving experience and not the particular members. This means that even if there’s a party split, your party’s level will be the one that matters meaning that no one if left behind. Also the entire party is fully healed after every battle which is great!

Final Thoughts

Having enjoyed the first title left a bar to be achieved with the second and I believe Realms Beyond could easily hit it. The only thing that will really be left to see if that if it can pass its predecessor. A lot of the elements are being re-used like the combat and some of the locations shown but it’s what will be done with these later on that can set it apart from Old North. In either case, I’m looking forward to its full release later this year!

Stairs - PC Review

Stairs does an excellent job of setting the stage and creating an atmospheric first-person action/adventure game that relies on smart use of tension and does not fall back on cheap jump scares all of the time. The end result is an interesting narrative with some good puzzle mechanics that remind us that it is in fact horror season.

Almightree: The Last Dreamer - PC Review

Almightree: The Last Dreamer is a good example of how well a mobile based title can perform when being ported to something like a PC. Using either a keyboard or a controller, fast thinking is going to be required in this puzzle platformer as there is no time to sit around smelling the flowers with the entire whole world literally crumbling around you.

Celestian Tales: Old North - PC Review

Kickstarters have been all the rage of late for the funding of projects that would most likely never see the light of day without them. Celestian Tales: Old North is one such title from Ekuator Games that is a throwback to an older RPG era of gaming. With beautiful hand drawn designs, players choose one of six Nobles to control as they make it through Squire Training in order to better serve their realm.
