Mass Effect Legendary Edition with Elysian Space Dust IPA – Beeps and Beers

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. Space Dust IPA is made by Elysian Brewing Company. Article by Nick.

Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes

I’ll begin this by pointing out the obvious to anyone who is familiar with the Mass Effect games: clearly this one beer did not come anywhere close to being the only one I drank during my time with this game. Why? Because it’s actually a collection of three games that each can take about forty hours to play through. I started to replay these back on Game Pass some months ago, and have been thoroughly enjoying my time with the trilogy again as I near the conclusion of the third game.

So, with a trio of games that have been getting played for months, I found myself trying to figure out which beer I wanted to associated with these games, and rather quickly settled on the Elysia Space Dust IPA for obvious thematic reasons. Simply put ‘space dust’ is a fun tie-in to a science fiction game set out in space. That being said? It’s also a damn tasty IPA that I had the fortune of drinking very recently.

Odds are if you’re a gamer, you’ve at least heard something about the Mass Effect games, both good and bad. The first game’s combination of action / shooter gameplay mixed with meaningful choices throughout the story thrilled fans. Mass Effect 2 was a critical and commercial success that ranks atop many ‘all time’ lists from that era. Mass Effect 3 brought the story to a head and combined it with the best visuals and action gameplay yet, but a conclusion that certainly raised controversy. Oh, and Andromeda was pretty meh, and I am not touching that spin-off title again any time soon.

Hard to believe that the first Mass Effect game came out over fifteen years ago now. It was a title I had a bit of trouble getting into originally (more on that in a future article). Conversely firing it up in the Legendary Edition, it fit like an old glove. Given how long ago I played it, I was surprised at how much I still remembered about the game. Not just the major plot points, but many of the smaller details along the way as well. It was comfortable and familiar. Along the way you make numerous choices that impact how the story plays out, and both those small nods and larger plot points serve the series well as it feels like it is your story.

I’ve had Elysian’s Space Dust IPA in the past several times. I think the first time was several years ago now. It’s not one I get my hands on regularly. IPAs aren’t my go-to year-round, but I certainly enjoy a good one. I wouldn’t say it is a great one – but better than average. To my nose it's sort of floral sweet scent that leads into the first sip. It’s an interesting IPA that has some citrus sweetness right off the back, but that piney, hoppy bitterness shows up on the backend and lingers on the back of the tongue. It’s not a hazy / New England IPA, but there’s a hint of haziness to the initial pour. It’s worth noting that at 8.2% ABV, it’s a little stronger than the average IPA, but not quite up there with a double IPA either. There is a bit of complexity where the malts come through as it warms a bit, but I still prefer this one cold. In general, I prefer my IPAs colder than not, unlike some of the heavier stouts and porters that I sip on as I allow them to draw closer to room temperatures.

I specifically had this beer while working through Mass Effect 2. In particular while I was on the Citadel. Fans of the game no doubt are familiar with the options that your protagonist (Shepard) can leverage to get discounts at shops if he does an advertisement with them. My brain couldn’t shake the idea of him walking around going: I’m Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite beer on the Citadel!

If you know, you know.

One of the really interesting things about playing these games through the Legendary Edition was the DLC. Because I was somewhat late to the game with the original Mass Effect, the DLC was already out. I picked it up and experienced it. Of note: the Pinnacle Station DLC from the first Mass Effect is not included in the Legendary Edition, because the source code was written by another developer who said it was now corrupted. That was not the case with Mass Effect 2 and 3. I played both games immediately upon release, and I never picked up and played the DLC that came later. As such, there were characters, missions and story elements that I missed out on the first time around. This of course includes the updated endings for Mass Effect 3, which just adds greater sense of completion and closure than the as-released ending had.

I mentioned above how one of the key elements to this series was how decisions I made along the way. Many of them quite difficult with no 'right answer' but more of a 'making the best of a bad situation' feel to them. There was a feeling that the choices Shepard made throughout the game really didn't have enough of an impact on the ending. I can see that perspective, I don't necessarily agree with it. I think in the end the writers for the series had a story to tell. They began it and ended it (with some variation in the end sequence based on a final choice made) the way they wanted, and allowed us as players a bit of room to color within those lines along the way.

My only real grumble about this collection is the lack of multiplayer mode. It was a pretty big part of Mass Effect 3, and it was a survive multiple waves spin-off. I enjoyed the snot out of that mode back in the day. I played it almost every weekend for months. They regularly had weekend events that I kept track of and participated in as I tried to get the most out of the game's rewards. I get that not supporting an online mode likely made this rerelease faster and cheaper for EA, but I was still somewhat bummed by its omission.

The Legendary Edition of these games saw several improvements to visuals, gameplay mechanics, the aforementioned DLC – so it really is a fantastic collection of titles that will span many hours if you play them through from start to finish. While I had several other beers along the way, I felt like Space Dust IPA was probably the most thematically aligned, if not the best of the bunch I had along the way. It’s a good beer, but hardly one of the most memorable I’ve had to date. Conversely the Mass Effect trilogy is among my favorite video game series ever.

Score dropping time.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: 9/10

Space Dust IPA: 7/10

Week in Review - April 10th to 14th

Welcome back to the weekend and this Week's in Review!

We started monday off with We are the Dwarves. It has the potential with some edits to become even better or at a worst case make a stellar sequel. I'm hopeful!

"We are the Dwarves is the perfect example of a game that has all the elements to be something amazing but sadly falls short of that goal and not for a lack of trying. Unfortunately there were some of the elements that simply didn't work together but on their own with a different approach would have worked splendidly."
- PY

Tuesday saw something that we really don't see often around CGR. A Perfect, yes capital P, Perfect score. Needless to say that Nick loved his time with Persona 5.

" Jed: 'I love this game as much as Morgana loves cuddling up against treasure' "
- From Nick's Review

Wednesday saw a lower key release but in no way was it any less than the previous day. A Rose in the Twilight is a stellar experience and anyone with a Vita, or if you don't have one a PC, should pick this up if they love both Puzzles and works of art.

"This is not really something to be played outside in the middle of a sunny day but more for rainy days or as the day turns to night in order to truly appreciate how all the elements come together. It really is a work of art."
- PY

Thursday Nick broke out his VR headset with Tethered. It really sounds like something that those with VR headsets should check out.

"There are a few quibbles that hold this strategy game back from greatness, but for virtual reality fans, the good news is: this is an honest to goodness game, and it is a lot of fun as well."
- Nick

Yesterday, the start of the long weekend, the end of the week, the magical Friday saw our review on the latest entry into the Mass Effect series with Andromeda. With the love / hate relationship that this game has going for it, check out what Nick had to say!

"... despite its flaws, there is a perfectly solid, enjoyable game here. It might not live up to its namesake completely, but the foundation is here for better things from Bioware in future Mass Effect offerings"
- Nick

Finally! don't forget to check out our contest for your own copy of War for the Overworld!

Mass Effect Andromeda - PS4 Review

On the surface, it felt like the stars were aligned to make Mass Effect Andromeda one of my most anticipated games in a very long time. I absolutely love the original trilogy, and the idea that this was going to be a "Dragon Age Inquisition" in space captured my imagination. The problem is, the execution feels rushed, and in the end what I had hoped would be a spectacular game simply has to settle for being a pretty good one.

Mass Effect: Andromeda New Briefing Video, Game Awards Gameplay Trailer

Seeing as Mass Effect might have been my favorite series of games last generation, we can safely assume that the upcoming Andromeda is one of my most anticipated titles of 2017.

Neverwinter Nights - Retro Reflections

Neverwinter Nights is not a game you will show your friends to impress them. It’s old and its graphics look very poor compared to those of modern productions. However, it is a fine choice if you want to be immersed in a world where strange creatures, mystical forests and long forgotten treasures await the intrepid adventurer.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - PS4 Review

Interestingly my game of the year landed just before the end of the year. Talk about going out on a high note. There have been a number of really good RPG games over the last couple of years, but Dragon Age: Inquisition with its massive world, interesting story that grows better over time and plentiful choices that feel impactful make this a game that is easy to lose hundreds of hours in. I realized that about seventy hours in I had only done about half of what Dragon Age: Inquisition had to offer - and I was already wondering how events might play out differently if I had been using a different character who made vastly different choices.

The Hero of Thedas - Dragon Age: Inquisition trailer

We are huge fans of Bioware in general and Dragon Age in particular. There are a few members of the team here who consider Dragon Age: Inquisition as one of their most anticipated titles of 2014 and this latest trailer serves as a nice teaser until then.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Sign me up, please!

I am a huuuuge fan of Dragon Age. I just want to establish that right now - but Dragon Age and Mass Effect were both Bioware series that sit among my favorite titles of this console generation. So it was with a good deal of excitement when I viewed the Dragon Age: Inquisition trailer yesterday.

Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition - Review Revisited

I am a bit fan of the Dragon Age series and reviewed several of the titles from before such as Origins, Awakening, Dragon Age 2 and even the Facebook game Dragon Age Legends.  Generally speaking I have enjoyed every game in the series for different reasons and to varying extents, but the original Dragon Age: Origins was the introduction point for the series and a game I enjoyed greatly.

Updated: N7 Day - Bioware celebrates Mass Effect with its fans

I'm definitely curious about this one.  Not a lot of details have been released yet, but Bioware is having an N7 Day - tomorrow on November 7th, to celebrate the fifth year anniversary of the Mass Effect series.

Magic: The Gathering, Pure Chess, Mass Effect 3... yup, it was the weekend

Good morning - I sure hope you all had a really nice weekend.  Mine was fairly uneventful - which is not a bad thing at all.  My wife and daughters were out of town since Thursday, leaving my son and I to sit around and kill time how we saw fit.  Generally speaking, that was video games.

One game he and I have both been playing a bit is Pure Chess.

Some Mass Effect 3 items

I am a big fan of Mass Effect 3, all the controversies aside.  I am hoping to dust off Mass Effect 2 again soon, and build up a new character to put through 3 for another, different take on the storyline in the somewhat near future and still play the multiplayer component every other weekend when Bioware has their bonus weekends.  There have been several hints at a single player DLC coming soon that may be called Leviathan, in reference to a potentially rogue Reaper.  In the meantime, below are some confirmed goodies.

Worth the wait? Mass Effect 3 - Extended Cut DLC

I have given a lot of coverage to Mass Effect 3 at this site so far, including a review where I gave the game high marks despite the controversial ending.  While I did not mind the ending, it was quickly made clear that a lot of other fans felt that it was a complete disservice.  I never fell in-line with that thinking, but I did feel like the ending was lacking in impact from your decisions and it felt a bit undercooked.  Shortly after the public backlash over the ending to Mass Effect 3, Bioware promised an Extended Cut DLC that would not fundamentally change the ending, but add context to what was already out there.  So how did it fare?  Warning - spoilers ahead!

Epic Mickey 2, Mass Effect 3, Frozen Synapse, MTG, Dead Space 3... it's screenshot time!

Everyone likes pictures. Video games are very visual (hence 'video' games) - well, there's several games I saw some screenshots of yesterday that I thought I'd share this morning.

I have a review for Frozen synapse coming soon - it was a title that surprised me, but that I enjoyed quite a bit.  Mode 7 Games has announced that they have a Red expansion coming, and here's a couple of those images.

Gaming Thoughts... A couple of last Mass Effect 3 tidbits

I'm planning to post my Mass Effect 3 full review tomorrow.  It's lengthy, but I hope you enjoy it.

Moving on - I find that the number of EA crossovers over the last few years sort of odd, but generally I have liked them.  Bonuses for playing Dragon Age on Facebook that show up in Dragon Age II?  That works.  The odd Dead Space armor swaps?  Odd, but it generally looks cool.  Tying in Blood Dragon Armor from Dragon Age into Mass Effect?  Sure, why not - that was my primary armor used in ME 3 truth be told.  They're all under the EA wheelhouse though, so I found the Mass Effect 3 armor showing up in Final Fantasy XIII-2 a bit odd.  I don't plan to pick it up, but maybe others will?  It seems like Square Enix has Final Fantasy XIII characters crossing over quite a bit more as they explore the DLC world.  I saw a rather odd article on IGN yesterday about them modeling Prada clothing too.

Mass Effect Infiltrator - iPad Review

Just as Mass Effect Galaxy tried to tell a non-Shepard story wedged between the primary console releases of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, Electronic Arts brings us Mass Effect Infiltrator just before the Mass Effect 3 release.

As I noted in my earlier review, I was not very happy with Mass Effect Galaxy.  It was a major departure from the series both in form and function.  With this in mind, I went into Mass Effect Infiltrator hopeful, but wary.  It turns out that both of those feelings had merit to them.

Mass Effect 2 - Xbox 360 Review

In one of my last posts I was singing the praises of Mass Effect.  Even though that game is a few years old now, I feel as though it holds up quite well by today's standards still.  Well, about two years ago now, Mass Effect 2 came out, and while I had trouble getting into the first game, I had no such difficulty with the second title in this series.

Mass Effect 2 still fully embraces its RPG roots, and Bioware does an excellent job of still giving your character a sense of empowerment as your decisions help to shape the way the story unfolds.  If you have saves from the first Mass Effect game, you can import them into the sequel and your decisions from that game impact what happens here, which is a feature I cannot say enough good things about.  While the first title only has a couple of pieces of so-so DLC, Mass Effect 2 has quite a bit more and while it varies in quality from 'okay' to 'excellent', I find that it all helps add to the overall storyline, which I have become quite invested in by now.

There are some key differences between the first Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.  Most of them come down to pacing.  While Bioware tried to update Dragon Age so its sequel was more action oriented, the results were considered streamlined and largely unsuccessful.  Here Mass Effect 2 benefits from a tighter focus on combat and menu navigation, and I think the sequel benefits mightily from it.

Mass Effect 3 - bonus experience this weekend!

One of my favorite parts about Mass Effect 3 has been the multiplayer.  I am really digging it, and have already gotten around level 15 with all of the available classes.  Yes.  I plan to hit the level 20 cap with all of them.  And now this weekend, Bioware has helped me get that much closer to my goal.

Mass Effect - Xbox 360 Review

I remember hearing a bit about Mass Effect prior to its release, but it was not a title I was terribly excited about.  My only real experience with Bioware at that time had come in the form of Neverwinter Nights, which I had thoroughly enjoyed - but it was quite clear that this science fiction title was going to be a completely different animal.

Finally for Easter after it released, I picked Mass Effect up used because of the overwhelmingly glowing reviews it had released to.  I gave it a shot, did not much care for the shooting mechanics and put the game away in favor of other titles I was working on at the time like Oblivion.

Some months later, I had beaten every game in my current library except one.  I decided to dust off Mass Effect and give it an earnest chance this time.  I made my way through the first few hours, fighting off the confusion over the strange blending of shooter and RPG as I became more comfortable with the mechanics and the game's universe.  Fast-forward about 50 hours and I had just beaten the game, and found myself wondering how things might have ended differently if I had made some different choices at key moments.  I then proceeded to find out as I immediately played through it again.  I would go on to beat the first Mass Effect two more times over the following few years as it became one of my favorite video game titles of all time.
