There is No Escape from the Cold in 'Permafrost'

Oberhaching, Germany, June 6, 2026 | There is no escape from the cold. In the aftermath of a cataclysmic event known only as “The Shattering”, the whole Earth has been swallowed by ice, snow and constant sub-zero temperatures. What remains of humanity clings to survival. Challenge the overwhelming odds and prove that you have the skills and the resolve not only to survive in these unforgiving conditions, but to bring the splintered factions of society back together again. It is time to show your resilience and overcome the Permafrost. How long will you last?

Your chance to face the white hell in this sub-zero story-based survival sandbox is almost here. Development studio SpaceRocket Games and German publisher Toplitz Productions unveiled a new trailer for Permafrost at this year’s Summer Game Fest Green Games Showcase, which is focusing on games that reconnect us with nature, spark hope for the future and remind us what’s worth protecting.

Not only does the fresh video impress with new gameplay footage, but it also announces August 21, 2026 as the Early Access release date on PC for the highly anticipated survival game, whose demo gathered more than 300,000 downloads during its run at Steam Next Fest.

Players ready to become the protagonist Rook, a tech-savvy engineer able to build and craft tools from scraps, don’t have to wait that long, though. They can start looking for their long-lost friend Icarus and try to overcome the frozen wastelands, predatory wildlife and hostile factions vying for supremacy in the upcoming playtest. The date for the playtest will be announced soon, but interested players can head over to the official Steam product page already to register. With a bit of luck they will not only be able to enter the frozen landscape before the official release date, but also help the development team with their invaluable feedback. And don’t forget to tell your friends, because you can brave the cold not only solo just with your trusted dog at your side, but also in co-operative multiplayer for up to 4 survivors.

About the game

Permafrost is a story-driven survival sandbox set in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world. Discover a vast lore-rich open world, alone or in co-op with up to 4 players. Explore, scavenge, craft, and build a network of shelters to outlast the cold.
  • The Cold is your true enemy!
    • The cold is alive and ever-present. Frostbite, storms, and creeping chill shape every journey, turning preparation, shelter, and timing into matters of survival.
  • A frozen open world to explore!
    • Traverse a frozen open world where city ruins fade into wilderness. A tense, grounded survival experience shaped by silence and scarcity - no constant gunfire, no fantasy tropes. Just winter, isolation, and resolve.
  • Exploration-Gated progression!
    • Progress is earned through exploration and adaptation. Restore abandoned shelters, repair broken machines, and reclaim fragile technology to push deeper into the frozen world.
  • Your Dog as your loyal companion!
    • Your loyal dog companion stands with you when the cold turns everything else silent. Rescued from the ruins, your dog scouts ahead, warns of danger, carries supplies, and keeps you grounded when the silence gets to be too much.
  • Symbiotic 1-4 player Co-Op Survival!
    • The cold doesn't care how many of you there are. Play solo or survive alongside up to 3 friends, building shelter networks, dividing responsibilities, and playing to each other's strengths. Co-op doesn't simplify the world; it just means you don't face the cold alone.

Permafrost will be available on PC in Early Access on Steam, GOG.com and EGS on August 21, 2026. More information can be found on the store pages. Join our official Discord server to get the latest news about Permafrost as well as the other exciting titles from Toplitz Productions.

One Man's Trash - PC Review

One Man's Trash by developer and publisher Jony Pazu GamesPC(Steam) review written by Richard with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure, sometimes quite literally. In One Man’s Trash you will turn other people’s junk into cash while digging down a big trash pit. Weirdly addicting and a little cathartic, will you be cleaning out the junk, or will you fall victim to the abyss of trash?

In One Man’s Trash you play as a miner who has spent the last of his savings to purchase a junkyard where someone accidentally threw out a hard drive with 8,000 PitCoins on it. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it’s based on a Bit Coin story that actually happened. Our miner however has a superpowered vacuum that can hoover up both dirt and objects.

One Man’s Trash is pretty basic in how it plays: suck up dirt and objects, fill up the vacuum, return to your computer to sell what you’ve got. You can purchase upgrades or gamble with your cash, and then back into the pit you go. Rinse and repeat until you manage to find the wallet with the Pit Coins in it! Don’t neglect your upgrades though, as they can be really helpful.

You can upgrade your vacuum capacity, range, width, suction power, and item capacity (different than dirt capacity) to increase your vacuum capabilities, but you can also buy rope that you can ascend/descend from, lights to place around the pit when it starts getting too dark to see, and a scanner to tell you if there are any items nearby. Make sure to suck up all the garbage bags, toilets, or electric guitars you find in order to bring in more cash for the upgrades!

As you progress down the pit, there will be different layers which requires more powerful vacuum to breach through. Normally this is locked behind shop level, which can be increased by purchasing a certain amount of upgrades worth of cash, and then shelling out to upgrade the store, unlocking further upgrades. Also as you progress down more and more layers, the value of the items you can find and the dirt you suck up increases. There’s a big difference between deep layer ores and the garbage bags on the surface.

Something to note is that you can actually die. If you fall too far you take damage, and if you die you lose everything in your vacuum and get returned to the surface. Not too troubling, but could be annoying. I suppose you could probably soft lock the game as well, but it would require so much effort that it’s pretty much on you if that happens. If you don’t have access to the rope, whether you’re playing in a game mode that doesn’t have it or you didn’t purchase any, and you get stuck in a hole? But you can also expel the dirt in your vacuum to create footholds, so you would essentially need to engineer the situation. Also, you could always just continue using your vacuum on nothing, as it will overheat and kill you eventually.

The game does not take long on normal mode to finish, as I clocked in just under four hours after I was done, and that’s after exploring around trying to unearth some of the interesting and mysterious objects you can find buried in the pit. There is the option for both an easier mode and a normal mode, as well as a harder Abyss mode where there is no rope.

There’s a little radio next to the computer you sell/purchase/gamble from that will play tunes for you while you are playing, which you can turn off if you want to listen to something else. Honestly, the point here isn’t the soundtrack, or the graphics for that matter, but a sort of easy-going game about cleaning out a huge pit and stuffing your pockets with cash.

The good news is that there’s a low price point for the game, and currently three game modes to choose from. It seems like the developer is really looking to improve, so by the time you read this there may be even more content to One Man’s Trash. For a solo developer project, I think the game is quite well done.

Overall, I have to say that One Man’s Trash is quite enjoyable. While not visually or audially outstanding, it has a draw to it’s simpleness. A fairly relaxing delve into a junk pit in the name of money, if you’re looking for a title to unwind a little, maybe think about picking this up

Space Engineers 2 - PC Preview

Space Engineers 2 by developer and publisher KeenSoftware HousePC (Steam)  preview written by Hayden T. with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 8 minutes

Keen Software House (Keen) has recently launched Space Engineers 2 (SE2) into early access with a polished communication campaign featuring YouTube influencer previews, snappy teasers and a road map using the ‘vertical slice’ concept to show the intended path between initial early access availability and final release. As with any early access title, and especially with a sequel, potential players need to answer a few key questions:

  • Is this game likely to make it to release, or at least a playable state?
  • What state is it in right now at early-access launch?
  • As a sequel, will it break enough new ground to make it worth buying?
  • What can I expect from it as it finishes development?

Is Space Engineers 2 likely to make it to release, or at least a playable state?

The ever-hopeful optimist in me always wants to simply answer ‘yes’ to this question and move on, but this is a question that deserves a serious response. Keen is not a new entrant in the field, and has been operating since 2010.  Space Engineers 2 will be the fourth title the company has produced, and the studio that started with ten people now employs well over 50 staff spread across every continent except the Antarctic.  Accordingly, lets take a look at Keen’s release history and the timeline that products have taken:

Miner Wars (Miner Wars 2081 / Miner Wars Arena)

Engine: VRAGE

Available pre-alpha October 2010

Steam Greenlight approval October 2012

Full Release November 2012

Always-online requirement for singleplayer removed January 2013

Source code released publicly for modding March 2013. (Asset rights and ownership retained by Keen Software house).

Reception: mixed reviews, 3/10 to 77%.

First access to release: 2 years

 Space Engineers

          Engine: VRAGE 2

Steam Early Access (Alpha) October 2013

Steam Early Access (Beta) December 2016

          Full Release February 2019

Continued DLC development and free patches through the present (2025)

First access to release: 5.5 years

 Medieval Engineers

          Engine: VRAGE 2

          Steam Early Access February 2015

Development team moved to Space Engineers in February 2019 (end of regular updates) at version 0.7.1

Full Release March 2020 (version 0.7.2)

Community patch 0.7.3 officially distributed April 2022.  Community development work continues.

First access to release: 4 years

 Space Engineers 2

          Engine: VRAGE 3

          Steam Early Access January 2025

Based on their history then, the answer to whether or not Space Engineers 2 will reach a full release is undoubtedly ‘yes’, as is the case with every product before it. While many in its community were unhappy at the state in which Medieval Engineers was released in 2020, it did get a release. The developer resources from that team that were folded into the Space Engineers group have helped drive that game onward through continued patches, optimizations, improvements and DLC releases for the past five years. Even if one chooses to focus on Medieval Engineers as a weak link in Keen’s development history, the game reached a sufficiently playable state that it developed a community willing to take on continued development by itself and were given the tools by Keen to do so. The chances of Space Engineers 2 becoming abandoned before a playable release therefore seem to be small.

What Space Engineers 1 looked like at its 2013 early access release.

What state is it in right now at early-access launch?

As of the start of March 2025, Space Engineers 2 is currently in ‘Vertical Slice 1.0’ and has received a number of updates since its January 27, 2025 initial public early access date. The game is functional as a single player creative sandbox building game, and allows for character and vehicle movement and collisions. Performance on the new VRAGE 3 engine is remarkably smooth for such an apparently early-development game, and at least to me the feel of movement and interaction is noticeably crisper and more responsive than that felt in the VRAGE 2-powered Space Engineers 1.

While the ability to share creations is not yet present in VS1.0, forums and social media platforms have become rife with images and videos of players creations. The available block set in Space Engineers 2 is currently limited, largely comprised of basic block shapes and just enough functional blocks to allow a player to move and control their creation. The survival elements like mining, refining, production and research or progression are not yet available in this iteration of the game - take a look at the roadmap later in the article to see where these elements will start to make an appearance.

In short, Space Engineers 2 at the outset of its Early Access period is already playable, although the single-player state and limited block set limits replayability.

What Space Engineers 1 looks like now in 2025.

As a sequel, will it break enough new ground to make it worth buying?

Based on the roadmap, developer interviews and teasers already released so far, Space Engineers 2 will push the franchise forward by natively incorporating physics-heavy elements that the Space Engineers 1 community has been trying to emulate via modding for quite some time. In addition, Space Engineers 2 promises to move the franchise beyond simply being a sandbox survival-building game with a few narrative scenarios. Instead, players are being sold a future where the game includes a full narrative campaign and overarching lore that serves to flesh out the playing space and give more purpose to the player’s actions and creations. For the moment however, these elements are not yet in the hands of players, and remain largely in the realm of roadmaps and teaser videos.

At the outset of early access, the biggest change that Space Engineers 2 has shown is a vastly improved building system. In the first game, players had to choose whether to place large-scale or small-scale blocks when creating a given vehicle or station (‘grid’), and could not easily mix the block scales. There were ways to do it through the use of physics objects like landing gears or rotos with off-scaled heads, but this was an awkward and imperfect solution. Space Engineers 2 removes that issue from the start, allowing players to mix and match block scales on the same creation.  This is already leading to an explosion in player creativity through the ease of detailing it allows, and by itself marks a large step forward for the many creative players of the franchise.

What Space Engineers 2 looks like at its early access release.

What can I expect from it as it finishes development?

Keen Software House has presented a fairly polished looking roadmap for Space Engineers 2 that breaks development into ‘vertical slices’ that each represent a major milestone. Within each slice can be multiple smaller releases that add or refine features related to that milestone, with the intent being that work on one milestone is complete before major development on the next takes place. This is a major departure from the way that development ran for Space Engineers 1, where fixes and alterations were happening to multiple major systems simultaneously - and often new feature X would result in bugs or breaking of previously deployed feature Y, which then got patched and resulted in bugs in feature X, etc. etc.

The major elements that Space Engineers 2 promises (and can be seen in the Keen Software house roadmap below) are physics improvements that allow for volumetric water, improved planet generation, improved survival mechanics over the original game, and a full campaign to give life to the sandbox franchise. Community speculation is wild over the exact elements of what these will entail, with lots of ‘they should include X, Y and Z!’ comments visible in various forum spaces. Even just holding to the elements presented in the official roadmap, Space Engineers 2 promises to provide more options on how players interact with the world and much more of a meaningful connection between the world itself and players through developed lore. Gone will be the days where every YouTube channel needs to create its own unique, coherent universal lore in order to tell a story - instead, common elements will be available to anchor their tales for the audience.

Summary

Overall, Space Engineers 2 at the outset of early access presents an immediately playable creative sandbox, backed by a company with 15 years and three games under its belt. The well-defined roadmap speaks to features that will mark a significant step up from the previous game, and developer Keen Software House seems to be approaching development in a much more organized fashion that speaks to lessons learned from previous titles. This won’t be a title that releases with full features a few months after entering early access, but for players who are willing to be patient it promises expanding options and huge potential. If you’re looking for a full-featured game that just needs a little polish before release however, this isn’t the game for you - yet.  For the patient, this looks like a title that will develop if given the time to do so.

Din's Champion - PC Preview

Din's Champion by developer and publisher Soldak EntertainmentPC(Steam) preview written by Richard with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes
Are you interested in a side-scrolling action RPG with crafting mechanics? Looking for something a little more gritty than the usual cutesy stuff that's more well known? Well then, Din's Champion may be what you're looking for!

Din's Champion is like a weird mesh of Terraria gameplay and old-school Diablo stylization. The main gameplay consists of your chosen created hero attempting to confront his arch nemesis. You are dropped in a 2D world where you can go around attacking the blocks that make up the environment, collect them, and craft with them. Among this world are creatures and enemies you combat along the way, whom you may also mug for materials and experience. Upon earning enough and leveling, you can upgrade some of your stats, such as vitality or dexterity, as well as assign points to various skills.

Skills come in different varieties, but let's take a look at ability skills and "trades" skills. Ability skills are what you may be familiar with from other RPGs, either active or passive, and will either provide an attack or healing/buff effect, or have a passive improvement to your character. The "trades" types of skills are mining, tailoring, forging, and the like. These skills will increase as you perform the related action and provide benefits, and you also get points on level you can assign to help speed up the process.

So, how does the world of Din's Champion work? Well, you get tossed down into an area ravaged by evil, and it is your task to eliminate it. You have a crystal nearby which acts as a respawn point if you aren't playing hardcore mode, and can find various gates which you can activate in order to fast travel around. Your goal here is to eliminate the bad guys while protecting the crystal. If it gets destroyed, you lose. After completing a "level", whether you win or lose, you're sent to the next area with your stuff in any rooms you own, within a certain range of your crystal, or you have on hand.

Each "level" consists of a randomized set of areas with different suggested enemy levels. Both items and enemies can spawn in here, and it doesn't always have to make sense. For example, the first nemesis I fought was stuck next to the side wall that can't be destroyed, and I literally had to dig my way to him. On an interesting note, the world is always active, and enemies and NPCs that are around can, and will, interact or fight with each other. I had one boss I was gunning for die suddenly because an NPC had killed him while I was looking for him. That being said, any quests you pick up, whether via NPC or your crystal, can have a time limit on them. These limits aren't always stated, but if the NPC dies, or something happens to your quest target, it could mean failure.

When you start up a new character, there are a number of different classes you can potentially pick. From the standard "weaponmaster" to "ninja" or "fire mage". Each class has a different set of character skills, the trades remain a constant, and different suggested playstyles. You can unlock more classes by earning different achievements, which the game has a handy indicator for checking.

Your basic gameplay loop will probably consist of: mining, trying to find materials, crafting better gear, mining for better materials, crafting better gear, trying to beat a nemesis. Rinse and repeat until either failure or success. Be careful though, as you will have to explore a lot to find many of the enemies you're looking for, while also making sure your home crystal is protected and recruiting NPCs if you can. You may also have to dig. A lot. In the first two worlds I made, I needed to dig to get almost anywhere, which gets frustrating when it rains and for some reason polluted water starts falling down your tunnel. Pro tip, light brown water is polluted and will damage you. A LOT.

When you go about creating a new world you have options to customize your gameplay. You can choose a world size, as well as a pacing setting which determines how aggressive enemies will get, but also exp values. You can use these settings to cater the gameplay to your desired experience. For the most part, I never really noticed the enemies getting too aggressive with the crystal on the standard pacing, so you can take your time in the beginning getting used to the game at first.

Now, as this is a preview and not a full release, there is room for improvements. A couple of issues to be noted at the time of writing this deal with some movement issues, skill usage, and combat interactions. Movement is...weird, I suppose I could say. You walk faster going forward, and you face the direction of your mouse cursor, which results in a really awkward time trying to back away from an enemy. I did also notice that sometimes you get the slowed speed even if you're facing the right direction for a little while before you speed back up. Additionally, the jumping is really inconsistent. I couldn't figure out how to get a jump height that remained the same for very long. Sometimes you jump high, sometimes you have a half jump, and I couldn't figure out what was different between attempts.

Skill usage is also really awkward. If you acquire a skill by using your skill points it gets put in your hotbar as a default. It took me way too long to figure out it actually assigns to right click for use, leading me to think my skill just didn't work. It was pretty frustrating, and should probably have been explained a little clearer. Lastly we have combat interactions. Hitbox detection needs some hella work. You can stand three tiles above an enemy, swing to the right with a sword, and still hit them. Unfortunately, enemies can also take advantage of this oversight. There were a few times where I thought I was outside an enemy's range, only for the attack to hit twice as far as the combat animation would imply. It's janky, but at the very least it works both ways.

Another bit of a complaint I have at the moment is with the user interface. While the character and skill menus are fine, the navigation for the crafting menu is both ugly and a little annoying to sift through. Maybe sorting it by types of craftables and changing the graphic design would help. Oh, and stopping the equip menu opening when you want to put down a crafting station or related item from your inventory would be nice as well.

Din's Champion shows a lot of potential, and I'm hoping it only continues to get more fleshed out as progress continues. I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on Din's Champion as the development continues. A little more fleshing out of some aspects, especially the combat and hitboxes, and Din's champion could be pretty rewarding!
