Announcing Dragon's Dogma 2 by CAPCOM and Koch Media!

London (June 17, 2022) In today’s “10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma” Developer Video, Dragon’s Dogma™ director Hideaki Itsuno announced the highly anticipated Dragon’s Dogma™ 2 is now in production using Capcom’s RE ENGINE. This highly anticipated reveal followed a discussion of the inspirations behind the monsters, combat, and unique gameplay mechanics that define the high-fantasy world and open-world action of Dragon’s Dogma. The much-awaited sequel was announced with the reveal of the logo for the upcoming title.

The “10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma” Developer Video can be found on the Dragon’s Dogma YouTube channel, and the logo for the upcoming Dragon’s Dogma 2 can be found on the Capcom Press Site.

Itsuno began the developer video by recounting how classic pen-and-paper role-playing games introduced him to the genre of high fantasy and RPGs as a whole. After these early experiences captured his heart, Itsuno went on to develop a passion for arcade and action titles, especially the combat of Capcom’s Street Fighter™ II. By the year 2000, Itsuno had released multiple titles for Capcom’s arcade division and began piecing together the first concepts for a game that would eventually become Dragon’s Dogma. This dream would have to wait however, as Itsuno was assigned to finish the production of Devil May Cry™ 2, and its sequels Devil May Cry™ 3 and Devil May Cry™ 4.

After completing production on the Devil May Cry games, Itsuno returned to his passion project at last. The distinct approach to magic combat and the ability to grapple towering foes already set Dragon’s Dogma apart from its contemporaries, however, it was the game’s unique Pawn System that helped cement its place as a fan favorite. This special system was born from Itsuno’s desire to keep the game a single-player experience, while still allowing players to feel connected to one another by sharing the AI companions they create and train. As development progressed, it was the production team’s trips to the United Kingdom that inspired the rolling hills and architectural identity of the world players would explore.

As Itsuno finished looking back at the origins of Dragon’s Dogma, he gave fans the first look at what lies ahead for the series with the surprise reveal of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Itsuno and the Dragon’s Dogma 2 development team including Dragon’s Dogma veterans Daigo Ikeno and Kenichi Suzuki are hard at work creating the sequel and are excited to share more details in the future.

Jaggy's Corner - Summer Games Fest 2021 Wrap-Up

Summer Games Fest began in 2020 as the brainchild of Geoff Keighley. The free digital event is allowed to be co-streamed and it includes world premieres, dev interviews, and more! This year, viewers were able to see announcements and world premieres by a number of The Summer Games Fest partners including Annapurna Interactive, Capcom, Devolver Digital, Epic Games, Gearbox Publishing, Finji, Frontier, Koch Media, Bandai Namco, Netflix, Psyonix, Raw Fury, and Square Enix. However, there are multiple other partners that I didn’t list, but suffice it to say, the audience was able to experience some amazing announcements.

For the purposes of simplicity, I’ve categorized the games under Indie, Triple-A, and Unclassified. Sometimes a publisher is quite large but a developer is an indie. Other times, a studio might be rather small in size but have a huge reputation. Basically, what I’m saying is that readers may not agree with the overall category of these titles. My article here is just to talk about some of the announcements I’m excited about, so don’t fly off the deep end yeah?

Indie Games

In the indie category are some amazing titles that I’m super excited about for different reasons. The first one is Two Point Campus for me. See, I wanted Two Point Hospital without it being Two Point Hospital. I wanted the same style of game but a different backdrop or setting. As in, something that doesn’t revolve around the medical profession. Now, we finally have that and I want the game. True story.

Once again Raw Fury impresses me with their titles. The studio announced Sable, a beautifully illustrated open-world exploration game where players float, glide, and parkour their way around an alien planet. Players will learn the history of the inhabitants by checking out ancient ruins and monuments. What happened here and what will we learn? Frankly, I have no idea but I really want to know. The game will be available on Steam in late September and I am excited about it!

Another title that I almost missed by virtue of the fact that I wasn’t able to watch the entirety of Summer Games Fest because of the simultaneous E3 announcements is OXENFREE II: Lost Signals. Some of you may know that Epic Games often releases games for free each week. One of those titles was OXENFREE and originally I was hesitant on it. Thankfully, my amazing other half recommended I grab it and I’m so glad I did. While it’s a bit of a spooky title because of how the supernatural elements are presented, it is a worthwhile story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Originally, OXENFREE II: Lost Signals was announced during the Nintendo Indie World showcase back in April, but I saw it mentioned again. Needless to say, I’m quite happy and intrigued to find out more secrets about that place.

Some awesome announcements that I’m interested to see more about like the new Hide and Seek mode in Among Us that I’ve seen as mods for the game (It still confuses me sometimes), Solar Ash which has a graphics style similar to Risk of Rain and looks like an interesting action-adventure and platform game, Sky Children of Light – a neat open-world adventure game that will be released for the Nintendo Switch, and Planet of Lana which is a hand-painted cinematic puzzle adventure game where players follow a young girl and her pet friend. All of these titles look really interesting and spectacular so I may get my hands on some of them.

Other games announced that I qualified as indie are:

• Amplitude – Endless Dungeon
• Stray Bombay – The Anacrusis
• Torn Banner Studios – Chivalry II
• Dotemu – Metal Slug Tactics

Triple A Games

Some of the Triple-A games this year have some announcements I’m excited about starting with Jurassic World Evolution 2. Players get to continue designing a dinosaur zoo and splice the genes of different dinosaurs with others. As in, you can create new species of dinosaurs! Yeah. I’m all about zoo and park building games, so this is definitely on my list of titles to get!

Epic Games and Psyonix announced their partnership once again with the Fast & Furious franchise presumably because F9 is now officially in Theaters. This means that Rocket League has a DLC pack for the Dodge Charger and the Nissan Skyline that was released a couple of years back to promote the Fast & Furious series. However, because of the latest installment of the movie a new car has been added to the pack which is the Pontiac Fiero. Since I already own the first two cars, I won’t be rebuying the DLC for the Fiero, but people who missed out the first time around will be able to play with these smexy cars!

Two more games grabbed my attention during the Summer Games Fest and they are Tribes of Midgard – a Norse survival adventure RPG where players have to build up to defend against giants – and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart which is a third-person shooter platformer and a sequel to Ratchet & Clank! Both these titles look amazing and I definitely want to give them a go.

Of course, it’s no secret that I’m a D&D fan as I have been playing for years and have kept up with a couple of shows like Critical Role on Twitch, so it stands to reason that the new action RPG D&D Dark Alliance is on my list of games to look at. It is a spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance and I’m interested to take a stab at this game.

Another title that I’m curious about is Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. While my introduction to the Monster Hunter series is World, I strangely enjoy the game. Besides, what’s not to love about Palico cat chefs! Yes. I am aware that Stories and World are completely different, but I am very interested to give this one a go. I may suck horribly at it, but why not? I’ve heard lots of good things from Monster Hunter fans.

Finally, there were a number of games that aren’t my style like Death Stranding Director’s Cut (although, what the heck were we supposed to glean from that trailer?), Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Salt & Sacrifice, Call of Duty Warzone Season 4, Far Cry 6, Tales of Arise, Dark Pictures Anthology – House of Ashes, and the show stopper Elden Ring. Now I know that many people are hyped about all of the aforementioned games but I don’t do CoD, Souls-like, or horror games. I’ve never had the opportunity to dry a Far Cry game and while I might enjoy it, I would probably struggle. These are just not really my style, so don’t fret.

Unclassified Studios and Titles

Sharkmob announced a new game called Bloodhunt which is a free-to-play battle royale title where players are vampires, and I’m excited. People who are interested in this sort of game can sign up for the closed beta on the website. Normally battle royales aren’t my thing, but this is vampires and it looks really awesome. I shall come for your blood!

Amazon Games finally showcased New World and Lostark that are both RPG games. I knew about New World coming out quite a long time ago. However, Lostark was not on my radar. It is a Korean-based MMORPG that is coming to North America. I’m a little hesitant on that one because the last Korean MMO did not leave a good taste in my mouth due to reasons… Anyways, maybe it’ll do well because it looks really awesome, but I’m not holding my breath.

At Summer Games Fest 2021 a new developer called Deviation Games announced their presence as did new publisher Finji. Neither studio has a lot of information to report, but I’m glad that we have the potential for new and exciting games in the future.

Koch Media announced a new publishing label Prime Matter that will be home to well-known franchises like Gun Grave G.O.R.E, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and Mount and Blade. The label will also have Dolmen, Encased, and Scars Above, just to name a few. More details can be found on their website or you can see the showcase here.

Summer Games Fest Thoughts

Between the two showcases of E3’s yearly event versus Summer Games Fest, I felt more enamored by the games presented in this list. While it’s not as extensive of a lineup, my interest is much higher for a lot of these games. I was even more hyped up about Elden Ring because I knew that people would be excited about the title, and I don’t care about souls games! On top of that, we did get to see some new shows and a movie featured at the event, and I’m all about movies. Besides, Ryan Reynolds is awesome. (You can check out that trailer here.)

Jaggy's Corner - E3 2021 Wrap-Up

E3 2021

This year E3 was completely showcased online due to the length of the pandemic that we are still recovering from. With it came a number of challenges, not only for game developers but for companies showcasing new games they’ve been able to work on during the last few years. In this article, I’m going to cover many of the E3 announcements this year, as well as some of my most anticipated.

Nintendo Direct

Out of the Nintendo Showcase came a number of titles being ported to the Nintendo Switch like Worms Rumble and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. Both of these titles I’m excited to see on the Switch because I played a bunch of both Worms and Tony Hawk games many years ago, so it’s on account of nostalgia. I’m also personally excited for some more Legend of Zelda because Breath of the Wild 2 was announced! Again, while I haven’t played all of the Zelda series, it holds a special place in my heart, meaning I will not miss this title when we get it in 2022.

Metroid fans can rejoice because a new game was announced titled ‘Metroid Dread‘ which puts players in the role of Samus Aran. This is the fifth installment of the Metroid series and fans of the side-scrolling action can finally look forward to this latest addition.

Beloved Shin Megami Tensei V is slated for launch in November 2021 which will make plenty of fans of the role-playing title happy. The game is designed to be a hybrid between Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne and Shin Megami Tensei IV, so expect to be raising and fusing demons along with other new mechanics. I’ve never tried this series, but I do know that many people in my circle are hyped for this one!

Dear Villagers is publishing a JRPG this year titled Astria Ascending and it looks fantastic. I’m not too familiar with this title but knowing that it’s being published by Dear Villagers who brought titles like Hover, Edge of Eternity, and The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos, I’m interested to watch some of Astria’s gameplay.

There were a few more titles announced which are: WarioWare: Get it Together, Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania, Mario Party Superstars, Cruis’n Blast, Danganronpa Decadence, and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Remaster.

Square Enix

So we all know about my love for Dontnod’s Life is Strange series, yes? Well good news for people like me! Life is Strange is being remastered and I have to say that the graphics do appear to be much better than the original (Although, I’m not sure that the games will be worthwhile to purchase again, but we’ll see.) Anyways, we also saw a more in-depth trailer for Life is Strange: True Colors where players get to be Alex, a woman who feels the emotions of others. This is a must buy for me in September of this year!

Strangely I’ve missed any news about the Hitman series since the third game was released as the final installment, but Square Enix surprised us with a mobile, free to play title called Hitman Sniper: The Shadows. The mobile market has gained a lot of traction over the last couple of years and it shouldn’t be a surprise that studios are jumping on the band wagon, so who knows? This game could be good. I may give it a shot. (Terrible, I know.)

I love a good Final Fantasy game and Square Enix hit us with a trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. This title is an action role-playing game and is a spin-off of the main Final Fantasy series. Although, based on the trailer, I can’t say I have high hopes for it right now. The trailer repeats the protagonist’s need to kill someone named Chaos and if that is the sole motivation for the story, UGH. Square, I hope for your sake and for Final Fantasy fan’s sake that there is more to the game than that. Just saying…

Finally, Square Enix showcased a new Guardians of the Galaxy game, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I am often skeptical of movie-to-video game renditions. I’m especially worried about it because of the terrible Fast and Furious video game. While it would be awesome to ride with the Guardians and maybe attempt to stop Thanos before oblivion happens, I don’t have high hopes for a video game. I especially don’t tend to have high expectations given that the showcase for it was needlessly long. I want this to be good, but I don’t know yet. We’ll see.

Xbox and Bethesda

Out of all the game announcements from this year’s E3, there is only one that I shrieked over. That would be for more SLIMESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Yes. That’s right. We are getting a Slime Rancher 2 and I’m over the moon. I played a ton of the first game on stream and absolutely loved every minute of it. I will get this game and play a TON of it, because it’s just that good. Trust me. You’ll thank me later.

Technically, there was a second title I would have been really excited about. For reasons I’m not going to go into here, I happen to love Top Gun (and yes, this does mean I will be watching Maverick in Theatres when it releases very close to my birthday. It’s tradition. Top Gun can never be a quiet movie. NEVER.) Now, if this Top Gun trailer was a standalone game, I’d be ALL OVER IT. Alas, no. Top Gun is merely a DLC for Microsoft Flight Simulator. You almost had it. ALMOST. *Grumbles*

There’s another title in the Xbox line-up that has peaked my interest and that is The Ascent which looks to be a cross between Cyberpunk and XCOM. It is definitely a third person game and players seem to be able to have a squad, but I am not yet sure if this is a single player or multiplayer title. Either way, it looks neat and I’m totally down for more tactical games especially if they are in the vein of Cyberpunk. Check out the trailer here.

A couple other intriguing games are Redfall – a vampire game which can be played solo or multiplayer, Psychonauts 2 – a cute platformer which was developed by Double Fine, Starfield – a first person action-adventure game, Twelve Minutes – an interactive thriller by Annapurna, Aragami 2 – a ninja stealth game developed by Lince Works,

Other titles announced during the Xbox showcase were:

• Shredders – Developer Foam Punch announced this snowboarding game
• Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising & Hundred Heroes – A JRPG that was successfully Kickstarted and launches in 2022
• Forza Horizon 5 – Playground Games returns to the stage with this popular driving title
• Party Animals – This is a physics-based brawler which looks like Gang Beasts but with animals
• Replaced – A side-scrolling steampunk action game coming out in 2022
• Somerville – By Jumpship comes a sci-fi adventure where players try to make their family whole again
• Battlefield 2042 – The iconic first person shooter by DICE and published by EA is releasing the seventeenth installment in the series
• Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl – Sequel to Shadow of Chernobyl, Stalker 2 is a first person survival shooter from GSC Games

Devolver Digital

Devolver Digital always has an interesting showcase where I often don’t think the games are real until I look them up. As history shows, the studio doesn’t have many games to show off, but what they do announce tends to be different than others. One of those titles is Death’s Door which is classified as adventure, shooter, action roleplaying, and fighting game. Players take the form of a crow who reaps the souls of the dead. It sounds strange because it is.

Another title announced by Devolver Digital is a game called Inscryption which is a card-based deck building roguelike mixed with some escape room puzzles and psychological horror. As I said, they announce games that are off the wall, and this one is no different. Check out the Inscryption trailer here.

Coming to the App Store and Google Play later this year comes the title ‘Tumble Time’. This game is so strange that I don’t even know what to say for it. If you’re brave enough to think that your head won’t explode, check out the trailer here.

The final three titles that were announced at E3 this year are Demon Throttle, Trek to Yomi, and Wizard with a Gun .(Not gonna lie, I kinda want this even though I know I would SUCK HORRIBLY at it.). Feel free to check out all the trailers for those to get more information about them.

Ubisoft

Is it really E3 if we don’t have a Just Dance announcement? Probably not. Normally we have some embarrassing demonstration or performance that makes the dancer in me roll over in my future grave. As much as I love the Just Dance series because it is a fun game, the marketing kills me every year. Please, I beg you. Find another way to market the game because this travesty needs to end. I BEG YOU.

Just when I thought the face-rolling was done, Ubisoft announced Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Don’t get me wrong, at the time the Avatar movie came out, it was a cinematic marvel. But movies that become video games are very much hit and miss. Some of the good ones include Mortal Kombat, Golden Eye, Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek Bridge Crew. It’s not to say that the Avatar game can’t be good, it’s that I don’t have particularly high hopes for it. (Also, I wasn’t super enthralled with the movie like most people were.)

I know a lot of people who are extremely excited for Rainbow Six Extraction, but I’ve never been much of a shooter kind of player. It doesn’t help that the developers felt the need to change the original name from quarantine. The word is not bad or malicious and I don’t see why the change was necessary. Anyways, I’m sure the fans of Rainbow Six Siege will be excited for another title but to me it’s just another shooter.

There are two titles that grabbed my attention during E3 and those are Riders Republic – a first person cross between the Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Steep, and The Trials series – and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Riders Republic has a lot of potential replayability with the different modes while Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a tactical strategy game like the first one of its kind. And honestly, I really loved the first one.

Koch Media

From Koch Media we saw a trailer for King’s Bounty 2 which is an upcoming turn-based tactical RPG. While I never played the first game, this title is a fantasy based game that I’m interested in looking at. We also saw a trailer for Encased: C.R.O.N.U.S. which is a sci-fi RPG with what seem to be factions. Another sci-fi RPG that also combines horror elements is a game titled Dolmen which will be available on the PS4 and PS4 in 2022.

E3 Final Thoughts

Overall, I found that this year’s E3 presentation was lacking something for me. I think because of the pandemic I wasn’t as excited for it this time around. It has nothing to do with the games presented or the developers who worked tirelessly from home to present upcoming games to the public. That said, I’m glad that E3 even happened because most other events delayed their in person shows to 2022. While I wasn’t as hyped up this year, a few presentations impressed me with their upcoming releases.

Windbound

Outward – The Soroboreans

King’s Bounty II

Offering a fresh take on the acclaimed fantasy series, King’s Bounty 2 expands upon its tactical turn-based battles to offer players a truly immersive RPG experience that adds weight to their every decision, whether leading an army into battle against unliving horrors, or building relations with local townsfolk.

Players take on the role of one of three heroes - each a personality with their own background - and experience a non-linear adventure in an open and vibrant fantasy world. Split into two distinct phases, players traverse the realm from a third-person perspective, picking up quests, exploring the wilderness, and getting to know the people they meet. When conflict arises, however, the perspective shifts to tactical, turn-based combat. Players must then make smart use of their units as they fight to win.

ProtoCorgi

ProtoCorgi is a retro-style pixel art, horizontal shoot ‘em up with arcade gameplay that gives the player control over Bullet, a C3 (Cute Cybernetic Corgi) class cybernetic pup. When Bullet discovers that Nixie was kidnapped by evil alien forces seeking galactic domination, the cute-yet-deadly Corgi goes on a quest to save her. The adventure ahead lets you experience Bullet’s fights with precise controls, solid gameplay and passionate storytelling. Shoot, dodge and bark your way through this adorable bark’em up.

Relicta

Relicta is a first-person physics-based puzzle game. Played through the eyes of a scientist, you’ll need to use your creativity to play with the laws of physics, utilizing magnetism, polarity and gravity to unravel the secrets of a research facility on the moon. Chandra Base will test your scientific skills, as they are the only thing that can keep your daughter alive.

Relicta will be part of the gamescom lineup as well as the Indie Booth Arena. Developer livestreams will give a deeper look into the creative process behind the puzzle game.
