The Expanse: A Telltale Series Named Tribeca Festival's Official Selection in Games

Story-Rich World of Near Future Deep Space Comes to Life in Prequel of Popular Television Series

LOS ANGELES – Thursday, May 11, 2021 – Telltale, the leading narrative game development studio and publisher, announced today that its upcoming episodic narrative adventure game, The Expanse: A Telltale Series, has been named an Official Selection for the 22nd Annual Tribeca Festival. Developed in conjunction with award-winning studio Deck Nine Games, The Expanse: A Telltale Series marks the first new Telltale title released since the company’s resurrection.

Telltale and Deck Nine will premiere all-new gameplay during the New York City-based festival, which runs June 7-18, and during the adjacent Digital Tribeca Festival Game showcase on June 9th. The Tribeca Festival is also hosting an in-person panel with the game’s development team on Saturday, June 10 at 4:30 PM ET. The Expanse: A Telltale Series will be available for hands-on play for ticket holders throughout the event and, as an Official Selection, the game is eligible for the 2023 Tribeca Festival Game Award.

The Tribeca Festival brings artists and diverse audiences together to celebrate storytelling in all its forms, including film, TV, VR, games, music, and online work. The Games program at the Tribeca Festival celebrates the convergence of games, entertainment, and culture, highlighting the storytelling, art, and innovation of games.

“We are thrilled to be a Tribeca Official Selection,” said Stephan Frost, the project’s game director. “The Expanse is an exceptional work of fiction and we at Deck Nine feel honored to have contributed to this universe in the video game medium.”

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is prior to the events of the popular TV series which is available to stream in its entirety on Amazon Prime. Players take on the role of Camina Drummer (played by actress Cara Gee in both the game and TV series), the leader of a scavenging crew on the hunt for a mysterious treasure on the edges of The Belt. As Drummer, players must work with a mix of powerful personalities, square off against a bloody mutiny, explore locations beyond The Belt, and, most of all, make tough decisions that will decide the fate of The Artemis crew.

Several new gameplay elements that go beyond what people experienced with past Telltale titles are introduced in The Expanse. Players have greater authority over the action. The ability to communicate with the crew over radio at the player's discretion keeps the plot and dialogue choices moving forward simultaneously with the player’s exploration, and all those character interactions affect the story’s conclusion.

“From the very start of development, our focus for The Expanse has been on the quality of the narrative and the opportunity to tell an incredible story filled with amazing characters that the player can participate in,” said Telltale CEO Jamie Ottilie. “Being named a Tribeca Festival Official Selection is the ultimate endorsement that we are on the right path, and we are honored to be included.”

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is expected to be released for PC and leading consoles in Summer, 2023. To learn more about The Expanse: A Telltale Series and the new Telltale Games, please visit www.Telltale.com.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - The Final Season - PS4 Review

Clementine has made for an interesting character over the last seven years, showing a great deal of growth in multiple ways. I never expected this small girl I encountered back during the first season of The Walking Dead to wind up becoming the primary one who would serve as the connective tissue for so many more episodes and seasons. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - The Final Season is laser-focused on Clementine and her relationship with adopted son A.J. and how eerily similar Clementine's life has come to mimicking her early protector, Lee.

Jaggy's Corner - Saturday November 17

Every other news site has covered the chaos that is Fallout 76 at launch. While I considered doing the same, especially after finding out about the fact that the beta had no uninstall option unless players purchased the game, that it has been review bombed on Metacritic, but the crowning glory of the steaming pile of crap was Bethesda's attempt at smoothing launch day over with this Tweet.

You may recall the E3 articles where I covered most of the upcoming game announcements earlier this year. From those articles, it should be clear that I've never been much of a Bethesda fan in the first place. They have a history of buggy launches and it makes me wonder what types of systems they are running their own games on. So there's that.

Anyways, since I know precious little about the franchise itself, and I'm not terribly interested in the game, I decided to avoid ranting about it because, in the end, I don't care about the game nor most anything that comes out of Bethesda. That said, I'll happily pass along other people's biting criticism, like that of Jim Sterling's Jimpressions video (below). Otherwise, if you want to know about the giant issues Fallout 76 has had since its launch on November 14th, then google is your friend peeps, but I suspect the gaming world is already very familiar with them!

This week I stumbled across some other bits of news that I thought was way more interesting. So, let's talk about EA, shall we? * Shudder *

Command & Conquer News

I practically rolled over and died when I came across the idea that Command & Conquer will be remastered. I know a lot of Chalgyr contributors are quite excited, though, I am not sure how I feel about it.

In short, EA is hiring the original employees of the franchise from years ago so that the remake remains faithful to the beloved series. EA even went as far to say that the C&C games will be 'without microtransactions', despite having explicitly stated that every game will have them. (I mean, this is EA we are talking about here. I'll believe this non-micro transaction riddled franchise when I see it.)

“all three expansion packs will be bundled with the base games into one remastered collection - without microtransactions.” [emphasis added]

Unfortunately, the only history I have with the C&C franchise is a handful of games that I played a few years ago when an ex-boyfriend tried to tell me that he was 'extremely good' at RTS games. (He was terrible at SC2. I should have known better in hindsight...) Hell, one of my favourite gaming songs is Hell March by Frank Klepacki. So, GOOD NEWS! He is being brought back on for this project! This can be seen below:

Now, this is fairly big because fans of the genre are all over this piece of news, to the point that there is a long Reddit thread where people have asked a ton of questions and given their feedback. The giant thread discussion is underneath the official announcement by Mr. Jim Vessella, a producer for EA games.

Because of my lack of history with the franchise, I do understand how much of a golden platter it sits on. I know that fans are more enthused about this announcement than the train wreck that was the C&C mobile game that was announced at E3 earlier in the year. However, I'll reserve judgment for when the game launches. I might even give the game a go but don't hold your breath.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider DLCs

I think one of the most interesting announcements from this week was the new seven-part Shadow of the Tomb Raider DLC. It is known as The Forge and it launched November 15th, the standalone retails for $4.99 USD. You can get the Season Pass for $29.99 USD which will give players access to all of the DLC collection as it is released.

The Forge adds new side narratives, more rewards, missions, outfits, achievements, and more! The official post can be found right here.

Each DLC will have a challenge tomb, a weapon, an outfit, and a skill. What's more is, these tombs can be completed as a single player or a co-op experience. In my opinion, adding a co-op version is great because then players receive a higher level of difficulty that some argued was lacking in the base games, I don't disagree with this either. And given that the whole point of the Tomb Raider games is to find precious artifacts, I'm happy for the added content.

In an interview with one of the developers for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, GameRevolution says, “We have a full hour of story content in each DLC.” (The full interview can be found here if you are interested.) Personally, I think for the price of the DLC, an hour worth of content and replayability with the timed challenges is more than fair. It's not just the side stories players get to experience, it's another tomb, outfits, time trials, etc...

However, the keyboard warriors out there have already written negative reviews on Steam because apparently there isn't enough content. Considering that triple A titles are regularly over $60 and are usually dealing with massive bugs, I don't see what the big deal is over a $5 DLC. Honestly, what the frick people? You say there isn't enough content for that low of a price point and I respond with quit whining, you entitled babies. What you want is worth more than $5 dollars. And nothing I've read in those negative reviews says anything substantial with respect to the DLC itself. Go be miserable elsewhere because there is a very big difference between a DLC and an expansion.

Telltale Games

A savvy Redditor discovered that Telltale Games are being removed from Steam's library. Thus far, Back to the Future and Tales of Monkey Island have become unavailable. At this point, we don't know which games will remain on Steam.

Before writing this, I've confirmed that neither of the above titles can be purchased on Steam as of November 16th. I'm not certain if the games already purchased are still playable either. At the moment, there are only 31 games listed under Telltale Games on Steam. They are:
  • The Walking Dead: The Final Season
  • Batman: The Telltale Series
  • Minecraft: Story Mode
  • Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series
  • Game of Thrones – A Telltale Games Series
  • Tales from the Borderlands
  • The Wolf Among Us
  • Puzzle Agent 1 & 2
  • and others like Sam&Max, BONE, Strongbad, etc...
Of course, the reason this is happening is because Telltale Games declared that they were shutting down. It put games like the final season of The Walking Dead in an incomplete state, which was highly anticipated by fans. Fortunately, it was picked up by Skybound Games who will complete its development.

Final Thoughts

Many other bits of news released earlier in the week that I wanted to cover but I felt like Jaggy's Corner would be too long. So I wrapped up the ones that I thought were most pertinent. As always, I'd love to know your thoughts on any of the above-mentioned topics. Are you upset about Fallout 76? How do you feel about the C&C remaster? What are your thoughts about DLC versus expansions in video games? And finally, are TellTale Games being taken off completely or just off the purchase store and are you upset about it?

Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time.

Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 5: Same Stitch - Xbox One Review

The two different seasons of Telltale Batman games have been excellent almost across the board with each episode. The finale for season two doesn't disappoint either. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 5: Same Stitch continues the trend of strong writing and creative use of familiar characters in unfamiliar circumstances to craft a satisfying conclusion to an entertaining look at both Batman and Bruce Wayne.

The Walking Dead - The Complete Collection - XB1 Review

The Walking Dead Collection is a complete gathering of the entire Walking Dead games; included in the package are Seasons 1 through 3, The Walking Dead - Michonne, and The Waking Dead: 400 Days. Rather than being just a collection though, The Collection includes updated visuals so it looks far cleaner and more vivid on modern televisions and consoles (PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X). Unfortunately though, the biggest issue with the series has not been addressed, and that is the poor performance of the engine… For those, like me, that did not have a complete collection of the five seasons (three primary, two mini/secondary seasons), this is a fantastic collection but it does not offer enough to justify the purchase if you already own the individual seasons.

In all honesty I myself have been so "zombied out" that I have stayed away from nearly every title I can think of that has been focused on the notorious shambling dead. While zombies themselves have been a large part of pop culture for the past 50 years, entering into the forefront of moviegoer's minds in 1968 with the late George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead," they have, in recent years have been forcefully thrust into the faces of gamers everywhere. From Halo to Call Of Duty, there were few, AAA shooters that were seemingly devoid of the damned things.

Telltale decided to take a different approach in 2012 by creating something of a choose your own adventure-drama, and releasing it as "Telltale's The Walking Dead." Even then, I managed to stay completely away from the franchise with my own exposure to it being only that of a spectator as I watched my brother play the first few episodes of Season 1 back around the time Episode 4 released. Since then I have not played, or shown any real interest in the series, so when this collection came along, the good folks at Telltale graciously provided Chalgyr's Game Room with a key for The Collection on Xbox One, I decided to try to set aside my general weariness surrounding zombies, and give it a try.

In one aspect I am thrilled that I did; Telltale's The Walking Dead is an excellent franchise and the first two seasons can be incredibly gut-wrenching though the third is good too, but the first two really stuck with me. On the other hand, it is still zombies; I am so freaking tired of zombies. Seriously, we need to get back to vampires, mutants, aliens, and corrupt corporations/governments…

The updated visuals are very nice and are an added bonus for the collector or new player, however the longstanding issue of performance still exists; at times my framerates would drop near 10-12 frames, others it stayed fairly constant in the low 20's. The biggest issue I ran into though, was dying due. During the loading screen that appears when you reload due to death, the game would start in the background while the loading screen still appears, and since the game loads to the same scene you were on (e.g. a scene where you are trying to stop a zombie from biting your face), you would have even less time to prevent the zombie from making a meal out of your sensitive parts. I found that reloading the episode and starting it from scratch to be a less frustrating move than constantly reloading the death scene. Beyond that though, the audio is great, visuals vibrant, and story are all incredibly captivating, which makes the performance all the more shameful as it is immersion-breaking.

For new users and old veterans of the franchise alike The Walking Dead Collection: The Telltale Series is an excellent, if steeply priced for owners of the individual seasons, investment. If only the performance had been a key factor in the collection, then this would be a must-by; unfortunately that is not the case and therefore the only real reason that I would see someone pick this up, would be for those rare few like me that have not played the series at all. Performance notwithstanding though, the Collection is an excellent choose-your-own-adventure-drama that everyone should experience at least once.

Minecraft Story Mode: Season 2 Episode 5: Above and Beyond - XB1 Review

Kudos to the Telltale Games team for making Minecraft Story Mode: Season 2 Episode 5: Above and Beyond easily the best overall episode in the season - possibly the entire series. The stakes are high, decisions matter and the action filled finale provides some satisfying closure to the story.

Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 3: The Fractured Mask - XB1 Review

This isn't the worst or the best of the one and a half seasons of Batman that Telltale Games has provided us. It's good, but not great as the story itself feels as though it is setting us up for the last half of this season, but thankfully this is not one of those episodes that just treads water and completely stalls out the plot in favor of some new character introductions.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 5: Don't Stop Believin' - Xbox One Review

And that is a wrap - our trouble-making Guardians provide a satisfying conclusion in  Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 5: Don't Stop Believin'. A pretty predictable ending does not diminish the great overall story arc punctuated by some genuinely entertaining moments for several of our characters, leaving me to hope that there will be more seasons to come.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 4: Below the Bedrock - Xbox One Review

The entire Minecraft: Story Mode series has been a hit and miss one for me, but I can happily say that the trend over the last couple of episodes continues with Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 4: Below the Bedrock. That trend? Continued improvement in all areas, from gameplay to story. I have my doubts that this series will ever rank among my favorite Telltale properties, but I have every confidence that Season Two can end on a very high note now.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 4: Who Needs You - Xbox One Review

Too often the episodic tiles released by Telltale Games trips up near, but not at the finish line. That means that the second to last chapter usually takes a couple of hits because it is working so hard to set up a fantastic final chapter. I would guess this has been the case for about ninety percent of their releases. So imagine my pleasant surprise when Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 4: Who Needs You manages to be just as good, if not better than the last episode as we see the Guardians rushing headlong into what promises to be an exciting final act.

Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 2: The Pact - Xbox One

Our latest chapter opens with an intense scene, which bodes well for Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 2: The Pact. Unfortunately, the rest of the episode just never manages to maintain that momentum and left me hoping that Episode 3 can right the ship as too many characters are crammed into this episode with too little payout for decisions that are made during the chapter.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 3: Jailhouse Block - Xbox One Review

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 3: Jailhouse Block is the latest and so far greatest episode in the second season of this Telltale Games series. It is interesting to see how Season Two is paralleling the first for me - if not in story line, at least in how it progresses and improves with every new chapter.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 3: More Than A Feeling - Xbox One Review

We're close. To what exactly? To this series reaching the same heights with me that Tales from the Borderlands did. Hands-down that was my favorite Telltale Games title so far, but you know what? Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 3: More Than A Feeling shows that the devs really have a handle on mixing some science fiction and humor together.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 2: Giant Consequences - Xbox One Review

At this point, I am beginning to think that the Minecraft: Story Mode titles are what they are. I don't necessarily mean that as a bad thing, as the series has been generally decent, without a lot of surprises or narrative growth that really improved over time. I have had a chance to play just about every Telltale adventure game they have released so far, and Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 2: Giant Consequences continues the trend of good but not great episodes set in a Minecract world.

Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 1: The Enigma - Xbox One Review

I have played numerous Telltale Games titles over the years, and there are certain trends I have noticed along the way. Usually the first and penultimate episodes tend to drag a bit, for example. While I cannot yet speak for the latter scenario, I have to say I was very impressed with how  Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 1: The Enigma kicks things off.

Week in Review - July 24th to August 11th

Welcome back to our not quite Week in Review! Being out of town last weekend I figured I would just pack two weeks into one.

Week of July 24th to the 28th

Last week started off on a good note with Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles. I don't think that I've ever played an adventure title with no combat and it made for quite a refreshing experience.

"Yonder is an important title because it proves that you don't need conflict, violence or combat in order to bring about a good adventuring experience."
- Pierre-Yves

The week then continued onto an experience that a few of us had been waiting for. Read up on Nick's experiences diving back into the classic of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.

"There are a ton of improvements to a really good game that helps to make this one of the better remakes I have had the pleasure of playing. If you missed Final Fantasy XII the first time around, it is at least worth taking a peek at since the quality of life improvements make it more accessible than it original was."
- Nick

Next up is one of my favorite tactical versus experiences in quite a while with Antihero.

"Antihero is great and well thought out. With multiple modes and a ton of replayability both online and off with a hotseat feature to try your mettle against a friend, there's no way that it'll be going quietly into the night any time soon."
- Pierre-Yves

Beating everyone on the team to the punch is Richard with the PS4 version of Fallen Legion: Sins of an Empire. His time with the Vita version is coming up!

"While Fallen Legion may not appeal to everyone, especially those who can't get timing down to save their lives (which it will in this game), there's a great nostalgia kick for older gamers, while introducing some novel systems, or at least novel takes on systems, that are sure to drawn in the younger crowd."
- Richard

Finishing off the week is Nick's time diving back into the Story Mode of Minecraft with Season 2.

"It is clear that Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 1: Hero in Residence has potential, especially if you are a fan of the original season."
- Nick

Week of July 31st to August 4th

This week started off with something that I've personally been waiting a long time for and honestly? Children of Zodiarcs is the next Final Fantasy Tactics entry that I've been waiting for.

"Children of Zodiarcs is a turned based strategy that I've been waiting for. While some elements will be familiar to fans of the style it was the elements that weren't that made this experience a masterpiece. Rolling the dice and splitting the deck became more than simple battle mechanics but were instead much more as they alone were half the battle."
- Pierre-Yves

Tuesday Nick shared his time with Gigantic which is a free to play MOBA.

"Gigantic is a really slick overall combination of shooter and MOBA, and it is far easier to learn and get into than other similar titles."
- Nick

And the middle of the week once again showed me that I need a VR Headset in my life. Preta: Vendetta Rising looks quite interesting so far.

"With more content and more options and a little additional polish around the controls, Preta: Vendetta Rising could be one of the most compelling VR titles yet."
- Nick

Thursday we took a look at the latest gaming entry of SAO with Accel World vs Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight. It's a good one, great story, great gameplay, but the Vita is starting to show its age when titles release simultaneously with the PS4.

"Accel World vs Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight is a great title though the smaller platform suffers from the lack of power that the larger one benefits from. Is it worth diving into? Definitely."

Topping the week off are Nick's impressions of Witchblood for the PC through the use of VR. I'm personally glad to see that VR isn't all about first person but that other styles can be used and still create a sense of wonder.

"VR is about immersion, and there are plenty of games out there that can immerse you regardless of visual perspective or genre. Witchblood is an action platforming game that feels right at home on the Oculus."

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 1: Hero in Residence - Xbox One Review

While I have long been a fan of the Telltale video games, Minecraft: Story Mode was probably my least favorite of their full season offerings to date. It got off to a slow start with a property that seemed somewhat ill-fitting to a narrative-heavy game. However, to its credit, I thought Story Mode got stronger near the end, finding some solid footing during the final chapter. I was hoping that momentum would carry over to Season Two, but Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two - Episode 1: Hero in Residence reminds me a lot of the first episode in the initial season's installment.

Week in Review - June 12th to the 16th

Things were a bit quiet this week with E3 but that can also depend on what you were doing. With the Skaven running right at you? Things are never quiet! Monday saw our thoughts on the newest addition to Warhammer: End Time with Vermintide's Stormdorf.

"...I seriously hope to see more of it over the next additions. They added a Boss Fight."

Tuesday we had a look at the currently in development Early Access title Kenshi. Squad Based Free Roaming RPG. It's intense but worth looking into. Lots of content and time that can be spent with this one!

"Having played From Software's wonderful happy go lucky Souls series has prepared me for the happiness that can be found outside of these walled cities."
- Pierre-Yves

Wednesday Nick took back to the Zombies with The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - A New Frontier Episode 5: From The Gallows. As another one comes to an end, Nick is probably musing on the direction of the next.

"...A New Frontier delivered a quality narrative adventure game that sets up some interesting possibilities for its next inevitable chapter."

As one series ends so does another continue! Thursday saw Nick's Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 2: Under Pressure review

"Once again I think Telltale Games benefits from the opportunity to tell an original story using established characters in a universe we are already at least somewhat familiar with."
- Nick

And then we had a bit of heavy entry to end the week with The Town of Light. Mental Illness? Horror? I think I'll avoid that town...

"So is The Town of Light worth playing? For me it was, despite the somewhat disappointing act of actually playing the game, because the tale is engrossing and the ending is incredibly memorable."

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 2: Under Pressure - PS4 Review

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Episode 2: Under Pressure continues what the first episode began, putting together an interesting tale about a group of misfits who are as often their own worst enemies as they are best friends to one another. Still, the quirky but lovable collection of characters helps to carry what has been only an average story so far, while demonstrating that there is plenty of potential to be had here in the upcoming chapters.
