Memorable Music in Gaming - October Genre - Survival / Horror

Nick

Mikko Tarmia – Soma

It’s spooky season - time for games that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Probably no genre benefits more from quality sound design than horror. Whether it’s subtle ambient sound effects to in-your-face music swells, a horror game with well-done audio can get your heart racing in a way that visuals and gameplay alone can’t quite seem to achieve.

Though it came out about a decade ago now, SOMA is still one of my favorite horror titles ever. I’ve played it on multiple platforms over the years, and even though I know what’s coming - the game still manages to create tension through its sound effects and the impressive OST composed by Mikko Tarmia. Probably best known for his work on the Amnesia and Penubra games, Mikko Tarmia also founded his own independent label called The Sound of Fiction (which is an awesome name in my opinion).

While many of his other works are better recognized, I believe SOMA is probably the best of his soundtracks that I have experienced. The game itself is a creepy science fiction game that relies on atmosphere and tension over random jump scares. Songs such as Ark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk1eidg3Pzw) and Going down really help to create the thick sense of tension in the air as you explore. Even the opening and credit themes that bookend the experience are memorable well after I had put down the game.

Viacheslav Pakalin - Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened

Like several of my colleagues, I don’t really play horror games. The closest I tend to get to the genre are investigative focussed games like Call of Cthulhu (which I only got so far before I was too creeped out) and Sherlock Holmes - which isn’t really a horror game per se. Needless to say, Sherlock Holmes is going to be my entry for this month’s memorable music because I absolutely loved this game, despite a few scenes where I was a little disturbed.

As a game, it felt a little bit pulled back from Chapter One which had an interesting gameplay method and one mechanic that just never worked for me. The Awakened was a little more focussed on what it was meant to be, and I was thrilled with the game. Especially when you consider that the music composed by Viacheslav Pakalin was brilliantly done. As the main composer for a couple of Frogwares games, it stands to reason that he earned his stripes. Each track in The Awakened is creepily simple with some haunting reverbs and a grand piano to add the atmosphere in an already tense and bloodied world. Take a listen to Warehouse 12 (https://open.spotify.com/track/3cjLWDA4PmnPt7GUtfzG84?si=a4b7e7314ad942ac) which slowly crescendos ones imagination into overdrive. Considering that the whole game is creepy enough as it is with the concept, the atmosphere, as well as the addition of this music, it is definitely a memorable soundtrack and game in my eyes.

And yes, I know, it’s not strictly a horror game. I don’t do horror games, so this is the best you get.

Richard

Dumavita/Vinicius Braga/Michel Cardosa - Enigma of Fear

I don’t play many horror games, and the ones that I do pretty much only have an ambient soundtrack instead of full music tracks. As such, I’d like to toss in Enigma of Fear. While it’s not exactly a traditional horror game, being more a mystery/supernatural/adventure type game akin to an isometric Resident Evil, it is definitely a spooky setting.

When I first started playing Enigma of Fear I was initially taken by the art style and voice acting, both of which really clicked right off the bat. As you investigate the mysterious disappearances surrounding a supernatural hotspot centered around the house of an insane family, you’ll delve into the mystery of what’s going on. What better way to set the tone than with the soundtrack? Instilling a sense of dread and foreboding, the music from Enigma of Fear really made an impact on me, both from a gameplay perspective and from a musical sense.

Dumativa, the developer of Enigma of Fear, is an amazing Brazilian game studio that really nailed the tone and the atmosphere here, in addition to producing an amazing game. Definitely a soundtrack that I found really memorable.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened - PC Review

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened by developer Developer and publisher Frogwares—PC (Steam) review written by Susan N. with a copy provided by the publisher.

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Intro To Review

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is a game that has Sherlock and Dr. Watson delving into the unknown with its Cthulhu-themed investigations. The game is meant to showcase the deep friendship forged between the two characters which end up lasting for many years to come. Not only are we all for this aspect, but Frogwares neatly places The Awakened directly after Chapter One.

What we found in this Sherlock Holmes installment is a little bit of everything: fear, dread, disgust, madness, and entertainment. Despite hitting a lot of positive beats, there are some things that were missing that didn't detract from our enjoyment but felt like there could have been a little bit more. Nonetheless, The Awakened is a solid game that we really loved playing.

Gameplay

As Sherlock has said time and again about his investigations, “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” We can think of no better way to describe some of the events that occur in The Awakened, a game that is quite satisfying and also mystifying at the same time.

Beginning with a fruitless case of the missing newspaper, we are ‘taught’ how to play the game. Some will remember how the mind palace works from Chapter One or will recall the importance of pinning evidence during an investigation, where others might be seeing this system for the first time.

A Detective On The Case

During the brief tutorial investigation, we are shown how to pin evidence, using observations and clues to figure out what happened, and ultimately we can piece it all together in the mind palace to track down the suspect. What is interesting about The Awakened are the ways in which Frogwares simplified certain aspects of the game and the obvious omissions of certain elements that were present in Chapter One.

Examples of elements that are included in The Awakened is a minor bit of eavesdropping, but it is not atrocious like it was in Chapter One. Another aspect found in Chapter One that is also present here is the use of the same symbols to indicate the type of investigative method needed to solve a crime. Also, included in the game is the use of disguises and the visualizations of crimes. These are all aspects of the game that we enjoy and appreciate in The Awakened - although there are some aspects of these inclusions which were not used as often as expected like the disguises.

Missing Puzzle Pieces

Despite the inclusions in The Awakened, there were things that were done away with. Notably, the combat system is not present. Many of the fanbase expressed their dislike of the combat system in Chapter One, and although it was neat how it was done, I was not particularly interested in that aspect of the game. Anyways, there were brief instances where things need to be shot in order to progress the story, but they are further along and sparsely used. Although, it does need to be stated that the speed at which you can aim is awful.

The lack of scientific testing is notable as well. This was something that Chapter One had, that was quite enjoyable, although it isn’t an aspect that is needed in The Awakened. And while it was something we found made investigation interesting and unique compared to other games, there was no place for this feature to be included, which is a shame.

I also noticed the lack of failure states and side quests. Unlike Chapter One, this game was much more focused on one complete and linear narrative. It was a ride from start to finish and had me scratching my head at some of the horrors presented in this installment, which was fantastic. I just felt that a few extra side quests would have added more to the experience. Also, having a lack of failure states took away from the potential to make Sherlock truly mad. Depending on the false accusations made against characters could have influenced the level of chaos that could have been seen, which would have been fascinating.

Bow Down To Cthulhu

I’ll be honest, I was a bit fearful of this title simply because of the insanity that it could bring to the table. Cthulhu, and the mythos surrounding the Great Old One is intriguing, strange, and bordering on psychotic which is an aspect of the game that is packaged well enough, yet The Awakened came off as creepy as opposed to scary - a point which I’m freakishly happy about. Narrative designers did an excellent job at putting together a story that is out of this world - literally. And through the events that Sherlock and Watson experience together strengthens their bond as the super sleuths they become. I found this particularly true as both Watson and Sherlock are playable at various stages of the game.

Graphics

Despite the bleak overtones of the subject matter and color palette, The Awakened has some beautiful graphics. Scenes range from a strangely familiar mansion to incredibly detailed crime scenes - especially the largest one in the game - to the twisted experiences Sherlock sees as he begins to lose his sanity. Even when the two travel across country, we are shown real emotion from the protagonists as well as amazing landscapes. In some cases, the scenes we investigate have just enough detail to be stomach turning - a point which adds to the atmosphere but also may cause some players to turn their heads away.

That said, there are a few minor aspects of the graphics which weren’t amazing. To begin with, the mind palace has three different types of clues. One is observations, one is items, and the third is descriptions. The issue with two of the three types of clues is that the colors are too close together. One is green while the other is blue and the specific shades of those two colors are close enough that it is easy to confuse them.

Another minor gripe with the graphics occurs leading into cutscenes or out of the minds eye analyzation windows. Occasionally the game would freeze for a few moments. And on select few occasions, Watson would physically be in the way of a particular path. Thankfully, neither gripe interfered with gameplay where it crashed or broke anything, which is why they are minor.

Audio and Music

The audio in The Awakened is incredibly well done. There is a ton of voice acting and not a lot of repetition in dialogue when talking to NPCs. In fact, there is quite the gamut of accents used throughout the game as Sherlock and Watson travel to a couple of different places to solve particularly gruesome crimes.

Sound effects used in The Awakened is also fantastic. Not only do the sound effects add to the realism of the game, but they can be the key to solving certain puzzles. There isn’t one that requires the playing of a Violin like in Chapter One, but the use of sound does make it easier to progress at times.

Considering there was only one person listed in the credits for the sound effects and the music, they did a brilliant job at creating the right atmosphere which set the tone for the entire game. Unlike other games, I was weirdly aware of the audio and music in The Awakened. Perhaps it was due to paranoia? Who knows?

Elementary Dear Watson

After making it all the way to the end of the game, I found myself satisfied with the story it told, the resolution of several characters, and the bond strengthened by the extraordinary case that Sherlock and Watson see through to the end. I also found myself wanting a bit more of what was delivered in Chapter One because many side quests were quite interesting. The Awakened only has a couple of side missions that can be found and ‘completed’ but having a couple more would have made it feel a little more fleshed out.

Even though there were aspects that I wish were present in The Awakened, this game did a fantastic job giving us a solid story and character building. Like its predecessor, The Awakened sets the foundation for more Sherlock titles (hopefully) which I’m all for.

Overall, The Awakened is a devious and twisted entry into the Sherlock series, and it is worthwhile to play. While I cannot speak to the similarities and differences from the original game, I can say that the adaptations made to fit smoothly after the events of Chapter One is fantastic. And I personally hope to have more investigative Sherlock games in the future!

Score: 8 out of 10

Let Horrors Unfold With The Launch Trailer For Sherlock Holmes The Awakened

6 April, 2023 - Kyiv, Ukraine + Dublin, Ireland | Ukrainian developer Frogwares have released the launch trailer for Sherlock Holmes The Awakened ahead of the game’s release on 11 April 2023.A young Sherlock Holmes and John Watson undertake their first case together, a chilling and psyche-shattering mystery that has them confront a secretive, Cthulhu worshiping cult.

The story is a creative re-imagining of what traumatic and sanity-breaking experiences the young detectives could have endured at this crucial point in their relationship. Memories, secrets and scars that would go on the shape them into the famous yet flawed detective duo the worlds knows them for.

“I’m not sure if any one of us will ever release another game with so many memories and emotional baggage attached to it. This game came about as necessity to keep the studio alive during the war in Ukraine but it also gave us all a very strong purpose and a much-needed distraction from everything going on around us. What is next is already in the works now that we have proven to ourselves, we can keep going, despite the war.”

- Sergiy Oganesyan, Head of Publishing, Frogwares

The Awakened will be available on April 11, 2023 on PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

New Trailer For Sherlock Holmes The Awakened by Frogwares

23 March, 2023 - Kyiv, Ukraine + Dublin, Ireland |Ukrainian developer Frogwares has released a new trailer ahead of the release of Sherlock Holmes The Awakened. In this Sherlock meets Cthulhu horror adventure, a young Sherlock Holmes and John Watson undertake a chilling and psyche-shattering case that will forever bond and scar the duo. The trailer therefore puts a spotlight on this new, expanded take on the Holmes and Watson relationship.

“One of the biggest changes we made narrative wise in this remake is how the young Holmes and Watson relationship plays out. It’s our creative take on what horrors the two could have encountered in their first major case that would then go on to solidify their famous bond. And so we’ve given much more of a spotlight to Watson here than before. He has a totally unique story-line compared to the original game, he is playable in parts of the game, and the new ending is very much influenced by him as much as by Sherlock. Since Sherlock is dealing with Eldritch gods, monsters, cults and the questioning of his very existence, Watson often acts as an anchor to stop Sherlock drifting too far into insanity. But we couldn’t just have it feel like Watson is this one-dimensional safety net with no character or flaws of his own. So this new version of the story is as much about them as two people as it is about unfathomable Lovecraftian monstrosities.” - Antonina Melnykova, Lead Narrative Designer Sherlock Holmes The Awakened will be coming out on April 11, 2023 on PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

Sherlock Holmes The Awakened Featured at the 2022 Golden Joystick Awards with New Trailer

Trailer features new gameplay footage, how much playtime to expect and a small update from the team in Ukraine.

22 November 2022 - Kyiv, Ukraine + Dublin, Ireland | Ukrainian developer Frogwares have been given a featured video spot at the 2022 Golden Joystick Awards.

The video is a summary explainer of what the game is about and how the team are coping with development as the war in Ukraine moves into its 10th month.

The recent weeks have been really tough on the team mentally with all the missile and suicide drone strikes hitting Kyiv. So it was a nice bit of respite to find out our game will be featured in this year's Golden Joystick Awards. Much thanks to them for giving our team a moment of happiness and pride in this chaos.

Watch the First Trailer of Sherlock Holmes The Awakened from Frogwares

4 August 2022 – Kyiv, Ukraine + Dublin, Ireland | Ukrainian developer Frogwares has gone live with their Kickstarter campaign to safeguard the funding of their Lovecraftian horror adventure, Sherlock Holmes The Awakened. Along with more details about the game and a collection of rewards for backers, the campaign page has two new videos from the team.

The first official trailer shows a young Holmes and Watson fleeing for their lives. A “misunderstanding” of sorts has led the New Orleans Sheriffs’ Department to hunt down the duo. After a few near misses from some shotguns, the budding detectives escape into the deeps of the surrounding swamps. But something seems noticeably off, let alone with Sherlock, who seems to already be losing his hold on reality.

The team has also released a lengthy team update video. On top of stark images of what has occurred in Ukraine during the invasion, the video explains why Frogwares have opted for Kickstarter, how the team is currently dealing with the situation, and more on what The Awakened will be on top of some additional work in progress footage of the game.

“We opted for Kickstarter to create a financial safety net for the game but also to try to give back to our closest fans wanting to support us now. This way we can give them that bit of recognition by putting their names and photos into the game while it’s still in development.”

“We also have decided to be very realistic with our other rewards and keep them all digital. We have seen devs in the past promise things that become very time-consuming to deliver. Our team simply doesn’t have that luxury.” – Sergiy Oganesyan, Comms Director, Frogwares

All the downloadable rewards on Kickstarter will be made available for purchase to all players in the future, but supporters of the campaign will be getting this content first and at a notable discount, including the game itself.

Frogwares do not have a set release date for Sherlock Holmes The Awakened but internally the consensus is that they will be able to finish and deliver the game by mid-2023, if not sooner.

The Awakened will be coming to PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Frogwares Announces Sherlock Holmes The Awakened Remake of the 2006 Original!

21 July 2022 – Kyiv, Ukraine + Dublin, Ireland | Ukrainian developer Frogwares has revealed their new game – Sherlock Holmes The Awakened – will be a full remake and substantial rewrite of their 2006 release of the same name. Previously teased under the name Project Palianytsia, The Awakened is a dark, HP Lovecraft-inspired story infused with the narrative arc of a young Sherlock Holmes taking on his first big case once he settled in London.

The Awakened will be coming to PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch with a Kickstarter campaign set to launch soon to help secure the game’s final production funds and offer fans a few more bonuses and rewards for supporting the studio at a time when their country is at war.

The first official trailer, a video update from the team, and more details about gameplay mechanics will be released alongside the start of the Kickstarter campaign. For now, the team are sharing the first screenshots, extensive details on what the game is and is asking fans to opt into observing the Kickstarter campaign to be notified once it goes live.

KS Campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frogwares/sherlock-holmes-the-awakened

What is this game about?

The Awakened remake sees a young Sherlock take on his first major case alongside his newly acquainted sidekick, John Watson. What seems like a straightforward case of a missing person quickly spirals into a web of conspiracies by a nefarious cult that worships the eldritch god Cthulhu and is attempting to bring about an ancient prophecy. The game will take the detective duo across 4 locations – Victorian London, a Swiss psych ward, the New Orleans bayous, and the Scottish Highlands – as they try to separate reality from the supernatural while trying to put a stop to these shadowy madmen.

Why Are We Making This Game Now?

The idea of using the unsettling and horror-filled events in The Awakened to continue our young Sherlock arc has been floating around the studio for a while. The supernatural, all-consuming cosmic horror setting and gameplay work extremely well as a monumental, life-altering moment in Sherlock’s formative years. Something that tops what we already did in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One and lets us continue our creative take on what Sherlock could have experienced to become such a broken and haunted genius. The story is also set up well as a great opportunity to give our take on how the profound bond between Holmes and Watson could have cemented itself. It’s something we intentionally didn’t cover in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, but a part of the Holmes story we knew we’d like to one day cover. A profound and haunting experience that essentially brings them together. “

“So we’ve always wanted to remake this game at some point, but the war has forced us into making it now. By working on a title that has the bulk of its content, scope and narrative all locked in place after just a few weeks, we are giving ourselves a much more predictable and structured development cycle. And stability and predictability is exactly what we need right now while the rest of our days remain so uncertain.” – Denys Chebotarov, Producer, Frogwares

What is being remade?

“No assets or code are being repurposed from the original game. We are essentially rebuilding the entire game from scratch to run Unreal Engine 4, using all new assets or ones we can cleverly rework from Sherlock Holmes Chapter One which came out only a few months ago. We’re also adding entirely new gameplay mechanics while reworking the original ones to expand the ways players will be solving the cases. The changes to the story and timeline mean entirely new voice acting will be recorded. We’re also reworking the camera to feel like modern third-person perspective games, remaking all of the UI, animations, cutscenes. The list goes on. It’s essentially an entirely new game with only the underlying story in the cases staying more or less intact” – Jaroslav Martyniuk, Feature Designers Team Lead, Frogwares

A list of the major changes to The Awakened include:

  • All new graphics and assets made in Unreal Engine 4
  • New and redone animations
  • Full cutscene overhauls
  • Additional investigation of gameplay mechanics
  • Rewriting the story to connect with the case from The Awakened to a younger Sherlock
  • Amplifying the story behind how Watson and Holmes came to be so close
  • Minor story rewrites to the cases
  • Additional side quests
  • New English voice-over recordings and translations into multiple languages
  • UI overhaul
  • Change to contemporary 3rd person perspective camera
  • Additional quality of life features

What is Being Rewritten?

The original Sherlock Holmes The Awakened was a standalone story with a mature Holmes and Watson taking on a case of what seemed like a simple kidnapping but turns into something much more supernatural and sinister.  We’re extremely proud of the original writing in The Awakened which over many years seems to hold up as quite a few fans and critics have told us that they consider it one of the best Cthulhu-inspired game stories out there.”

“So we are taking this foundation and keeping much of the horror, Cthulhu storyline intact but rewriting it to be a direct continuation of our young Sherlock history. Most notably we’re shifting the timeline so it’s Sherlock, a few years after the events that took place on Cordona. Watson is at his side but they are just acquaintances at this point and this is their first major case together. Much of the character interactions and lines are being rewritten to reflect this. We’re making some changes to the stories in the cases as well as some entirely new side quests. The story of how the bond between Holmes and Watson could have formed is being amplified in the writing now as well as changes to the ending to line up with all this and the psychological impact the events would have on both of them.” – Antonina Melnykova, Lead Narrative Designer, Frogwares

Why Are We Doing Crowdfunding?

“Under normal circumstances, we would secure the funding for our next game ourselves from the sales of our previous titles. But this war is continually throwing new challenges at us that each time requires we stop, regroup and adapt. This takes time, effort, and in some cases money that would normally be marked to fund the production of a game.”

“We have the bulk of the content, new features, and storyline all mapped out and locked in.  But we have rewritten the original story a fair bit and plan to use all-new voice acting so we need to now record and also translate all this from scratch. As the plan is to launch the game on five platforms we will also need extensive QA time and resources. And lastly, the team has additional features and enhancement ideas that we would like to consider adding if we were to have additional resources.”

“Through crowdfunding, we can secure all these needs and also safeguard the overall funding of the game, knowing full well we now have the guaranteed means to finish the game and handle any hurdles we could face as this war evolves. This safety net will allow us to put our team’s needs and safety first as we adapt further without derailing the entire development and funding.”

“And lastly, we also know we have a group of dedicated fans who enjoy and support our games and want to help us as best as they can right now. Through Kickstarter, we can offer these fans the chance to buy our next game now and be rightfully credited for their support in the game itself while also helping to determine some of the game’s final content and giving them a few extra rewards and bonuses.”  – Sergey Oganesyan, Comms Lead, Frogwares
