Retro Run 'n Gun Sovietborgs Comes To IndieGoGo This June 25!

May 21, 2025 | Spanish retro developer Retro Sumus is proud to announce that their 16-bit top-down run'n gun Sovietborgs will launch a campaign on IndieGoGo this June 25 targeted to release the game on retro platforms as Megadrive/Genesis, Dreamcast, and NeoGeo. In a parallel universe where the soviet empire dominates civilization after Cold War, you are in control of a squad of 3 Sovietborg units, with the goal being to explore this devastated world that's left and wipe out the monsters and rebel factions that patrol the land. The main action is displayed from a top-down perspective, similar to titles like The Chaos Engine or Gauntlet, from which Sovietborgs takes influence.

The game features pre-rendered graphics that were developed using similar techniques to classics like Donkey Kong Country and Vectorman, while its music takes inspiration by the Red Alert and the Jungle / Urban / Soviet strike series.

Sovietborgs also includes shmup-like bonus stages and hectic battles against huge, mutant bosses!

Resistence is futile. The Sovietborgs are here to free you from your freedom!

Only Tovarisch-Prime is eternal! Let’s pacify the West!

The story behind Retro Sumus

Creating new games for old consoles! Retro Sumus is a small development team located in Spain. We are professionals in different fields who got together in 2013 to revisit genres and concepts we felt were underused, or not explored in depth back in their time.

Because, really, why not?

Our previous game, Xenocider for Dreamcast, launched in January 2021. Conceived as a love letter for classics like Space Harrier and Sin & Punishment, it was an ambitious project that brought the first new 3D game to the console in over 15 years.

Our team members have also been involved in other indie projects like Pier Solar, Ghost Blade, and the Dreamcast releases of Flashback and Fade to Black. Juanjo Martín (keyboardist and musical director for Morat) and Sebastián Abreu (Legend of the Four Winds, The Curse of Illmoore Bay, Eyra the Crow Maiden) contribute their musical talent to the creation of Sovietborgs!
