Sniper Elite V2 Remastered - XB1 Review

I have long favored the Sniper series over many other shooters out there, because the tactical gameplay of sniping (my preferred class in just about any shooter) combined with the story being told tends to keep me interested longer than the quick-twitch gameplay found in most shooters. That being said, this remaster feels jut a bit unnecessarily, despite the core experience being a solid one.
Surviving Mars Gets Green with New DLC!

STOCKHOLM - May 16, 2019 - Paradox Interactive and Haemimont Games today announced Surviving Mars: Green Planet and Project Laika are now available on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, and PlayStation®4. Players can purchase Surviving Mars: Green Planet and Project Laika for $19.99 and $5.99 MSRP respectively, or the Green Planet Plus bundle that includes both for $23.90 MSRP. To celebrate Green Planet’s launch, all Surviving Mars owners can download the free Armstrong update, which adds landscaping tools, new special projects, additional buildings, a revamped Research UI, and more to the survival management game.
Purchase Surviving Mars: Green Planet and Project Laika on the Paradox Store.
Surviving Mars: Green Planet is the second major expansion for Surviving Mars, giving players the power to turn the Red Planet green and open the domes with the introduction of Terraforming Parameters. These Terraforming Parameters add new layers of strategic depth to Surviving Mars and are affected by new terraforming buildings, completing special projects, and seeding vegetation across the planet’s surface in hopes of making Mars capable of supporting human life. Additionally, Mars has become pet friendly with the Project Laika animal pack that brings a variety of pets and livestock to the alien world - but keep an eye on those pets because some of your colonists’ companions may surprise you.
The free Armstrong update continues the mission to enhance the core Surviving Mars experience for everyone. Armstrong adds a host of gameplay features, including landscaping tools that allow players to change the topology of the planet’s surface to fit their needs.
Armstrong Update includes:
- 5 Landscaping Tools and Buildings: Flatten terrain, create ramps, change surface texture, and construct rock formations to fit your colony’s needs. Landscaping does not require research and is available at the start of the game. Make sure you monitor your resources while landscaping the planet, all that displaced rock and dirt has to go somewhere!
- 3 Special Projects: Now you can capture meteors, launch high-speed comm satellites, and even launch a SETI satellite. These special projects become available when the first batch of Planetary Anomalies gets discovered and do not require previous research.
- 2 New Buildings: Players can build a Large Dumping Site and Rocket Construction Site for their colonies. The Large Dumping Site is available right away and gives you a place to put all the excess Waste Rock while the Rocket Construction Site allows you to build rockets after you have researched Advanced Rocketry.
- 20 New Events: These events add more variety at the early stages of the game, so be on the lookout!
- New Research UI: Revamped research interface.
Surviving Mars: Green Planet features include:
- Terraforming: Terraform Mars and make the hostile planet habitable for humanity. Each decision you make while managing your colony can affect the Terraforming Parameters, which includes Atmosphere, Temperature, Water, and Vegetation, and ideally brings them closer to habitable levels. Monitor your progress on a planetary scale with the Planetary Overview UI. Once you’ve made the atmosphere breathable, open the domes and let your colonists breathe Martian air!
- Green Mars: Seed the surface of Mars with various lichen, grass, shrubs, or trees and watch as they begin to turn the Red Planet green. Low maintenance plants like Lichen can improve the soil quality to help more complex plants grow while Trees produce high seed yields for your colony to harvest. Be sure to monitor your soil quality levels to keep your plants healthy and growing.
- Special Projects: Take on seven challenging Special Projects like melting the polar caps, capturing ice asteroids, launching a space mirror, and more to begin shifting the Terraforming Parameters. Be careful, these projects will have a lasting impact on the planet and will trigger natural disasters!
- 7 New Terraforming Buildings: Construct seven new buildings that can help you terraform the planet or capitalize on the changes. Use the GHG factory to release greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, the Forestation Plant to boost vegetation production, the Water Pump to fill a man-made lake bed, and more.
- Climate Calamities: Terraforming a planet can have unexpected consequences. If you release too many greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere you can trigger acid rain which reduces soil quality, or if an asteroid slams into the planet it will cause a Marsquake that can disrupt your colony’s production.
Project Laika includes:
- Animal Farm: Breed up to eight different farm animals in the Martian Pastures including Cows, Chickens, Pigs, and more. Farm animals can be raised for food in the new In-Dome Ranches or Outside Ranches, depending on their size, and consume more water than crops.
- Martian’s Best Friend: Animal Pack features 25 different pets, ranging from your usual suspects like cats, dogs, and rabbits to some unexpected critters like llamas, penguins, and platypuses. Once you terraform the planet enough, pets will go outside to explore nearby bushes and trees.
The Surviving Mars season pass includes the Green Planet expansion and Project Laika animal pack. The Armstrong update is free to all players who own Surviving Mars. To find out more about Surviving Mars head over here for upcoming news and community activities.

Touhou: Gensokyo Defenders - PC Review
May 22, 2019action, CGRreview, console, Neetpia, nintendo, Nintendo Switch, review, Switch, Touhou, Touhou: Gensokyou Defenders, Tower Defense, Unties Games
No comments
Having fought against various foes in order to reign supreme in the lands of Gensokyo before Christmas, Richard took our first look at Gensokyo Defenders on the Switch. With the latest Touhou releasing on the PC for fans of bullet hells, shoot ‘em ups and tower defense, you’ll be following the Ice Fairy Cirno on her adventure of domination and personal growth though the new set of bullet hell battles once known as Danmaku.
Gensokyo Defenders hits a good balance of character interaction and trap placements. The action based tower defense style is a hard one to balance and while some are better than others, this one finds a home somewhere in the middle. Like most tower defense, enemies will be following a predetermined path to your base which contains a limited about of hit points. In order to prevent this from happening, you’ll be using a character to fight them off while also placing defenses in your enemies’ paths to help you out by either slowing them down or thinning them out.
Starting off with Cirno before other characters both new and old, or at least new and old for me, join up, you’ll be learning the ropes of defense which rely more on your character, your skills with the shoot ‘em up style, and your tactical use of magic spells with a limited mana pool. Moving around the map is easy and can be done either quickly to beat the enemy back to your base or more slowly that allows you to perform your range or magical attacks. Something a little interesting is that no two characters are really the same which makes trying them each out quite fun. You’ve got those that are balanced like Cirno, but then you have others that are giant wrecking balls like Utsuho who will destroy the enemy and your own trap placements if you’re not careful. She’s scary...
Placing your own traps is easy as long as you’re paying attention to what you’re doing. Some traps like spikes or bushes are designed to be put in an enemy’s way so that they walk over it and get hurt or slowed. Others, like the towers, are designed to be placed off to the side of the path in order to hit anything that is walking by. As you complete stages you’ll gain access both to new trap types and the possibility to level them up.
With a total of four towers that can be equipped at a time, and these are not locked by characters, it was nice that you could remove any upgrades and apply them to another. The same system applies to character boosts which can increase their hit points, mana points or speed amongst other abilities. The catch to all of the above? The amount of points that you can invest depends on how well you completed a stage.
Completing a stage is as easy as defeating the boss on the very last wave. Completing a stage well however depends on how many hit points your base has left at the end. One enemy getting through is one point gone. You dying on the field of battle is about five points gone. So in reality, and part of the better design, is that you can afford to let one or two through, but more than that, and you’re getting a two out of three star performance. Each star you get equals one upgrade point so you’ll really want to aim for those three stars if you want to keep up with the scaling difficulty.
If there were any issues with Gensokyo Defenders it would be that the PC port is not quite the smoothest that it could have been. Even while using a controller the mouse cursor is constantly in view on the last menu item that was selected making it a good idea to keep the mouse close by. Added to that, there’s a bit of screen tearing that can happen and with no Vsync option, the visuals can give a bit of a headache until they finally decide to smooth in. The only other issue that I had, and this was more of a me issue, is that the overall wave process felt slow and there was no way to speed it. This could get pretty long sometimes especially when you had almost an entire wave of slower mobs.
Overall, Touhou: Gensokyo Defenders may not be the best Action Tower Defense out there, but it’s a good one. With many different characters and loads of stages, it’s provides a fun time and the craziness that Touhou is renowned for.

Emberlight Announced for Distribution on Steam

09 MAY 2019 - Quarter Onion Games today announce Emberlight, a roguelike dungeon crawler that combines classic PC gameplay with a novel twist.
The trailer gives players a sense of the in-depth gameplay they can expect as they delve deeper into the dungeons warping their very being. It is the corruption that makes your party powerful, as to everyone else you face.
Emberlight incorporates absorbing enemy abilities in a race against their corruption. Explore procedurally generated dungeons as your party works to complete different quests in the name of the Ember Order. But be warned: the very Ember powers used to defeat your enemies will corrupt your very soul.
Players can get access to early builds of Emberlight right now by signing up to Quarter Onion Games Patreon and joining their exclusive Discord channel where they can discuss the game's development with the team.
Co-Founder & Creative Director, William Phelps said: "When we started designing Emberlight, we wanted something that pulled from both the nostalgia of games we loved in our past as well as some of the styles of games we've greatly enjoyed in the present."
"We were huge fans of the Final Fantasy series, particular Final Fantasy X, while also having a blast playing games like Binding of Isaac, Darkest Dungeon, and Slay the Spire. We saw a path where we could combine our nostalgia with the more modern roguelike elements in exciting and fun new ways."
Emberlight will launch on Steam August 13th 2019.
About Emberlight
Emberlight is a true roguelike dungeon crawler, set in a world where the Gods have given you a great gift - and a great curse. Explore procedurally generated dungeons as a Knight of the Ember Order. Conquer the quests set out before your party, and uncover the lore of the land.
ABSORB
As a Knight of the Ember Order, you have the ability to absorb the abilities used by your enemies. Every ability used by enemies has a chance to be learned. This allows customization of each character towards whichever goals you have. But each absorbed ability has a cost...
CORRUPT
Every absorbed ability will corrupt your soul. You will slowly lose yourself to evil as the quest progresses. This expresses itself in unstable corruption traits which leads to metamorphosis into an evil being (such as a lich). And you will lose yourself to the corruption...
REPEAT
Each run will last between 30-60 minutes. After completing the quest, the most corrupted will kill off his former allies in an epic battle. This corrupted being will then begin attracting evil around them and will act as a boss in a future quest once their influence has expanded enough. They will have all the powers you have provided them during the run, providing a never-ending challenge in future runs. For every corrupted boss, a stronger party is required to defeat them. And the cycle repeats...... forever?About Quarter Onion Games
Quarter Onion Games is an indie game studio focused on breaking the barriers between both genres and platforms. Emberlight, a roguelike dungeon crawler that incorporates absorbing enemy abilities in a race against their corruption, will be their debut game.

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows - Switch Review
May 21, 2019action, CGRreview, console, Masquerada: Songs and Shadows, nintendo, Nintendo Switch, review, rpg, Switch, Witching Hour Studios, Ysbryd Games
No comments
I love masquerade parties, dressing up and hiding ones true identity behind nothing more then a face mask decorated with jewels, fancy ribbons, lace and plumage galore. But this game has more than just music and rich aristocrats parading around, for in the shadow lurks danger that will strike to kill you if you aren't careful.
Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is a pause-for-tactics RPG style game set in a dark Venetian Renaissance inspired tale for the ages. Released back in 2016 for Steam by the development team of Witching Hour Studios and produced by Ysbryd Games, originally green lit from a Kickstarter, it is now available for the Nintendo Switch. If the hand-drawn art style doesn't tickle your fancy, then maybe its rich lore and careful storytelling, fully voiced, will intrigue you.
The story opens up to our protagonist, Cicero Gavar, who is summoned from exile to help solve a kidnapping that could derail the Citte Della Ombre's and drive it into the chaos of war. During your daring adventure you will gain allies that each wield the elemental power of these mysterious masks, giving your heroes magical ability to match with their fighting style. Will they unveil the deep scars that hide in the shadows of the city.
I've never played a game quite like this. My first impression of the game trailer left me uncertain by its new style of gaming. But it was its unique look that drove me to explore this style of combat and adventure. Almost as if it was made from a coloring book each chapter opens up into brilliantly detailed backgrounds and character construction, making everything pop out in each scene.
The music is also no laughing matter. If you feel like you're being pulled into medieval Europe, then you're not wrong. I honestly felt like I was dipped into a Spanish painting crafted to take me through time, a time of war and religion. The music does a great job in guiding you through each moment, never letting you forget that you may be killed at any given opportunity.
The game tends to follow the traditional tactical approach. You choose every step your party makes, at your own pace, from position, to planning which element to cast, giving you the power to customize your AI's behavior. There is always a default option if you find that customizing your individual party members gets to be to much. As you fight your way through waves of enemies you will earn Skill Points and these points can be used to upgrade your parties abilities by either learning new spells or enhancing them.
Each member of your team also has something called a Focus. Think of it as your magic shield that gives you an extra layer of protection. As enemies attack you this shield will diminish and can only be recovered with certain skills or when a battle has ended.
Being a band of powered individuals you have an Ultimate Ability. Through the power of the Mask you can unleash a powerful attack upon your foes. It will require that you charge it through combat, but once it is full you can retaliate with force. This is the only action that can not be activated when controlling your party members moves.
If an ally falls in battle you can help them back onto their feet by standing near them and holding your action button. This will stop you from doing anything else and can only be done by the player, your AI companion will not provide support. As you help your fallen companion this will leave you open for attacks and if the enemy hits you it will cause you to restart your recovery action.
As a user of elemental power you have these effects known as Tags. These tags allow you to combine another element with another member to inflict status on your enemies. Such as Air + Earth creates Blindness or Water + Air to freeze your opponents movement speed. The combinations are many with the four elements at your disposal.
Even with talented teammates Cicero, the fearless leader, is not someone you'd want a one-on-one with. The Inspettores of Ombré is skilled at fighting in more than one style. In the mist of battle he can change into one of the three stances that he has mastered, which gives you advantages in fighting your enemies.
Sicario: In which he becomes more vulnerable to attacks, but gains an advantage on speed and agility. This gives him the ability to run behind and backstab his foes for double the damage.
Pavisierre: Gaining extra defense on his Focus and charging his Mask Charge faster, though his attack power will be cut in half.
Dirge: Most of his abilities are in the moderate rate of damage, but he does gain an advantage to dealing ranged damage from a distance.
This game has done nothing but surprise me. I never would have thought I would find myself so immersed in this historical, war ridden adventure. The story is deep and the characters are engaging, with a fantastic script we are gifted with the talented voices of Mathew Mercer, Robbie Daymond, Jennifer Hale and Crispin Freeman. The combat is fun and easy enough to follow and can also provide a challenge to keep the gears in your mind turning, but in a way that allows you to customize the outcome of a battle. Maquerada: Songs and Shadow is definitely a RPG game I would recommend to anyone who can get their hands on it. 10 out of 10 in my books.
To everyone who worked so hard and tirelessly on this piece of art... Well done!

Whispers of a Machine - PC Review
May 20, 2019action, Adventure, Android, CGRreview, Clifftop Games, Faravid Interactive, indie, iOS, Mystery, pc, Point & Click, Raw Fury, review, Whispers of a Machine
No comments
Intro
Whispers of a Machine is an indie point and click mystery game that has made its mark on me. At first, it presents itself as a normal adventure game where players are trying to find a murderer, but it quickly develops into a game that makes players think about their perspectives on life.We play Vera, a cybernetically enhanced human who's profession is special investigator of violent crimes. Throughout the game, every answer or action taken shapes Vera's personality. This is a key element in the game because depending on what path players end up on, they will receive special abilities. And as far as I've discerned, regardless of what abilities a player ends up with, the case can be solved.
I found after playing the whole game that it stands at the top of my list for favorites released this year.
Story
As I mentioned above, we follow the character Agent Vera, who is hired to solve the murder of a man named Karl – at least that's how it begins. This is a point I'll touch on later. The tutorial, which takes players through the different abilities Vera has, is simple and short. At the beginning of the game, Vera is able to use a scanner for analyzing evidence, a pulse monitor to detect a lie, and an augmentation for strength in case players need to strong arm something. As a point and click game, I expected a bit of pixel hunting and was pleasantly surprised when the developers included a way to see clickable objects.
Right off the cuff we find that Vera's personality is decided by character interactions and it dictates what Vera's path will be. Each path corresponds with and grants access to different augmentations. Once a path is locked in, the player has a new augment for the duration of the day. Although, having only gone through one playthrough, I don't know if the augments change if players move into another path between days. Anyways, these are the paths you can take and what they represent:
- Analytical – Path of Frigg
- Empathetic – Path of Baldr
- Assertive – Path of Tyr
Note that all three paths are named after a corresponding Norse deity, which is a nice touch. Though, we never discover why it is important to the story, I do appreciate its inclusion because this shows how much the developers care about the small details in a game. Now, the reason I say it isn't really understood is because throughout the course of the story, players have to decide if belief (or religion) or technological advancement is more important to the player. However, I surmise that with the Norse runes displayed throughout the game, that the townfolk lean towards belief over technology – especially since it is the catalyst that almost destroyed humanity in Whispers.
In my playthrough, I ended up on the path I expected, which is the Path of Frigg. This amuses me because the augments I received for the next day were dark vision and invisibility. I happen to like being stealthy...
Another feature of the game is that it remembers players decisions, which is what gives Vera the augmentations, but it's important to know this because the game saves often. This also means that there's no going back to a previous save in Whispers. It is a feature that doesn't bother me because once I finished the game, I was satisfied with its ending. And at no time did I feel the need to change any of my decisions, unlike other games which offer players a choice.
Characters and Voice Acting
As a murder mystery game, good characters will often make or break the story, more than the clues and the red herrings. And any good storyteller working in the genre of mystery, know how to redirect a players focus off of the truth. With that said, part of the reason I really enjoyed Whispers is because Raw Fury crafted a story that was not predictable to me. And more than that, what really sets this game apart is how the characters shape that unpredictability by the fact that they are masters of deception. Although, that breaks down into incredible writing and phenomenal voice acting. So, while I had interacted with each of the characters, the plot shocked me enough that rationalizing who might be the killer became secondary in my mind, even though solving the crimes was more important. Now for the hard part... I liked the characters but it's very difficult for me to explain anything about them because it could lead into spoilers, which is not my objective in any game review. What I can say is that each of the characters serve a purpose in Whispers, meaning that no character exists without them providing a hint or a personality path for Vera. Each of them are human (even if they have augments) and they have their own flaws, which adds to the realism of the game.
Beyond that, I'm not going to explain anything more about the characters because I feel like some of their names would spoil key elements of the mystery. This might seem like a cop out, but Whispers releases information slowly for a reason.
Having said that, Whispers has a fantastic cast of voice actors and I was able to find the Twitter profiles for most of them. Here are the people behind the voices used in the game: Violet Young, Finley Smith, Dave Gilbert, Shelly Shenoy, Andy Chmelko, Andy Manjuck, Al Pagano, Andy Mack, Sandra Espinoza, Mike Pollock, Arielle Siegel, Tom Schalk, and Ivy Dupler.
Graphics and UI
Now for the fun part!Upon launching the game, players are presented with two options. One is to start the game while the other is to open up the configuration tool. This is where players will choose the graphics driver and filter, choose the sound device, and enable full screen or windowed mode. The resolution size is automatically detected for convenience. However, these are the only options given.
Once in the game, the option menu allows players to change the language and adjust the game volumes. There is a slider for tutorials, allowing for no tutorials, critical ones, or all of them. Thankfully, the tutorial section is quite short and doesn't pop up much after going through the beginning.
The UI in this game is straight forward as well. Inventory is displayed at the bottom of the screen where it can be clearly seen, and is not intrusive to the player. This is where the scanner, pulse monitor, and augments are displayed. When players activate the scanner and every time evidence is collected, it will show up at the top of the screen. If players come across a relevant point of interest, a sound will be heard and the color in the area will change to green. Finally, players can view the path they are on by clicking the left most triangle, which is also located at the bottom of the screen.
As for the graphics, Whispers is a pixelated game that I thought would hinder gameplay. Fortunately, I was completely wrong in that aspect and found that the game was designed well enough that evidence was clearly visible to the player.
Final Thoughts
From this point forward I will talk a little bit about what really intrigued me about the game to give it a 10 out of 10 score, because there are reasons that I love Whispers. However, in the interest of saving people from obscene spoilers to the game, I wanted to mention the score before going into detail. Please be sure to follow Raw Fury, Clifftop Games, Faravid Interactive. Don't forget to purchase a copy of Whispers on Humble Bundle, Steam, GOG, iOS, and Android. Also, be sure to join Raw Fury's Discord to keep up to date on all the latest news!
Now that that is said, SOME MORE SPOILERS FROM HERE ON DOWN.
What made me really enjoy this game above others that I've played this year (with the exception of Heaven's Vault), is that players get to develop Vera's personality based on how she reacts to situations. It doesn't rely on the linear nature of the story, which can be very tired for players that enjoy games in this genre. And since the cast of characters isn't large, following the Path of Frigg made sense for me because, even though I figured out who the killer was, I had little understand of their motives. The reason this is important to me is because often I'm exposed to static characters in video games. You choose the decisions and reactions in many games but often are not given options to shape a characters personality - at least not really. With Whispers, your character is given different choices based on the path they followed.
The biggest reason I personally love Whispers is because of its themes. Not only does the game shock players fairly quickly, it then drops a proverbial bomb on them. Players are exposed to themes of creation, technology, religion, terrorism, and relationships. And the way all of these topics are woven into the story is actually quite brilliant. In fact, it is done well enough that I was horrified at the very idea of this game becoming a reality in the future. The fight between humanity and AI is wearing thin, in my opinion, and I was disturbed thinking about all of these themes. It's the idea that technology plays such a huge role in our society that it will eventually take over and we'd lose our humanity. The fact that in Whispers AI was made illegal due to them causing the fall of humanity, show a bleak outcome. As a result, I could only think back to how story concepts in movies like Blade Runner, Ex Machina (although the movie is awful, but that's a whole other discussion), and The Matrix might end up becoming our future. If that doesn't make much sense to you, the screenshot in this part of the review is the reason I was greatly disturbed on a whole other level. It is what challenged my perspectives on life and forced me to think about the path society appears to be taking. At that point, the nitty gritty detective work was the easy part of the game.
With all of that said, I look forward to more hard hitting titles like Whispers of a Machine, so be sure to click the social media links listed above!

Chapter One of The Executioner Releases July 17th
13 MAY 2019 - Lesser Evil Games today announce that the first chapter of their dark RPG The Executioner, which thrusts players into the shoes of a torturer, will be released via Steam on July 17th.
Fusing a unique blend of medieval storytelling, sanity management, and the brutal moral conundrums only an executioner could face - this harrowing tale of a man who tortures people for a living will challenge you to face the monster that lives inside of all of us. The decisions are yours, and so are the consequences.
As shown in the new teaser trailer, the predominantly text-based adventure promises a dark and unsettling atmosphere in a world filled with moral ambiguity.
The Executioner will be a multipart epic adventure into the cruel and unforgiving political sphere of medieval times. Starting with Chapter One, this brutal tale will follow the newly appointed Royal Executioner on a journey to retain his sanity in the darkest of times.
Lead Writer, Elena Sivakova said: "We were inspired to create this game by a thought: 'How people, whose work is inflicting pain and killing other humans, actually live?'"
"When Milgram published his research, proving that obedience to authority makes people do terrible things to others, and you don’t have to be an evil Nazi for that, people around the world were horrified: 'Am I also capable of this?'"
"We believe that our game provides an opportunity to live through a hard, painful and rather dark experience - and in the future to avoid the ethic trap in which the participants of Milgram experiment were caught – made ready, actually, to bring another person to death. We want our players to fully understand the price of a lesser evil."
The Executioner Chapter One will launch on Steam July 17th 2019.
About The Executioner
The Executioner puts you in the shoes of a man who tortures people for a living and has to fight to preserve his own waning sanity.
Fusing elements of traditional roleplaying with investigation, exploration and moral decision-making, it invites players to take on the role of an executioner who must seek a signed confession from those he is about to put to death - and there are many means of gaining one, not all of them pleasant.

Need a game that has both Anime-style characters thrown into a post-apocalyptic virtual world adventure and is a visual novel, requiring only the best B button pressing master to play...? Then this stunningly beautiful game might be for you.
Our World is Ended is a narrative visual storytelling game that was created by Red Entertainment studio and published by PQube Limited. Now available for purchase on both PC and home entertainment system like the Nintendo Switch, this game is not for the faint hearted as it does contain blood, violence, strong language and sexual innuendos up the wazoo.
We join a video game development team full of young, spirited, individuals called Judgement 7, working on an Augmented Reality game engine named W.O.R.L.D program. When wearing the AR headset the world around you changes the landscape in real time to look like the world it's programmed to be. When the protagonist, Reiji, performs a test run of the game out in the streets of Asukusa a strange glitch occurs and he is pulled into a damaged, ruined, world of his reality. With fictional monster trying to breach the wall of the real world it's up to J7 to help fight back this distortions from becoming reality.
As a visual novel game the controls are pretty basic. The most control you'll have over the story is when you're given multiple scenario options to choose from. Your choice will shape the ending for you. Sometimes these options will even fly across your screen, which for me was very irritating. I'm not a fast reader so when a sentence zooms by the screen I might get halfway through reading it before it disappears, missing the chance to pick something.
Another issue was the start of the game. It took a prologue of introduction and nearly 2 chapters before anything really started rolling. The pacing was slow and I almost lost interest in playing further, but I strive to move forward thinking that something crazy was gonna happen and eventually it did. Once the story started getting more exciting it keeps stringing you along with more twists and turns.
The game also likes to throw in the traditional 'Dating-Sim' style. Each lovely lady has their own distinctive personality. No two are the same. Strangely it doesn't focus strongly on charming the pants off your female colleagues, but with the right words and a strong smoldering look you might have a girl hooked to your arm during this world chaos.
One thing that did bother me a lot was how the controls follow the Japanese setting for the Switch. My A button is Cancel, where The B button is Enter. You can choose to change these settings in the menu, but for some strange reason only the menu will be stuck in its default setting, even after changing things. It gets confusing when I open up to save my game and I find it kicking me out of the menu almost every time.
On the bright side, and I mean bright, this game is beautiful and vibrant in color. Every scene and CG moment are painted in an almost watercolor masterpiece, giving it a soft look with nothing being to overbearing. Each character has their own color scheme that well represents their moods and tone.
Alongside the amazing visuals it also has a catchy soundtrack. To me it sounds more futuristic with a modern twist, I would even go as far as to compare it to the Danganronpa series and the Digimon Cybersleuth games. Always fun, I would find myself tapping my foot along to the beat during lighthearted moments and feeling a sense of danger during darker scenes, it really brings out each moment in the game.
Overall, Our World is Ended is a game that's not quite there, but does have a sudden change in momentum that keeps you at the edge of your chair. With the strange dialogue arcing across the screen, to very lengthy moments of pure storytelling where half the conversation is nothing but boob jokes, and default Japanese controls. It does redeem itself with beautiful water painted scenarios and up to beat music. This game is definitely more for players that are looking for a visually entertaining adventure where their only worry is to press B.
