Games I am most looking forward to in 2013

Good morning and Happy New Year! I will probably be on hiatus for a week or two as I have some time off this upcoming week and then when I get back to work? I will likely be very busy. So, I leave you with my parting post for 2012!

I have spent a lot of time lately talking about what happened in 2012 - well here I touch on some of the games that have me excited for what 2013 will bring to the table.

Tomb Raider - I have generally enjoyed the Tomb Raider games over the years.I admit I am a bit torn on one thing, and that is not the tone or any of the overall themes - I have had a love/hate relationship with quick time events in gaming (they really annoyed me in earlier God of War games and Heavenly Sword for example) and earlier trailers I saw of this game looked like those could be pretty prevalent. Otherwise? I think this looks excellent.

Dead Space 3 - This is sort of funny if you consider I have not yet played Dead Space 2, but I absolutely loved part 1 and do intend to knock out Dead Space 2 this year at some point. There are some definite changes though between the cooperative play and some of the brighter, outdoor locations. It will be interesting to see if these changes help keep the series fresh or take it in a new direction that fans may not care for.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Sure, the name is a mouthful, but I really enjoy all of these RPG's the PlayStation 3 plays home to. The graphics on this game just really appealed to me since I saw my first screenshots and while I have a huge backlog of unplayed PS3 games right now, I may have to make some room for this guy in 2013.

The Last of Us - The premise intrigues me. There are too few games that nail the 'survival' niche in gaming these days, and while this is not a 'horror' game, it does look to be a pretty tense experience from a developer who has a solid track record.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - I loved StarCraft and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. I do not even play online all of that much, but that is just it - there is a really good single player experience and tons of multiplayer madness to be had as well. All wrapped up with the usual Blizzard polish on it.

Luigi's Mansion 2 - Luigi's Mansion for the GameCube was not a perfect game by any means, but it is still one of my favorite titles from that console. This alone would have had me excited about this sequel, but adding more mansions and a coat of 3D paint to it all? Sign me up.

Fire Emblem for the 3DS - See above. Fire Emblem was one of my favorite Wii titles and the prospect of a portable, 3D version of this long running RPG/strategy franchise holds huge appeal for me.

What about you? What games are you most excited for in 2013?

  1. Happy New Year's Eve to you, Chalgyr! Hope you enjoy your time off :)

As for your list: I definitely agree with you when it comes to Luigi's Mansion 2 and Fire Emblem: Awakening. I'm also curious about Ni no Kuni. I'm really looking forward to English reviews for this game, as I still don't quite have a grasp on whether it's a good game or not. Sales of the Japanese version definitely seem to suggest something is up with it (and not something good), but what? Regardless, I'm intrigued by it.

Other games that I'm interested in that you didn't list here: Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Etrian Odyssey IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3DS and The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 for the Wii U.

  2. Thanks - and happy New Year's Eve to you too!

Shin Megami Tensei Iv is another 3DS game I'm curious about. The Wii U... well, I'm curious how some of the games will score, but without having one - tough to be tooooo invested in those titles yet. I too am curious about the sales for Ni no Kuni - especially since it's gotten plenty of positive press, but the numbers don't seem to reflect it so far overseas. Thanks for dropping by - and take care!

  3. I honestly can't think of many games I am looking forward to right now. I am very, very, very, very, very cheap and buy "new" games very rarely these days. I think Rayman Legends looks like it will be a lot of fun, and another solid platforming title, but I'm just not sure if I'm going to grab it day one.

With Bean 1 gaming a lot more now, trying to make game buying decisions based around what he might also be interested in is interesting....but a day one buy as of now is Mutant Mudds Deluxe on the Wii U when it releases. Bean 1 really has enjoyed me playing it on the PC, and tries to play it himself very often (even knows where to find it on the Start Menu). I'm hoping that the Wii U version using the Wii Remote as a control option, and that Bean 1 finds it a little easier to play with a controller than the mouse and keyboard he is currently using.

I'm with you on this one, can't really think of a lot of games I care for 2013

  5. With that shiny Wii U - I figured there'd be a few things at least, like Pikman 3 on the calendar, but I understand that not buying new and full priced perspective all too well. This was probably the year where I bought more new titles than ever and that's only 'cause f my promotion, lol

  6. I would say I can't nail down games I'm "most" looking forward to, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in games this year. I just know that money/time will be an issue, but if that wasn't, I would line them all up! I guess being "interested in" for me, could be "looking forward" to for many. Pikmin 3 seems interesting. The Wonderful 101, Lego City, Aliens, Rayman, The Last of Us looks interesting as well...it's trying to decide which ones to get. Maybe I should stick with a GameFly subscription!

  7. I preordered the Ni No Kuni limited edition a couple of days ago and can't wait to get it in 3 weeks... :) The demo made me crave for more - but I'm a little sad that it won't have a German dub, while I'm usually not too fond of those, Ghibli movies get really good ones over here and it would be nice if my son would understand what everyone's saying in the voiced scenes (it seems not all dialogue is voiced, at least it wasn't in the demo). But oh well, I'll just have to read all of the subtitles to him then.. 8) I'm also intrigued by The Last Of Us - tho I probably won't play it myself. I'd rather make someone play it while I just watch.. :> And Fire Emblem Awakening is the main reason why I got me my 3DS recently.. :) Can't wait!

  8. Sounds like we're anticipating a lot of the same titles. I've only played one Fire Emblem game, and that was for the Wii, but i absolutely loved it - super excited to see it on 3DS

    Thanks for dropping by!

  9. I never enjoyed any of the FE games before, since the perma-death bothered me too much, since this one got an option to turn it off (and I really like the art style) I'll probably enjoy this one a lot more! :)

  10. I'm excited for Starcraft 2: heart of the storm, can't wait!

  11. Hadn't heard that about this one - I will admit, I restarted from prior save points on more than one occasion due to this permadeath. I remember that being a pain in my bottom on the old Genesis rpg/strategy game Warsong too

  12. Agreed. I didn't make as much use of the online play with Wings of Liberty, but the single player was a blast and overall i really enjoyed it

  13. I really hate perma-death - I'd be fine with stuff like "You have 5 turns to revive the character or win the battle in order for your character to survive" or something like that. But one wrong move and your character is dead forever? ;____; Too mean. I've read a bit more about FE:A yesterday (mostly the marriage system and my unit stuff) and omg, I am now so uberhyped for this game... XD Bleh.. but we won't get the game until April over here... which is actually good. January is busy with Ni No Kuni & Virtues Last Reward and then there's Persona 4 Golden in February. So much gaming to do this year. oO

  14. Haha - I can definitely agree with that sentiment - about how 1 wrong move and you're hosed. I saw that several times in the Wii one - I found myself using a handul of save files so I could go back several turns if needed. The systems were great, but I hated losing characters and all it takes is one oversight where your character gets over-exposed to like... everything, and you're done for.

Yeah, I have a lot of games I need to get through this year. I think that's going to be how I hold myself off from buying a new system this year when the next gen comes out. Play through the stack I have now, and then I'll have a ton of trade fodder when the time does come in say, 2014. :P

  15. Plenty of games to anticipate this year, but just from your list:

Ni No Kuni - I have been waiting for another great Level 5 RPG after Rouge Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII and IX and this could be it!
The Last of Us - Not really the type of game I usually play, but after the fantastic Uncharted series I will try anything Naughty Dog releases.
Fire Emblem - Haven't played a Fire Emblem game since the GBA ones, but this one looks great and I'll play it if I ever pick up a 3DS.

  16. Thanks for dropping by to comment, Trigger!

Yeah, The Last of Us isn't normally one of my preferred game genres - I usually like rpgs, sports, strategy... but the Uncharted series gives them some pretty serious credibility and what I've seen of it looks good so far.

As for Fire Emblem? I keep seeing more and more about it - and I'm getting REALLY excited. :)

    Thanks again for commenting!
