Instead of a review today, you get to see me in the hospital

The fun thing about a blog gaming site - not every post is completely about games. I had a review all scheduled to go live this morning, but I decided to scrap it for a couple of days after I wound up with a surprise visit to the hospital two nights ago.

I think the important thing to take from the picture above is the kick-ass little Ninja Turtle my kids got me from the gift shop. Not the goofy-looking dude in the hospital gown.

Anyway, not entirely sure what happened. My sugar levels have been pretty regular, and not high enough or low enough to cause the fainting spell (only a few seconds) and shivering fit I went through (that was more like 45 minutes of uncontrollable weirdness). 3 doctors, a diabetic specialist, a cardiologist and a gaggle of nurses later, and basically I win this week's game of stump the medical professional.

I feel considering better right now, and plan to be back to work even in a day or two. I will keep posts coming up over here as well. I have had some reviews go up over at Digitally Downloaded, including some more next-gen stuff like the awful, awful Fighter Within. I get the desire to make use of the Kinect, but this is a bad attempt.

I also have a review for Hyper Dimension Victory coming this week - hopefully tomorrow or Friday, for the PS3. Rainbow Moon for the Vita should be shortly after. On the next-gen front, NBA 2K14 should be up over at DD, and Tiny Brains just came out this week and I hope to get that guy up over at DD soon as well.

I have already received a lot of well-wishing from several of you over on my FB page - thank you for that. Despite my mystery around what has happened, I feel like I am just about full tilt again and ready to roll. See you over the next few days on here, and as always thanks for dropping by.

Also? This little guy? Best Ninja Turtle. Go Mikey!

  1. Oh, sorry to hear this, Chalgyr. Hope you're fully back to normal soon and that this never happens again!

  2. Thanks bud. Of course, my wife might argue that I was never 'normal' - but I know what'cha mean. ;) Back home finally after nearly 2 full days in the hospital and I have plans to be back to work tomorrow and then we'll just have to wait and see. some medicinal and dietary tweaks forthcoming and fingers crossed that doesn't happen again.

Because I'm not going to lie - it sucked. :P

  3. OK, then, how about "as normal as possible"? ;)

Anyway, yes, my fingers and toes and everything else are crossed for you!

  4. Terribly sorry to hear about your hospital visit, but it sounds like you're in high spirits and will be out in no time. Also, your kids rock for getting you that Mikey Beenie Baby.

  5. Right?! That little guy was an awesome bunk-mate. :)

Thanks Reggie - all seems to be going well now at least. Take care!

  6. Oh man!!!!!!!! Just seeing this (we've had the plague revisit our house this last week, so been out of the loop more than normal, but nothing to take us to the hospital!).

Just wondering, do you know if they checked your medications for those type of side effects? One of the most common Type II diabetes medicine has shivering listed as a side effect from lactic acidosis...not sure if they mentioned lactic acidosis or tested for it?

Also, the Ninja Turtle looks like it might be the perfect size to use as a neck/head pillow in the back of our car! Have a third row we occasionally use, and I always forget to bring a pillow back there so I can rest my head against the plastic siding!

Glad you're well enough to be posting though, and feeling better!

  7. Erg, I'm sorry to hear that, but good to know you're back home and back to the real job of gaming. :)

Fingers crossed that we're keeping the kid plague away too Coffee.

  8. Thanks, Robert. Made for a long week and had a -slight- episode last night with the shaking thing again, so it's not completely licked apparently, but it ended after about 5-10 minutes and didn't get as bad. I think I'm ready to retire to a recliner of video game playing, that's what my body's telling me. :P

  9. Hey, thanks Coffee. Yeah, they looked at my meds - I'm on Metformin, which they said shouldn't cause that. The Lisinopril can cause lower blood pressure, so maybe? But as I mentioned in my reply to Robert above, another (far less serious) shivering fit hit me last night while I was out with my wife and son, and I've been off of that one since Monday now so... yeah. But it was over before she got me to the hospital, so we just opted to go home for now rather than be stuck in an out of town hospital that again wouldn't have any answers as I miss more time from work, you know?

And yeah - that little Ninja Turtle rocks. He's been going with me everywhere lately. Especially since my wife gets stuck driving me for a time, lol. Thanks for dropping by!

  10. Weird. Not sure if the doctors are looking at the side effects on Metformin, but you might want to refer them here:
    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR601533/DSECTION=side-effects

It does list "shakiness" under the less common side effects (which, means it has been associated with it, just at a lower reported rate), which might just mean those doctors had never seen it associated with it, and didn't know of any.

  11. that's actually pretty handy - thanks for the share. 'cause yeah, no one seemed to point at that medication as a concern, but there's enough going on there in that list to make me wonder. Thanks!

  12. No problem. My mom has said for a long time now, "There are A doctors, and there are F doctors". Like good and bad students.

It's a shame really, because schools will pass poorly performing students, just so their pass/fail rate is higher than it would be. It makes it look better for admissions/future students.

Also, if you have other side effect listed there, you might want to report them directly to the FDA...most doctors will not do that, as that requires a phone call/filling out a form:
