The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav – now available!

I commented on this game a few times in the past, and it is now apparently out:

“The Dark Eye - Chains of Satinav”, the new Adventure from Daedalic Entertainment and Deep Silver, is now available online for PC. Geron and the fairy Nuri take the player to a stirring adventure in order to save the lands of Aventuria from the threat of a downfall.
Players take on the role of young trapper Geron, who gets involved into an uncanny intrigue. The kingdom of Andergast, whose inhabitants are well known for their superstition, is in clinch with the neighbored Nostria, but first steps into the direction of an enduring peace are taken. But a mysterious plague of crows disturbs all upcoming hope. The birds are getting more and more aggressive and even attack people.

To get rid of this plague, the king seeks a skilled bird catcher - an opportunity for Geron to prove that the reputation for ill luck, that has followed him since childhood, is undeserved. Following an audience with the king, the prestigious task is assigned to him. However, not only does this quest prove to be unexpectedly difficult, but it also turns out to be the first step into the greatest adventure of his life, which will lead him to the uncharted lands of Aventuria and beyond. Be prepared for stunning hand-drawn backgrounds, elaborately animated characters in HD resolution, clever puzzles and a gripping story.

„The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav“ is now available online exclusively on PC.

  1. That game is so beautiful. And the characters are lovely, the story pulled me in right away and kept me all intrigued so far... but.. I feel a little cheated by the difference in price depending on your region. In the US, the price on Steam is at $26.99 (21,50€) while in the EU you have to pay 35,99€ ($45.20). I'm used to having to pay more for games (or anything, really) over here, but usually the prices are the same just with the different money sign in front or after it (like if a PS3 games costs $60 then it's 60€ over here) but this is, well, quite the stretch.

  2. Thanks for commenting!

I didn't realize there was such a sizable price discrepancy -- i can definitely see your concern on that. I haven't had a chance to play this yet - I'm hoping to because I agree - the first time I saw the artwork of this game, i thought it was beautiful myself. Sounds like you are enjoying the game itself so far though (as long as you factor out the price issue)?

  3. To be honest, I haven't bought the game yet - I will, it's definitely worth buying, but almost 40€ for a game I'll finish in a day or two (I'm a fast reader ;>) is too much for me. I'll probably ask a friend in the US to buy the game via Steam for me. :> I've got Deponia 2 pre- ordered tho, as the boxed version will only cost 25€, which seems reasonable to me. ;>

But I played a little more yesterday and yes, I totally enjoy the game. The art is really amazing (but that was to be expected, Daedalic's art director is an acquaintance of mine since over 13 years and her art has always made me drool.. ;>) and the English dub is really good this time around (I prefer it over the German dub tbh, the English VA's sound more mature, which suits the atmosphere of the game better). The game's also very polished, they've thought a lot about how to improve their games over the last couple of years... like, Geron will walk faster if you click at the place you want him to walk to a second time (I think a second click triggers the faster walking speed.. or maybe a double click, I'm actually not too sure.. XD) and you'll instantly load the new map if you double click an exit instead of watching him walk all the way each time (something that always annoys me in P&C adventures ;>).

They also took good care that people without any DSA (Das Schwarze Auge / The Dark Eye) knowledge wouldn't feel too overwhelmed by the setting - my DSA knowledge is rather brief, I've had a few friends who where into playing P&P games, so I heard a few things here and there, but I never actually played anything DSA or read any of the novels. But the game doesn't make me feel like I should have more knowledge of the DSA universe to get the story and setting... it feels just right to me. Of course there's lots of stuff that would make DSA fans thrilled as well. Perfect balance, imo.

  4. Excellent overview. I'm looking forward to trying this one myself and hopefully getting a review up soon. It does sound like they put some extra care into some of the smaller gameplay tweaks which is excellent news, and I will fall into that category in the last paragraph of yours. I have absolutely no DSA knowledge, I've just been enamored with this game's excellent artwork since I first saw a release announcement for it a few months back.
