And... back to reality

Back from being up north with my wife for the better part of a week. Tomorrow's our actual anniversary (15 years), but we celebrated by spending our time up in Mackinaw - in the city, on the island, at the Soo. Lots of pictures, lots of fun, lots more walking than I'm sure to, as well.

The weather was pretty much perfect. Almost every morning it was gray, overcast and threatening to rain, but by the end of the day it was almost always more sunny than not, and it kept the temperatures down so we could walk all about without getting overly tired.

It was pretty much electronics-free except for two things: our phones and my wife's camera. I took along my gaming devices, but never made use of them. When we were back at our room at night killing some time, it usually became Rummy - which my wife often won. In this particular hand, she took a picture because she was about to rack up 250 points on me. We were only playing to 300 and she had about 150 at that point. I kind of got killed that game.

Our last full day was spent on the Island, where ewe spent the afternoon trying out a bunch of different food and drinks. Good stuff, but now? I am still stuffed, like a day later. Since starting my current job, I've only really taken a couple of vacations of any length - this one and another trip up to Mackinaw a few years ago when we went up with the whole family. One of my coworkers just told me about how his wife joked the other day that when you go somewhere with your kids, it's a 'trip' - but when you leave them at home and it's just the grown-ups, THEN it's a 'vacation'. That sounds about right. :)

Anyway, I just figured I would share a few pictures and let you all know what exactly I've been up to before I return us to our regularly scheduled posting. Lots of games coming out now that I am really excited by, Such as Magic 2014, Project X Zone and Super Splatters.

  2. First, congrats on the 15 years!

WOWSERS! Literally had that conversation tonight (well, last night now :)) at a friend's house. They were talking vacation, and I said, "It's not really a vacation with the kids right now, unless you have a babysitter."

I think it's interesting Rummy was played, as my mom and Aunt/Grandmother are HUGE card players. They live close to each other, and play quite often, but it's not something Mrs. C and I have ever really picked up on.

We haven't ever been up your way, but our neighbors are both from Michigan and actually have family there still, and I'm curious if they've ever been to Mackinaw.

Anyway, congrats again on the 15 years, and glad y'all had fun!

  4. Thanks bud! 15 years... it's actually gone by pretty quickly. We were getting a lot of that vibe: wow, 15 already? huh.. .when did that happen?

Yeah, this year we were able to leave the two oldest at home while we were gone (17 and 14) and had the youngest (11) stay with our in-laws. Longest the two of us have 'been away' without the kids.. probably ever?

I didn't even know the rules to Rummy, but my wife's family is big on cards. Our first Thanksgiving together, we were playing... hell if I remember, some variant of Poker I think, down in her grandparents' basement. Now keep in mind, there were about 20 of us down there, occupying different tables. I was completely out of my element - I am not a card player at all.

2's were wild, and my wife was sitting on a pretty good hand and I was dealing. During the face-up part at the end of the deal, my wife looks at me and just deadpans: if you really love me, you'll deal me a 2 right now. Wouldn't you know it? I tossed her the 2 of hearts in front of her whole family. They were all reading into that one: It's meant to be! He must really love her! It gave everyone a really good laugh.

    Thanks again for stopping by!

  5. Haha, I often prefer grey weather myself. It just means you can wrap up a bit and feel warm and cosy :)

Congrats on the Fifteenth anniversary today! You know your marriage is successful when you're getting into recent Final Fantasy figures, so I guess fifteen must be REALLY good.

  6. ROFL - you can make another Final Fantasy reference based on us too. We started to date heavily right after VII released. I didn't get to play it nearly as much as I planned to back then.

    Thanks!

  7. Glad to see I'm not the only one who categorizes my important life events by how close they were to Final Fantasy releases :D
