June's PlayStation Plus

I haven't had a chance to finish watching Nintendo's E3 yet, but once I do I'll get a post out there (probably tomorrow) with my thoughts on it as well as on what has been (at least to me so far) a disappointing E3 overall.

But in the meantime, if you are a PlayStation 3 owner, and you don't have PlayStation Plus, now might be a very solid time to sign up for a month or three. Just hope you have plenty of hard drive space.  For those who haven't used PlayStation Plus yet, the premise is this: While you are a subscriber, you get access to demos (complete with the ability to earn trophies) and 'free' games.  The catch on the free games is that they only will play while you are an active subscriber.  For those who like to purchase content on the PlayStation Network however, being a PlayStation Plus subscriber sometimes gives you some nice discounts too, and unlike the freebies, games you actually purchase while a subscriber are yours to play indefinitely, even when your subscription runs out.

I figured I would go over the basics for those who haven't tries this yet, because here is the list of freebies for June.

  • Choplifter HD (PSN)
  • Hard Corps: Uprising (PSN)
  • Infamous 2 (Retail)
  • Just Cause 2 (Retail)
  • Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (PSN)
  • LittleBigPlanet 2 (Retail)
  • Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (Retail)
  • Saints Row 2 (Retail)
  • Sideway: New York (PSN)
  • Virtua Fighter 5 (Retail)
  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (Retail)
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone (PSN)

That is quite the haul.  You can see Retail and PlayStation Network games.  Some of these are better than others.  Hard Corps: Uprising I have on 360 and am playing a bit lately as it is, and it's a tough game.  Lara Croft has been out for awhile, but it's a really fun game as well.  Some of the retail games are a bit older, like LittleBigPlanet 2 and Saints Row 2.  But still - that is an impressive list of games.

Now, the thing to be aware of - these retail games chew up some serious real estate on your hard drive.  I had to remove some of my older archived titles to get these all to fit.  Infamous 2, Ratchet & Clack are both around 14 gbs each.  I think to install everything, I chewed up around 50 gbs of hard drive space, so keep that in mind if you're looking to buy.

Are you a PlayStation Plus subscriber?  If so, do you share my sentiment that you get some really good value out of the games it provides?  If you're not one, does this list of titles make you want to consider it, even if just for a three month plan?  (I figure if you drop whatever you're playing now and just played these games, you'd chew up probably three months, right?).

Just wait for the MEGATON announcement. So huge, you won't believe it!

"Are you a PlayStation Plus subscriber?"
Nope, but that list of games for FREE looks mighty good. Glad to see Sony doing some good stuff like this for Plus members. The HDD space is an issue, but luckily I think once you download it, you can delete it and just redownload it in the future right?

  2. Yep. I've got about 300 pieces of downloadable content though, and it's a pain to navigate through to find something to redownload. Sony needs to work on the interface there as more people's HDD starts to fill up.

  3. Lara Croft and Little Big Planet alone make this a freaking incredible freebie.

I question the business value in doing this, but eh. I see what Sony's pushing to do - make its really committed fans fanatical - and I guess this will make sure people remain PSPlus subscribers an extra year or so.

Plus, I'll take the free games.

  4.  Correct - I've run into the same thing.  I have a ton of content I can call back up down the road if I need to.  Even for the titles I have on disc like LittleBigPlanet 2 and Infamous 2, I went ahead and 'confirmed my purchase' of the games so I could download them someday down the road just in case I needed them (whether I sell my discs or one gets lost/damaged, etc)
