Gaming Thoughts... 9/24/11 - New Poll

Just a brief on here, but I put up a poll along the left side here about a week ago, and I thought I would call some notice to it. The idea of it is just to see what things you like most about this blog and hopefully indicating things you want to see more of.

I'll leave it so you can choose multiple items, but keep in mind that if everything gets checked, well, that doesn't really give me any idea where I should put the majority of my focus.

Areas include:

- Game reviews: pretty obvious, but do you come here mostly to see what I score things?

- Gaming thoughts: these are usually just random bits that aren't all scoring and metrics, like my musings about playing Warcraft or 'projects' like the Playstation Home

- Retro reflections: these take about the most work for me as I have to hook the system I'm playing up so I can record the playback and then edit it up, which is why I've sort of slacked off on these. But basically just me looking back at older games on the variety of older systems I still have about

- More Facebook/Twitter updates: I've been using these mostly to update things like what games I'm playing right now, quick impressions of games I haven't had a chance to fully review - things like that. And hey, if you're not fanning my FB page found here or my Twitter account here - now would be an awesome time to do so. :)

- Gaming news: I haven't done this in awhile either, but once a week I used to go around gathering up articles that piqued my interest from varied sites and often linked back to them - but not sure if this is something people are interested in or not

- Including images, art, videos: these do sometimes slow down the process for me - do you like seeing this stuff? Does it slow down the page loading too much? I know when I did the King's Bounty review there were a couple of people commenting on how the images and trailer looked - but that was one of the only times I've heard the images brought up, so just curious if the preference is to include them or not.

- Game deals: I go to a fair number of gaming sites and pages - almost every day. Most of the time, I don't see anything great, but once in awhile I'll see a bundle or gaming deal mentioned that might be of interest to others. Would this be something you'd like to see?

- Increase post frequency: I've kept a pretty steady every 3-days rate on posts for awhile - is that frequent enough? Do you stop by every day? Every other?

- Decrease post frequency: Opposite of the above - but do you only come by once a week? Do you find my current 3 days per post pace is too fast and you miss articles?

And of course any comments would be very welcome also. I will leave this poll running until the first of November. Thanks!

  1. One thing I would suggest, if I may, is a change of background.

I love reading your website, but white on black is painful on my eyes through a computer screen. In fact you're the only white on black website I spend any time on :)

  2. First feedback of any kind I've had on the site design so far, so thanks for that. :) I'll take a look at some of the other templates on here and see if anything else catches my eye. :)

  3. I actually hadn't seen the poll as I don't always visit the actual website all the time. I mainly use google reader to see what's new (rss feeds for articles and comments), many times read from there then jump directly to the post if I want to. (or sometimes I click on the link so blogger registers the traffic for your stats) With that said the dark colors are certainly harder on the eyes, but more entertaining than my boring layout. :)

Here are the two I voted for and while I could have chosen a few more, I tried to keep it low to keep things meaningful.

Gaming thoughts - I like the random thoughts that aren't so formal, structured with scores and metrics. Just a nice way to throw some ideas out there and start a discussion.

Retro Reflections - Big retro fan and I'm always up for revisiting the classics. Sorry if these kind of reviews are more work.

I think the post frequency is pretty good as I can't say much for my 2-per-month rate. :D

Even though I didn't vote for the reviews, I do like them. It's a way for a variety of games to pass by my attention without me having to really seek them out. (and they're not posted at an overwhelming rate like some of my feeds)

  4. @Robert - thanks for the feedback, the reasoning behind why you come here and read is good to know. At work we're doing a lot of internal evaluation on our procedures in our dept and I think that carried over to the blog - but it seemed like a good time to evaluate things.

The retros aren't too hard, if I don't do video. If I do video, they do take a bigger chunk of time so maybe I'll do some with and without since it looks like those are pretty popular based on the voting so far (and well, since I do have a ton of older games still at my disposal).

  5. Another thought on video is to link to those created by NesGuide.com or SNesGuide.com on youtube. I've spent way too much time on there and they usually have some great videos.

  6. @Robert - very cool, I hadn't seen those before. Yeah, I really like older games, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see how many people are voting up the retro reflections posts. I haven't done any for awhile, but it looks like I'll be dusting off some older systems and hookups. :)

  7. I voted on the first four...so far!

I kind of put the first two into one category, as I think the game reviews/thoughts can be under the same umbrella of sorts.

Retro Reflections - Well, I love hearing about older games that I may have(and probably) missed, so these are always interesting...and my delay fish self has not started my own version, more than a year later...so I know time can be an issue!

Facebook/Twitter updates - I try to use Twitter now, to comment when I beat a game...so that way there's a record down somewhere, because I don't do many reviews/previews on games very often. So, I think Twitter can be used for not only posting links to articles, but also just quick random thoughts, though I use it more for links now.

Facebook, well I'm getting better at using it...slowly but surely. As soon as I start using one, GOOGLE wants me to use another now. Can't they just slow down, and drink some coffee and enjoy life a little...without rushing me a new technology/software!?

  8. @Coffee - saw I had a new vote tonight, thanks for clarifying your preferences. It's pretty clear at this point, people want to see me dusting off old games. Considering I still have like... hundreds around here, I think I can do that.

I too have struggled to figure out where FB and Twitter come into the equation. I feel like I use Twitter for much smaller things, like commenting on Frozen Synapse from the Humble Bundle tonight. FB I don't post all of my blog posts through it, but a fair number (and I have FB set to Twitter up anything I put on FB in Chalgyr's Game Room). Sometimes i link articles from other sites on FB as well, though.
